NHL Bets for Wednesday, April 7

Last night’s game between the Islanders and Capitals on Long Island carried a playoff intensity, with New York scoring late in the third period to account for the game’s only scoring, winning by a final score of 1-0. Unfortunately for me, both the Capitals moneyline (+105) and the Over of 5.5 (-115) did not hit, resulting in two losses on the evening. Here is a look at two plays to consider from Wednesday night’s NHL slate of games.

VEGAS GOLDEN KNIGHTS at ST. LOUIS BLUES (Golden Knights -1.5, -145 ML, O/U 5.5)

A six-goal explosion on Monday night got the Vegas Golden Knights back on the right track, defeating the faltering St. Louis Blues by a final of 6-1. With Monday night’s win, the Golden Knights continued their dominance of the Blues in 2021, improving their record in the season series against St. Louis to 4-1. According to Edge Finder, there is every reason to back the Golden Knights as winners on Wednesday night; as road favorites this season, Vegas is 9-3 (+2.42 units) overall. Conversely, St. Louis has struggled mightily this season following an outright loss, possessing a record of 7-14 (-9.12 units). When looking at the numbers more critically, the statistic is even worse, as the Blues have lost 10 of their past 11 in this scenario. While the Vegas moneyline odds available on PointsBet are no bargain at -145, it is far from representing an underlay (implied odds of 59.2%). There is no need to get cute in a situation like this – take the Golden Knights moneyline and move on.

Prediction: Golden Knights 3, Blues 2

At first blush, Wednesday night’s matchup between the Coyotes and Kings features two teams headed in decidedly different directions. Arizona has won seven of their last 10 games overall, while Los Angeles has lost three in a row and seven of their last 10. Couple these numbers with the Coyotes’ 5-2 win over L.A. on Monday night, and it may seem odd that the Kings are favored in Wednesday night’s tilt. However, when one considers that Arizona converted on 50% of their power-play opportunities earlier this week (3-for-6), it is fair to assume a regression to the mean is coming for a team that has cashed in only 19.4% of the time when on the man advantage. With the Kings sitting nine points behind the Coyotes for the final playoff spot in the NHL’s West Division, there should be an element of desperation brought to the table by Los Angeles on Wednesday.

Prediction: Kings 3 – Coyotes 2
