San Francisco Giants vs Los Angeles Dodgers betting preview

Starting pitchers

Johnny Cueto RHP (0-0, 4.97 ERA, 1.58 WHIP) vs Clayton Kershaw LHP (1-0, 0.00 ERA, 0.53 WHIP)

Cueto is making his fourth start of the season. The right-hander pitched fairly well in the season-opening game against this same Dodgers team, limiting the stacked lineup to one run on five hits over four innings. He then had a so-so outing against the San Diego Padres before responding with a solid start in Colorado. And for the most part, Cueto seems to get up for starts against the Dodgers.

What else can be said about Clayton Kershaw that hasn’t been said already? The guy is amazing. He started the season late due to an injury, versus a team he struggled against last year. It seemed like the time to fade Kershaw was upon us. Then the former MVP and three-time Cy Young Award winner went out and shut out the Diamondbacks for 5 2/3 innings on just three hits while striking out six. Yeah, he’s still good.

It’s another beautiful day for baseball in La La Land. Saturday’s forecast calls for clear skies, temperatures in the mid-70s, and minimal wind. Be sure to monitor the gametime conditions with our MLB weather info.

Betting Trend to Know

The Dodgers have had the Giants number recently, winning 12 of the last 18 matchups and covering the -1.5 runline in 10 of those occasions. Find more MLB betting trends for Giants vs. Dodgers.

Home Run Pick

While Cueto has been solid against the Dodgers in his career (more on that in a sec), when he does get burned, it's often via the long ball. Over the last four years in San Francisco, he has allowed about 1.5 home runs per nine innings. And his support isn’t much better in that category. Only the Mariners' relievers have surrendered more home runs than the Giants' pen. And guess what? At 1.80 per game, the Dodgers hit the second-most home runs in the Bigs.

While we missed on Justin Turner going deep yesterday, we’re going back to the well for a home run prop, this time with Cody Bellinger. The Dodgers star has begun to turn things around after a terribly slow start. Bellinger has hits in four of his last five games, including two dingers. We’re betting he goes deep once again.

PREDICTION: Cody Bellinger Over 0.5 Home Runs (+280)

Five Inning Total Pick

As mentioned, despite the ups and downs throughout Cueto’s career, he always seems to get his shimmy on when he goes up against the Dodgers. The right-hander owns a 3.49 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP in 21 career starts against Los Angeles.

But shockingly, Kershaw is better when he faces the Giants. The Claw has pitched in a whopping 49 games (47 starts) in his career against the Giants and has pitched to a 1.74 ERA and an 0.87 WHIP over that stretch. Those are ridiculous numbers for a sample size that large.

While, surprisingly, both teams have competent lineups so far this summer (no offense to the Giants, I just didn’t see that coming), this just has a feeling of a classic showdown and it should be low-scoring through the first five

PREDICTION: Under 4.5 First 5 Innings (-107)

Runline Pick

While this one has the look of a pitcher’s duel early on, the Giants just don’t have the staying power the Dodgers do.

Eventually, Cueto will have to come out of the game and hand the ball to a bullpen that, on top of giving up all those home runs, has an ERA over five and a WHIP of about 1.50. The depth of the Dodgers lineup will become too much as the game moves into the later innings.

The Dodgers bullpen, on the other hand, ranks second in the majors in ERA and fourth in WHIP. With the lineup depth and bullpen advantage, the Dodgers are a good bet to pull away late.

PREDICTION: Dodgers -1.5 (-150)
