- The situations in Milwaukee and Washington make for some of the toughest calls here. Jesus Aguilar has a .953 OPS this year and seems rather legit, but then Eric Thames had a .976 OPS before going down and could be back in 2-3 weeks. It probably makes sense for the Brewers to go back to a lefty-righty platoon there when Thames is healthy, though Aguilar looks like he’s not going down without a fight.
- I assume the Nationals will give Ryan Zimmerman a chance to reclaim his job at first base, but that’s another situation in which a platoon is probably called for, with Matt Adams starting against the righties. If neither had to worry about the other, I’d be content with both as top-20 first basemen. As is, that’s a tough sell. The Nationals can play Adams in left field if they’re forced to do so, but Juan Soto shows no signs of allowing that to happen and even if Soto falters, there’s just so much defense to be gained from playing Adam Eaton in left and Michael Taylor in center.
- Joe Mauer’s latest concussion has his future in doubt. The Twins’ response thus far has just been to use Robbie Grossman at DH. They could and probably should try Chris Carter, who has hit .251/.333/.585 with 15 homers in Triple-A this year. He only recently joined the organization after opening the season at hitter friendly Salt Lake (the Angels’ PCL affiliate), so his Triple-A numbers aren’t quite as encouraging as they sound. Still, he has upside beyond what Grossman offers. The Twins are counting down the days until Jorge Polanco is ready to return, which would allow them to alternate Miguel Sano and Eduardo Escobar between third base and DH.
