Golf Channel (NBC Sports Predictor App)
The Golf Channel has an exciting fantasy golf game for 2019.
The format is simple as you pick six head-to-head matchups. Then you pick a winner and winning score.
The winner/winners split this week's top prize of $1,500. Anyone that earns 60 points for the week is also given an entry to the FootJoy $100,000 Championship which is a multi-week elimination-style contest that will take place later in the season.
We will provide our picks for the format below and then provide some notes about why we chose our matchup picks or why we like a certain golfer to win.
Top Weekly Score: 85 pts
Sungjae Im (-18)
Snedeker is the defending champion but it's Simpson that brings seven finishes of T11 or better to the table at Sedgefield Country Club. That includes a win back in 2011 which was his first PGA TOUR title.
Reed is trending with the irons but Spieth claims to have made big strides last week with the driver. I'm not ready to give him the full stamp of approval but I will give him the slight edge over Reed.
Noren is right on the Top 125 bubble entering the week. Meanwhile, Casey is trying to pad his FedExCup points to get as high as possible in the Wyndham Rewards. The Swede is making his tourney debut while Casey has top 20s in his last two trips to Greensboro.
Cam Smith is trending back into form but his irons are still hit-or-miss. Give me Matsuyama who is 3-for-5 at this event with all three doubling as top 15s.
It's tempting to go with the Wake Forest product (Haas) but Horschel has gotten the better of Haas in each of the last 10 events they've played together.
Last we have Morikawa who is getting his first taste of bermudagrass this season. He arrives off a maiden win and I think his ball-striking can give him the slight edge over Wolff who may struggle a bit on a course that's going to restrict his driver usage.
As for my winner, I thought Webb was the obvious play but I went with a gut pick and chose Sungjae Im instead. The young Korean dominated the Korn Ferry Tour last year. Those courses are generally easier and give golfers a lot of wedge opportunities. That's exactly what he'll see this week at Sedgefield.
Top Weekly Score: 90 pts
Webb Simpson (-20)
Okay, trying not to overthink this.
The North Carolinian won his first PGA TOUR title here in 2011 with a score of -18 and named one his daughters Wyndham.
His most recent of five TOUR victories is the 2018 PLAYERS (30 starts ago), also with a score of -18, where he led/co-led after every round and was the 54-hole leader by seven.
The Wake Forest alum ranks No. 3 in all-time earnings at the Wyndham with nine made cuts in 10 tries, six top 10s and three podiums, including two straight (T2/2018; T3/2017).
He wrapped last season's co-runner-up with a day-low 62, his 10th lap of 64 or better on the par-70 layout, while his overall scoring average in 38 rounds is a tidy 67.00.
The 33-year-old arrives off solo 2nd at last week's WGC-FedEx St. Jude, where he closed with a day-tying-low 64 for his fifth top 10 of the season in 17 events, four of those top 5s, and second runner-up in his last four starts.
He ranks 15th this season in SG: Approach (.679), 20th in SG: Around (.318), T11 in Birdie to Bogey Ratio (1.71), and 12th in SG: Putting (.556).
