Power Rankings Week 10

by Michael Finewax

The Tampa Bay Lightning take over the top spot in the Rotoworld  rankings while Nashville drops from first to third as they could not take advantage of a favorable schedule which saw them play at home for all four games.

Anaheim won all four of their contests this week and Ottawa won all three to move up the standings while Chicago dropped to the bottom of the rankings as they were unable to pick up a point in four games.

1. Tampa Bay

Record: 20-7-1 (3-1-0)

Last Week 2

The Lightning had a good week, defeating Buffalo, Florida and New Jersey but losing to Anaheim. This week Tampa Bay travels to Detroit before returning home to face Boston, Colorado and the Rangers. The Lightning have been led by Nikita Kucherov and Brayden Point who are third and fifth in scoring. Kucherov is on a 10-game points streak and has 24 points in that time frame. Point is second in the NHL in goals with 20.

2. Toronto

Record: 19-8-0 (2-0-0)

Last Week 3

The Maple Leafs were perfect this week knocking off San Jose and Minnesota. They were almost perfect on the power play as they scored five times on six opportunities. They face Buffalo, Detroit and Boston. It was a big week in Toronto as they saw the return of Auston Matthews from a shoulder injury, as well as signing William Nylander to a six-year deal worth $41.7 million. That gives them even more firepower and they could be the highest scoring team in the league by the end of the season.

3. Nashville

 Record: 19-8-1 (2-2-0)

Last Week 1

The Predators should have put more room this week between themselves and the rest of the Western Conference as they played all four games at home. They lost to Colorado and Arizona before defeating Chicago and Buffalo. This week the Predators are on the road for a couple as they take on Vancouver and Calgary. The Preds recalled their top prospect Eeli Tolvanen on the weekend and he had a goal and an assist in his season debut.

4. Winnipeg

Record: 16-8-2 (3-1-0)

Last Week 5

The Jets started the week with a loss to Pittsburgh before beating the Blackhawks,  New Jersey and the Rangers. This week the Jets take on the New York Islanders, St. Louis and Philadelphia. The Jets lost Dustin Byfuglien to a concussion but that gives Jacob Trouba and Josh Morrissey chances to see more power play time.

5. Colorado

 Record: 16-6-5 (3-0-1)

Last Week 7

The Avalanche have jumped up the rankings and their 3-0-1 week didn’t hurt. They lost in overtime to St. Louis but defeated Nashville, Pittsburgh and Detroit. They are on the road this week as they face Pittsburgh, Florida and Tampa Bay.  Mikko Rantanen and Nathan MacKinnon are one-two in scoring with 45 and 43 points respectively. Tyson Barrie is out of action with a lower-body injury and could return in time to play against Pittsburgh. Samuel Girard has taken his spot on the power play for the four contests and had a goal and two assists in his first two games before going pointless in the last two.

6. Calgary

Record: 16-9-2 (2-0-1)

Last Week 11

The Flames lost in overtime to Dallas before beating Los Angeles and Chicago. This week they play four games as they sandwich road games against Columbus and Edmonton around home contests to Minnesota and Columbus. Mike Smith has regained his form and has won his last three games. The Flames have four players averaging over a point-a-game including Johnny Gaudreau, Sean Monahan, Matthew Tkachuk and Elias Lindholm. Mark Giordano is close behind with 24 points in 27 games.

7. Buffalo

Record: 17-8-3 (1-2-1)

Last Week 4

The Sabres finally had their winning streak snapped at 10 games as they beat San Jose but then faced Tampa Bay, Florida and Nashville and picked up only one point in an overtime loss to the Panthers.  They play only twice this week with both games at home, with Toronto and Philadelphia as their opponents. Sam Reinhart had four goals and six points this past week.

8. Washington

Record: 15-8-3 (1-1-0)

Last Week 8

The Capitals split the week as they beat New Jersey before losing to a suddenly tough Anaheim squad.  Washington is on the road this week with games in Vegas, Arizona and Columbus. The Capitals are currently being led by Nicklas Backstrom offensively as he has four goals and eight points in his last three games including his second career hat trick in the New Jersey game.

9. Boston

Record: 14-8-4 (1-1-0)

Last Week 9

Boston lost to Detroit for the second week in a row but defeated the Islanders earlier in the week. The Bruins play four times this week, on the road against Florida, Tampa Bay and Ottawa and at home to Toronto. Torey Krug has yet to score this season but has 12 assists in 15 games. He is on a five-game points streak. Ryan Donato was recalled from the minors and scored a power play goal Saturday for his second of the season.

10. Columbus

Record: 15-9-2 (1-1-0)

Last Week 10

Columbus beat Minnesota this week and lost on the road to the Islanders.  This week they play Calgary, Philadelphia and Washington. Josh Anderson is having a nice season in traditional fantasy leagues. He has 11 goals, 14 points, a plus-11 rating and 25 penalty minutes. Cam Atkinson is having a very strong season with 16 goals and 27 points in 25 games.
