Los Angeles Dodgers vs Arizona Diamondbacks
Ross Stripling RHP (1-0, 1.29 ERA) vs Robbie Ray LHP (0-1, 7.36 ERA)
Stripling was probably not in the Dodgers plans when they initially thought about their 2020 rotation, but he looked sharp in his season debut, allowing just one run in seven innings against the Giants. The 30-year-old pitched to a 3.63 ERA with a 1.15 WHIP while jumping between the rotation and bullpen in 2019. Stripling has always shown potential, maybe this will be the time he just takes that rotation spot and runs with it.
Robbie Ray continues to search for that stuff he had in 2017, when he went 15-5 with a 2.89 ERA, and his 2020 campaign has shown some troubling signs so far. The 28-year-old lefty, who was the subject of many trade rumors last year, gave up three runs on four hits in just 3.2 innings in his first start against the Padres. However, he did strikeout seven of 11 outs he recorded.
If the roof is open at Chase Field (it is almost never open in the summer in the desert), it will feel like, well, a summer baseball game in the desert. Temps will be as high as 116 degrees with about a 10 mph wind blowing in from left. Be sure to monitor the gametime conditions with our MLB weather info.

First Inning Total Pick
While Ray has struggled to find his groove the past couple of years, surprisingly, one team he has performed consistently well against is the Dodgers. In 20 career starts against the Dodgers he owns a 3.15 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP. While Stripling is going against a D-backs lineup that hasn’t found its footing yet in 2020, ranking near or at the bottom of the MLB in runs per game, average and OPS.
PREDICTION: Under 0.5 First Inning (+105)
We’re going to piggyback that first inning total play into the full game. As mentioned, the D-backs at the plate right now resemble a stormtrooper trying to hit Luke Skywalker with a blaster. And to make things tougher on them, Stripling pitched very well against Arizona in 2019. He made four starts and one relief appearance against the D-backs last season and posted a 2.50 ERA with 1.22 WHIP in those games. On top of that, the Dodgers bullpen has been excellent thus far.
With Ray’s success against the Dodgers and L.A.'s relatively slow start at the plate, a competitive outing from him here should keep this game Under.
PREDICTION: Under 9.5 (-119)
The Dodgers-Astros series was everything we could have wished for given the times, with the Dodgers pulling out a 4-2 extra innings win Wednesday. They showed why faves on the road have an advantage on the runline, as they put up two runs in the top of 13th to secure a 4-2 win. As noted, with the win, the Dodgers improved to 12-2 in their last 14 regular-season road games, covering the -1.5 10 times in that span.
With Ray has pitching well against L.A., and the Dodgers not performing overly well in the desert in 2019, going just 2-5 at Chase Field, you can make a case for the D-backs as decent home dogs. However, the Arizona lineup just can’t hold a candle to the Dodgers. And with the Dodgers staff dealing right now, it will be hard for them to keep pace.
PREDICTION: Dodgers -1.5 (+107)
