NHL Bets for Monday, May 3

The NHL’s regular season is deep in the homestretch and there is still a great deal to play for, as many teams are either jockeying for position within their division or looking to backdoor their way into the postseason altogether. With 14 games scheduled to be played on Monday evening, there is no shortage of fascinating scenarios that may play out. Below are two wagers to consider from the Monday night slate of games in the National Hockey League.

DALLAS STARS at FLORIDA PANTHERS (Panthers -1.5, -131 ML, o/u 5.5)

Although the Dallas Stars are in desperation mode, the Florida Panthers enter Monday night’s game on a tear, winning nine of their last eleven games while sitting just two points out of the top spot in the Central Division. The Stars are expected to start Anton Khudobin in net tonight, and while Khudobin can shine at times, his recent stretch of play leaves quite a bit to be desired (given up ten goals in his last four games). Meanwhile, Florida appears to have an abundance of confidence in rookie goaltender Spencer Knight, as he is slated to make his third career start in tonight’s matchup. The Panthers have been formidable as a home favorite this season (15-5, +3.59 units according to Edge Finder), and their moneyline odds of -131 (56.7% implied probability) appear to represent an overlay.

Prediction: Panthers 3 – Stars 2

WASHINGTON CAPITALS at NEW YORK RANGERS (Capitals -1.5, -115 ML, o/u 6)

In what is genuinely a must-win for the New York Rangers, one would hope they are going to put forth an effort that reflects that in tonight’s game against Washington. The Capitals have a couple of key players listed as game-time decisions, including Alex Ovechkin, and while they are still in the hunt for the East Division crown, they have already locked up their postseason berth. It would be no surprise to see Ovechkin or defenseman John Carlson play this evening, but there seems to be just as likely a chance that both players are rested in preparation for the rigors of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. New York needs to win out and hope the Boston Bruins do not gain any points the remainder of the way – both of which seem highly unlikely. Nonetheless, the Rangers have played well against Washington all season (lead the season series 4-2 currently) and look to rebound after being blanked by the Islanders on back-to-back occasions last week. Given their current price as a home underdog, the Rangers get the nod.

Prediction: Rangers 4 – Capitals 3
