NHL GPP Plays: Thursday

Updated On: December 3, 2018, 6:09 pm ET

Every Thursday I‘ll be providing my recommended player picks for your daily fantasy hockey lineups. The goal is to help you to the top of the leaderboards in FanDuel and DraftKings tournament play.

__________

We have a solid nine-game slate this evening that is highlighted by a Toronto Maple Leafs versus Pittsburgh Penguins game that should be fast-paced and high-scoring. The Tampa Bay Lightning, Winnipeg Jets and San Jose Sharks are also three teams that are in fantastic spots.

GOALTENDER

NOTE: Make sure to check the RotoGrinders Starting Goalies page prior to game time, to confirm that the goalies listed below are starting.

Jack Campbell, Los Angeles Kings – After three great games to start the season, Jack Campbell has stumbled a bit over his last two games by allowing four goals in each. However, tonight he gets a home game against the lowly New York Islanders, who will be coming in on the tail-end of a back to back after losing 4-1 to the Anaheim Ducks last night. He struggled in his only start in Dallas, but since coming to Los Angeles, his 11 games have been solid despite that small sample size.

Editor's Note: If you love Fantasy Football you have to be playing on DRAFT. It's daily fantasy football snake drafts instead of salary caps. All the fun of season long drafts but with no management and they last for just one week. They take minutes to complete and there's even auction drafts! No more setting lineups or constantly worrying about pros, just draft and win! Right now DRAFT is giving Rotoworld readers an exclusive FREE entry into a real money draft when you make your first deposit! Here's the link

FORWARDS

Nikita Kucherov, Tampa Bay Lightning – The Tampa Bay Lightning offense has started off quite slow and Kucherov is a part of that. He has just one goal and three points in his first four games and taken just eight shots on goal. That’s part of the reason why he’s coming in at just $6,800 on DraftKings. The ‘triplets’ were re-united, which put Kucherov alongside Ondrej Palat and Tyler Johnson; and although Kucherov and Palat only had one assist each, Johnson scored a hat trick. This bodes well for the trio as they host the Detroit Red Wings tonight as massive -300 favorites.

John Tavares, Toronto Maple Leafs – The offseason was all about John Tavares to the Toronto Maple Leafs and as dominant as he’s been so far, he — and frankly everybody else in the NHL — has been overshadowed by Auston Matthews' dominance. However, Tavares has been incredible with six goals, 11 points, and 28 shots on goal in just seven games. Linemate Mitch Marner has contributed just as well with third-wheel Zach Hyman, bringing up the rear with five points.

Artemi Panarin, Columbus Blue Jackets – Remember in the summer of 2017 when Artemi Panarin was traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets and many in the hockey world thought he was going to struggle away from Patrick Kane? Well, he put up 82 points — over a point per game — and had his best offensive season of his short career. Now in year two in Columbus, he’s off to a quick start with three goals and seven points in his first four games and UFA eligibility coming this summer. Tonight, the Blue Jackets host the Philadelphia Flyers – a team that’s allowed 4.17 goals against per game in the early part of the season, which is one of the worst marks in the NHL. Panarin is playing with Pierre-Luc Dubois and Cam Atkinson on the top line.

DEFENSE

Erik Karlsson, San Jose Sharks – He’s the most expensive defenseman on the slate at $6,500 and considering he has just three points in six games, that’s a bit discouraging. On the other hand, he has 18 shots on goal and 10 blocked shots, which shows he’s contributing in other facets of the game despite the points not being there. Well, playing on this team with a power play full of elite talent, he’ll eventually get going. Tonight the San Jose Sharks host the Buffalo Sabres, a team that’s expected to be near the bottom of the standings this season. The Sharks are -235 favorites tonight, so they’re expected to score some goals despite a somewhat low 5.5 over/under.
