July Second Baseman Rankings

Here are the July Rankings. Players are ranked for the remainder of the season based on how I believe they’ll perform in 5x5 leagues. Players are also listed at the positions where they’re most valuable, so if you don’t see that third baseman you’re looking for, he’s probably listed at second or short.

For all of the reasons Eno Sarris recently wrote about, I’m not really down on Kipnis, even if he has gone all month without hitting a homer. There just isn’t all that much reason to think it will last, and he’s still in as good of a position to rack up runs and RBI as any second baseman.

Pedroia’s woes are a little more discouraging, since not only is he not hitting for power, but his singles stroke hasn’t really been there, he’s been a non-factor on the basepaths and he’s not getting nearly as much production around him in the Boston lineup as anticipated. Still, he is Dustin Pedroia and I wouldn’t write him off.

I really should have waited until after Altuve’s .424-hitting, 16-steal month of June to recommend selling high on him.

Betts debuts at No. 15. Of course, the Red Sox won’t be looking for him to play any second base at all, but they also didn’t call him up to sit on the bench. Ideally, he’ll keep lining singles and doubles to the outfield and turn into a perfect No. 2 hitter in between Brock Holt and Pedroia, though he figures to start off lower in the lineup. He’s also a fine basestealer, but it’s harder to tell whether he’ll make much of an impact early on there. I think he’s worth a try in mixed leagues, but since he’s probably not going to do much in homers or RBI, his value will greatly depend on how many steals he attempts.

Gennett has had the month of his life in June, and since everyone else who would threaten for a spot in the 15-20 range is hurt (or has a manager with a ridiculous amount of faith in David Freese), he moves up to No. 19. I’m not really buying the power, but Gennett has eliminated any possibility of Weeks reclaiming the job.

As for Green, I’d like to rate him higher. I think he should be starting at third base over Freese in Anaheim, but he had seven at-bats in his first 10 days back in the majors.
