Blues back as best team in the NHL

The Capitals have dropped out of first place this week after going 1-2-0 and have been replaced by the St. Louis Blues. Washington actually slipped to third with Boston jumping ahead of them as well.

This week, I used hockey-reference.com to determine each team’s chances of making the playoffs. St. Louis is tops at 99.6 percent while Detroit has a zero percent chance of making the post-season.

1. St. Louis

Record: 29-10-7 (3-0-0)

(Last Week -2)

It was a perfect week for the Blues as they beat San Jose, Buffalo and the New York Rangers. St. Louis takes on Anaheim, Philadelphia and Colorado. They have the best chance of making the playoffs at 99.6 %.

2. Boston 

Record: 27-8-11 (3-0-0)

(Last Week -3)

The Bruins knocked off Nashville. Winnipeg and the New York Islanders. This week Boston plays Philadelphia, Columbus and the Pittsburgh Penguins twice. They have a 99.4 % chance of seeing post-season play.

3. Washington

Record: 30-11-5 (1-2-0)

(Last Week -1)

The Capitals beat Ottawa and then lost decisions to Philadelphia and New Jersey. The Capitals take on Carolina, New Jersey and the New York Islanders this week. They have a 99.1 % chance of making the playoffs.

4. Pittsburgh

Record: 28-12-5 (3-0-0)

(Last Week -5)

The Penguins defeated Vegas, Colorado and Arizona on the road. The Penguins play Montreal, Detroit and the Boston Bruins twice, this week. They are 97.2 % certain to make the playoffs.

5. New York Islanders

Record: 27-12-4 (2-0-1)

(Last Week -4)

New York defeated Colorado and the New Jersey Devils but lost in overtime to Boston. They play a season-high five games, taking on the New York Rangers twice, Detroit, Washington and Carolina. The Islanders have a 93.6 chance of making the playoffs.

6. Tampa Bay

Record: 27-14-4 (3-1-0)

(Last Week – 8)

The Lightning ran their winning streak to 10 games with wins over Vancouver, Arizona and Philadelphia, but lost Sunday to New Jersey. The Lightning play Los Angeles, Minnesota and Winnipeg this week. Tampa Bay has a 97.5 chance of making the playoffs this season.

7. Dallas

Record: 26-15-4 (2-1-0)

(Last Week -7)

The Stars won their first two games of the week, defeating Los Angeles and Anaheim, but dropped the third game of the California swing in losing to San Jose. They face Colorado, Buffalo and Minnesota. Dallas has a 91.8 % chance of seeing post-season action this week.

8. Colorado

Record: 25-15-5 (0-2-1)

(Last Week -6)

The Avalanche lost to the New York Islanders and the New York Rangers while dropping an overtime game to Pittsburgh this week. Colorado takes on Dallas, San Jose and St. Louis at home this week. They have a 97.6 5 chance of making the playoffs.

9. Carolina

Record:27-16-2 (3-0-0)

(Last Week -12)

The Hurricanes were perfect this week, knocking off Philadelphia. Arizona and Los Angeles. They take on Washington, Columbus, Anaheim and the New York Islanders this week. Carolina has an 81.7 % chance of playoff action.

10. Toronto

Record: 24-16-6 (0-2-1)

(Last Week -9) 

The Maple Leafs lost to Minnesota and Florida and in overtime to Winnipeg this past week. They play New Jersey, Calgary and Chicago this week. Toronto has a 67.4 % chance of playing in the playoffs.
