Dropping off: Ryan Flaherty (40th)
- I still believe in Wong’s bat, but the playing-time situation in St. Louis has his ranking plunging. He hasn’t been an everyday player anyway, and now it figures that Aledmys Diaz will see a lot of time at second following Jhonny Peralta’s return from the DL.
- The Rays have taken to playing Pearce at second to take advantage of his hot bat. He’s striking out less than ever, walking more then ever and showing as much power as ever, even though he’s gone from a good homer park in Baltimore to one of the toughest in baseball for right-handers in Tampa Bay. I doubt he’ll remain solid enough against righties to justify regular playing time, but now that he’s second-base eligible again, he doesn’t need to be especially productive to be of use in mixed leagues.
- Fernandez has been eligible to sign for three weeks now, and he held a showcase in the Dominican Republic last week. He’ll need some time in the minors after inking a deal, but once he shakes off some rust, he should be a legitimate leadoff-hitting second baseman for some club. Since he’s not really a home run hitter or a basestealer, his fantasy upside will be rather limited.
