NHL picks for August 16

Dallas Stars vs Calgary Flames

The Flames look to take a 3-1 lead versus the higher-seeded Stars at 2 PM ET on Sunday. Dallas will likely go back to netminder Ben Bishop, who was in net for the Stars' only win in the series. The story of the prior three matches is Dallas’ inability to win despite outshooting Calgary 97-75. The Stars have the highest expected goals for per period in the first round, but have bottom-three numbers in scoring-chance shooting percentage and high-danger shooting percentage — they are getting chances, but not capitalizing.

Calgary is 5-2 SU since the restart, but has an unsustainable 20 percent shooting percentage on scoring chances (the best mark in the regular season was 17 percent) and is overachieving on the powerplay (29.2 percent in the playoffs compared to 20 percent in the regular season). Dallas won 5-4 in Bishop’s only start, and we wouldn’t mind another loose game in hopes that Dallas can bury the biscuit because if it can’t, they could be leaving the bubble very soon.

PREDICTION: Over 5 (-120)

St. Louis Blues vs Vancouver Canucks

The Canucks and Blues cap off Sunday’s schedule as Vancouver looks to send the defending champs down 3-0 and on the brink of elimination. The story of the series has been the inadequate goaltending of Jordan Binnington. The Blues’ netminder is sporting a rough 4.27 GAA with an .867 save percentage through four restart games, with the biggest culprit being he isn’t making big saves: he has a playoff-worst .763 SV% on scoring chances since entering the bubble,

While he lead to Blues to the Cup last season, we aren't ruling out a goalie change today as Jake Allen is capable of winning games as well.

Vancouver’s power play has been on fire since the play-in round and is now scoring on more than 32 percent on its attempts — the best rate in the league. The combination of Vancouver capitalizing on its scoring opportunities, against a team that can’t stop high-quality chances, has us leaning on the underdogs here in Game 3.

We also like the Over 5.5 for the same reasons we like the Over in NYI/WAS — If St. Louis trails late in this game, they may pull out all the stops because if they lose this game, the Blues’ season is likely done.

PREDICTION: Vancouver ML (+115) and Over 5.5 (+105)
