Targets and Touches

Week 5 NFC Targets/Touches

by Justin Bailey
Updated On: October 4, 2018, 4:04 pm ET

Targets and Touches will only have players’ six most recent games, regardless if they were active or on a bye. The data will be in descending order of games played. NFC will debut on Tuesday, and the AFC will be posted on Wednesday.

All targets and touches data is compiled from Pro Football Reference. Cornerback data is sourced via Pro Football Focus. Click here to see the Week 5 AFC targets.

Note: I decided to include more players into the Targets and Touches format for the rest of the season. For simplicity, cornerbacks who see at least 50 percent of the prior week’s snaps will be included.

Arizona Cardinals

Targets: Larry Fitzgerald (10, 11, 12, 7, 8), John Brown (4, 3, 11, 16, 4), Michael Floyd (7, 6, 11, 7, 3), David Johnson (6, 5, 6, 4, 6), Jaron Brown (2, 2, 6, 5, 3), Darren Fells (0, 5, 2, 2, 0), Jermaine Gresham (4, 1, 1, 1, 1), Andre Ellington (2, 1, 0, 1, 0), J.J. Nelson (2, 0, 0, 1, 1), Troy Niklas (0, 1, 1, 0, 0), Chris Johnson (0, 0, 0, 1, 0), Hakeem Valles (0, 0, 0, 0, 1)

Carries: David Johnson (16, 12, 19, 17, 27), Chris Johnson (1, 16, 2, 6, 0), Andre Ellington (0, 1, 0, 1, 6), Carson Palmer (2, 0, 0, 0, 0), Drew Stanton (0, 0, 0, 0, 2), Stepfan Taylor (0, 0, 0, 0, 2), Larry Fitzgerald (0, 0, 0, 1, 0)

RZ Targets: Larry Fitzgerald (3, 3, 1, 0, 0), Michael Floyd (3, 2, 1, 1, 0), David Johnson (1, 1, 1, 2, 1), Jermaine Gresham (1, 1, 0, 0, 0), John Brown (0, 0, 0, 2, 0), Darren Fells (0, 1, 0, 0, 0)

RZ Carries: David Johnson (4, 2, 6, 1, 9), Chris Johnson (1, 6, 0, 1, 0)

CBs Thrown At (via PFF): Patrick Peterson 3, 8, 4, 7, 1 (2-13, 3-38-1, 2-24, 3-48, 0-0), Marcus Cooper 12, 9, 5, 8 (8-94, 5-41, 4-106-2, 3-30), Tyrann Mathieu 7 (4-47-1)

Observations: It’s difficult to take anything away from this game with Drew Stanton behind center. He threw for mere 124 yards on 28 pass attempts. As expected, David Johnson’s workload was heavily increased, with 33 total touches, and he topped his previous season-high in carries by eight. DJ draws the tough Jets run defense in Week 6. Carson Palmer is expected back this week.

Atlanta Falcons

Targets: Julio Jones (8, 5, 7, 15, 6), Mohamed Sanu (8, 5, 4, 3, 6), Jacob Tamme (8, 8, 4, 2, 1), Tevin Coleman (6, 2, 3, 4, 6), Devonta Freeman (4, 0, 5, 3, 5), Aldrick Robinson (0, 3, 2, 3, 1), Taylor Gabriel (0, 3, 3, 3, 0), Justin Hardy (2, 3, 2, 0, 0), Austin Hooper (1, 3, 0, 1, 1), Levine Toilolo (0, 2, 0, 1, 1), Patrick DiMarco (1, 0, 0, 2, 1)

Carries: Devonta Freeman (11, 17, 14, 13, 23), Tevin Coleman (8, 12, 12, 8, 6), Matt Ryan (3, 0, 5, 4, 3)

RZ Targets: Jacob Tamme (1, 2, 2, 2, 1), Devonta Freeman (2, 0, 1, 1, 2), Mohamed Sanu (2, 2, 1, 0, 1), Tevin Coleman (1, 1, 0, 1, 2), Julio Jones (0, 0, 3, 0, 0), Justin Hardy (1, 1, 1, 0, 0), Aldrick Robinson (0, 0, 1, 0, 0)

RZ Carries: Devonta Freeman (4, 3, 3, 3, 5), Tevin Coleman (1, 4, 6, 1, 0), Matt Ryan (0, 0, 3, 0, 0)

CBs Thrown At: Robert Alford 7, 4, 8, 6, 4 (4-91-1, 3-24-1, 6-61, 3-51, 2-15), Desmond Trufant 6, 7, 7, 7, 5 (3-22, 4-73-1, 2-37, 3-39-1, 4-40), Brian Poole 3, 3, 9, 8, 1 (1-26, 2-12, 7-45-1, 5-62-1, 1-7)

Observations: Matt Ryan threw a season-low 28 times against the Denver, and there wasn’t much target share to go around. The targets were evenly distributed between Julio Jones, Devonta Freeman, Tevin Coleman and Mohamed Sanu. Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman both had respectable fantasy days, but Freeman continues to see the most touches in this offense. Freeman is out-carrying Coleman 50-to-26 the last two weeks, but Coleman is making the most of his touches. In standard leagues, Coleman is RB7, with Freeman right behind him at RB8. Coleman ranks first in the league in points per snap, with Freeman right behind in third.

Carolina Panthers

Targets: Greg Olsen (9, 8, 10, 13, 13), Kelvin Benjamin (12, 9, 1, 7, 9), Corey Brown (2, 6, 5, 7, 4), Fozzy Whittaker (1, 4, 6, 9, 1), Ted Ginn (1, 4, 7, 5, 1), Devin Funchess (4, 4, 2, 3, 0), Mike Tolbert (1, 1, 3, 1, 0), Ed Dickson (0, 1, 1, 2, 0), Jonathan Stewart (1, 2, 0, 0, 0), Cameron Artis-Payne (0, 0, 1, 0, 0)

Carries: Cameron Artis-Payne (0, 0, 12, 6, 18), Fozzy Whittaker (3, 16, 5, 3, 5), Cam Newton (11, 6, 7, 5, 0), Jonathan Stewart (15, 5, 0, 0, 0), Mike Tolbert (2, 9, 2, 1, 1), Ted Ginn (1, 1, 2, 0, 0), Derek Anderson (0, 0, 0, 0, 1)

RZ Targets: Greg Olsen (2, 0, 0, 3, 2), Kelvin Benjamin (1, 2, 0, 1, 1), Corey Brown (0, 1, 0, 2, 0), Devin Funchess (1, 1, 0, 0, 0), Mike Tolbert (0, 0, 0, 1, 0)

RZ Carries: Mike Tolbert (0, 4, 0, 0, 1), Fozzy Whittaker (0, 2, 1, 0, 1), Cam Newton (1, 1, 1, 0, 0), Cameron Artis-Payne (0, 0, 0, 0, 3), Jonathan Stewart (2, 0, 0, 0, 0)

CBs Thrown At: Daryl Worley 5, 6 (3-73, 3-50), Robert McClain 5 (4-51)

Observations: Greg Olsen was responsible for 65 percent of Derek Anderson’s passing yards and 50 percent of his completed passes. Cameron Artis-Payne made the most of his 18 totes after going 18-85-2 against a Tampa team that was 11th in rush DVOA. CAP draws the Saints in Week 6, provided Jonathan Stewart misses another week.

Chicago Bears

Targets: Kevin White (7, 6, 14, 9, 0), Alshon Jeffery (6, 7, 7, 5, 6), Eddie Royal (6, 6, 3, 7, 9), Zach Miller (4, 5, 9, 3, 8), Cameron Meredith (0, 0, 3, 5, 12), Jordan Howard (0, 2, 6, 4, 3), Jeremy Langford (4, 2, 3, 0, 0), Logan Paulsen (1, 0, 0, 3, 1), Ka'Deem Carey (0, 1, 0, 0, 1), Josh Bellamy (0, 0, 0, 0, 1)

Carries: Jordan Howard (0, 3, 8, 23, 16), Jeremy Langford (17, 11, 3, 0, 0), Brian Hoyer (0, 0, 4, 3, 1), Ka'Deem Carey (1, 2, 0, 0, 1), Joique Bell (0, 0, 0, 3, 0), Jay Cutler (2, 0, 0, 0, 0), Cameron Meredith (0, 0, 0, 0, 1), Kevin White (0, 1, 0, 0, 0), Paul Lasike (0, 1, 0, 0, 0)

RZ Targets: Eddie Royal (1, 1, 1, 1, 2), Zach Miller (0, 0, 4, 1, 1), Kevin White (0, 2, 2, 1, 0), Cameron Meredith (0, 0, 0, 1, 3), Alshon Jeffery (0, 2, 1, 0, 0), Jordan Howard (0, 0, 1, 1, 0), Ka'Deem Carey (0, 1, 0, 0, 0)

RZ Carries: Jordan Howard (0, 0, 2, 3, 3), Jeremy Langford (2, 2, 0, 0, 0), Brian Hoyer (0, 0, 1, 0, 0), Cameron Meredith (0, 0, 0, 0, 1), Ka'Deem Carey (0, 0, 0, 0, 1)

CBs Thrown At: Cre’von LeBlanc 0, 1, 5 (0-0, 1-10, 3-73), Bryce Callahan 9, 8 (4-15, 6-54), Tracy Porter 5 (4-50)

Observations: Brian Hoyer is coming his third straight week of 300+ passing yards and two touchdowns and zero interceptions. Alshon Jeffery saw fewer targets than Cameron Meredith, Eddie Royal and Zach Miller against the Colts. Meredith was targeted a team-high 12 times and ended up with 9-130-1 while playing a team-high 95 percent of the snaps for the Bears. He should be high on your waiver wire priority.

Dallas Cowboys

Targets: Jason Witten (14, 4, 2, 9, 5), Cole Beasley (12, 6, 7, 4, 4), Dez Bryant (5, 12, 6, 0, 0), Terrance Williams (4, 0, 4, 6, 5), Brice Butler (2, 1, 1, 9, 3), Ezekiel Elliott (2, 2, 2, 1, 4), Lance Dunbar (2, 2, 0, 2, 0), Geoff Swaim (1, 2, 1, 0, 1), Alfred Morris (1, 0, 1, 0, 1), Rod Smith (0, 0, 0, 0, 1)

Carries: Ezekiel Elliott (20, 21, 30, 23, 14), Alfred Morris (7, 5, 5, 7, 6), Dak Prescott (2, 1, 4, 5, 8), Lance Dunbar (0, 3, 1, 1, 0), Lucky Whitehead (0, 0, 1, 1, 1), Cole Beasley (0, 0, 0, 1, 0)

RZ Targets: Jason Witten (3, 2, 1, 2, 1), Brice Butler (0, 1, 0, 2, 1), Cole Beasley (2, 0, 0, 0, 1), Dez Bryant (0, 2, 1, 0, 0), Ezekiel Elliott (1, 1, 0, 0, 0), Lance Dunbar (0, 0, 0, 1, 0), Terrance Williams (0, 0, 0, 1, 0)

RZ Carries: Ezekiel Elliott (4, 2, 1, 5, 1), Dak Prescott (0, 1, 1, 0, 2), Alfred Morris (0, 1, 1, 0, 1), Lance Dunbar (0, 1, 1, 1, 0)

CBs Thrown At: CBs Thrown At: Brandon Carr 6, 9, 7, 5, 4 (3-31-1, 6-109, 7-81, 4-56-1, 1-9),  Morris Claiborne 3, 9, 14, 3, 7 (1-6, 4-27, 8-90, 4-40), Anthony Brown 5, 6, 6 (5-58, 3-44, 5-37-1)

Observations: With only 24 pass attempts, there wasn’t much target share to go around in this game. With the exception of Terrance Williams (5-70), no other pass-catcher topped 55 receiving yards in this game for Dallas. Ezekiel Elliott continues to crush his rookie year with 130+ rushing yards in three straight games. Elliott draws Green Bay on the road in Week 6. The Packers have been one of the top run-stuffing units in 2016.

CBs Thrown At: Darius Slay 10, 6, 5, 5, 6 (5-80, 3-30, 3-31-1, 2-12, 4-30), Nevin Lawson 4, 4, 2, 5, 5 (4-59-1, 2-62-1, 1-9, 4-25-1, 2-25), Quandre Diggs 5 (5-65-1)

Observations: Theo Riddick led the Lions in targets, carries, and red zone targets. He caught all six of his targets, salvaging his fantasy day with two touchdowns through the air. Riddick remains valuable in PPR leagues. Without Dwayne Washington, Zach Zenner received three of the four red zone carries.

Green Bay Packers

Targets: Jordy Nelson (9, 11, 7, 0, 13), Randall Cobb (8, 7, 3, 0, 11), Davante Adams (7, 7, 2, 0, 8), Richard Rodgers (3, 2, 3, 0, 5), Jared Cook (2, 6, 3, 0, 0), James Starks (1, 1, 2, 0, 6), Eddie Lacy (2, 1, 2, 0, 1), Trevor Davis (0, 1, 1, 0, 0), Jared Abbrederis (1, 0, 0, 0, 0), Justin Perillo (0, 0, 1, 0, 0)

RZ Carries: Eddie Lacy (5, 2, 2, 0, 1), James Starks (1, 2, 0, 0, 1), Aaron Rodgers (1, 1, 0, 0, 1), Randall Cobb (1, 0, 0, 0, 0)

CBs Thrown At:  Quinten Rollins 6, 1, 5, 6 (4-98-1, 0-0, 4-39-1, 3-42), Ladarius Gunter 4, 5, 2 (4-48, 2-0, 0-0)

Observations: In a game where Jordy Nelson receives 13 targets you’d think his stat line would be more impressive than 4-38-1, but Aaron Rodgers completed a mere 51 percent of his passes and tossing as many interceptions (2) as he did touchdowns. Eddie Lacy left this game early with an ankle injury.

Los Angeles Rams

Targets: Tavon Austin (12, 9, 8, 6, 10), Kenny Britt (6, 10, 6, 4, 6), Lance Kendricks (3, 6, 4, 7, 3), Brian Quick (5, 1, 2, 6, 4), Todd Gurley (3, 1, 2, 5, 5), Tyler Higbee (4, 0, 0, 1, 1), Benny Cunningham (1, 2, 1, 0, 0), Bradley Marquez (0, 0, 2, 0, 0), Malcolm Brown (1, 0, 0, 0, 1), Michael Thomas (0, 0, 1, 0, 0), Pharoh Cooper (0, 0, 0, 0, 1)

RZ Carries: Todd Gurley (0, 1, 7, 3, 6), Tavon Austin (0, 0, 0, 0, 2), Case Keenum (0, 0, 1, 0, 0)

CBs Thrown At: Lamarcus Joyner 9, 6, 12, 3, 1 (7-57, 3-18, 9-76, 2-25, 1-12), Trumaine Johnson 5, 4, 14, 11, 3 (3-20, 3-18, 10-119-1, 5-66, 1-9), E.J. Gaines 7, 7 (6-55, 3-35-1)

Observations: Todd Gurley continues to see steady workloads, but continues to be inefficient with his touches. He has yet to average better than 3.15 YPC. He has been utilized more in the passing game recently with 10 targets the last two weeks.

Minnesota Vikings

Targets: Kyle Rudolph (8, 8, 10, 7, 4), Stefon Diggs (9, 11, 7, 7, 0), Adam Thielen (5, 5, 4, 3, 8), Charles Johnson (6, 2, 2, 4, 1), Cordarrelle Patterson (1, 0, 1, 6, 6), Jerick McKinnon (2, 1, 2, 5, 3), Matt Asiata (0, 1, 1, 2, 3), Adrian Peterson (2, 3, 0, 0, 0), Jarius Wright (0, 0, 0, 0, 4), Rhett Ellison (0, 0, 1, 1, 0), MyCole Pruitt (0, 0, 0, 1, 0), Zach Line (0, 0, 0, 0, 1)

RZ Carries: Jerick McKinnon (0, 0, 2, 3, 4), Matt Asiata (2, 0, 1, 1, 1), Adrian Peterson (3, 0, 0, 0, 0), Sam Bradford (0, 0, 0, 0, 1), Stefon Diggs (1, 0, 0, 0, 0)

CBs Thrown At: Terence Newman 9, 5, 3, 7, 6 (5-46, 2-12, 1-9, 4-36, 0-0), Captain Munnerlyn 1, 7, 7, 8, 7 (1-5, 4-36, 6-87, 6-36, 5-45), Xavier Rhodes 3, 7, 6 (0-0, 3-23, 5-56-1)

Observations: Jerick McKinnon was primed for a heavy workload, which he received. Unfortunately, after rushing for 7-32 early on, he did next to nothing. McKinnon failed to punch one into the end zone, and Matt Asiata finished the job. Somehow McKinnon finished the game with 36 rushing yards on 20 carries.

New Orleans Saints - Bye Week 5

Targets: Brandin Cooks (9, 9, 8, 6, 0), Michael Thomas (6, 5, 11, 9, 0), Coby Fleener (4, 8, 11, 5, 0), Mark Ingram (2, 4, 6, 7, 0), Willie Snead (9, 8, 0, 1, 0), Travaris Cadet (7, 3, 6, 0, 0), Brandon Coleman (0, 4, 8, 3, 0), Tommylee Lewis (0, 1, 4, 1, 0), John Kuhn (1, 2, 0, 2, 0), Daniel Lasco (0, 0, 0, 2, 0), Tim Hightower (1, 0, 0, 0, 0)

Observations: Bye Week

New York Giants

Targets: Odell Beckham (8, 11, 11, 9, 12), Sterling Shepard (4, 8, 7, 7, 7), Victor Cruz (4, 8, 3, 9, 2), Will Tye (3, 3, 5, 6, 3), Bobby Rainey (0, 0, 2, 9, 6), Shane Vereen (5, 3, 5, 0, 0), Larry Donnell (2, 5, 4, 0, 0), Paul Perkins (0, 0, 0, 3, 2), Orleans Darkwa (0, 1, 1, 2, 0), Rashad Jennings (2, 2, 0, 0, 0), Jerell Adams (0, 0, 0, 0, 2), Tavarres King (0, 0, 0, 0, 1)

Carries: Rashad Jennings (18, 13, 0, 0, 0), Shane Vereen (6, 14, 11, 0, 0), Orleans Darkwa (0, 1, 10, 12, 7), Bobby Rainey (0, 0, 0, 4, 5), Eli Manning (0, 4, 0, 0, 1), Paul Perkins (0, 0, 0, 2, 2)

RZ Carries: Shane Vereen (2, 4, 1, 0, 0), Orleans Darkwa (0, 0, 3, 2, 0), Eli Manning (0, 3, 0, 0, 1), Paul Perkins (0, 0, 0, 0, 2)

CBs Thrown At: Janoris Jenkins 4, 12, 6, 5, 7 (1-15, 8-51, 5-48, 2-10, 5-60), Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie 3 (1-8), Leon Hall 6 (4-47)

Observations: Odell Beckham’s target share has been steady for much of the season, but the touchdowns haven’t been there. He finally found pay-dirt late in the 4th quarter and finished with 5-56-1. The Giants offense was abysmal for much of this game.

Philadelphia Eagles

Targets: Jordan Matthews (14, 9, 3, 0, 4), Nelson Agholor (5, 7, 3, 0, 7), Darren Sproles (5, 2, 6, 0, 4), Trey Burton (0, 7, 6, 0, 2), Dorial Green-Beckham (2, 4, 4, 0, 4), Josh Huff (3, 1, 5, 0, 3), Zach Ertz (7, 0, 0, 0, 3), Brent Celek (1, 1, 4, 0, 0), Ryan Mathews (0, 1, 0, 0, 5), Wendell Smallwood (0, 1, 0, 0, 0)

RZ Carries: Ryan Mathews (8, 3, 0, 0, 2), Darren Sproles (0, 4, 0, 0, 1), Wendell Smallwood (0, 0, 4, 0, 0), Kenjon Barner (0, 2, 1, 0, 0), Carson Wentz (0, 2, 0, 0, 0)

CBs Thrown At: Nolan Carroll 6, 2, 8, 2 (3-114, 2-33, 3-33, 2-26), Ron Brooks 3, 6, 3, 3 (0-0, 5-49, 2-26, 2-21-1),

Observations: Before this week, the Lions had allowed six touchdowns to tight ends. It looked like a great spot for Zach Ertz in his first game back since Week 1. He played 85 percent of the team’s snaps and ran 28 pass routes, but the volume was missing with three targets. Ertz is still in the low-end TE1 range.

San Francisco 49ers

Targets: Jeremy Kerley (11, 6, 6, 9, 13), Torrey Smith (6, 10, 4, 2, 1), Garrett Celek (4, 2, 4, 5, 6), Quinton Patton (5, 6, 4, 3, 2), Carlos Hyde (3, 3, 1, 1, 6), Vance McDonald (3, 2, 2, 0, 0), Shaun Draughn (2, 1, 2, 1, 0), Blake Bell (0, 2, 1, 0, 2), Rod Streater (0, 2, 1, 0, 1), Aaron Burbridge (0, 1, 0, 2, 0), Mike Davis (0, 1, 0, 0, 0)

RZ Carries: Carlos Hyde (5, 4, 8, 3, 4), Blaine Gabbert (1, 1, 1, 2, 1), Shaun Draughn (2, 1, 0, 0, 0)

CBs Thrown At: Tramaine Brock 8, 4, 6, 2, 9 (3-16, 2-56, 3-80, 2-24-2, 2-50-2), Rashard Robinson 6, 2 (3-20, 1-11)

Observations: Jeremy Kerley has emerged as the 49ers No. 1 WR with 22 targets in the last two weeks and a nice 8-102-1 game on Thursday night. However, Chip Kelly has come out and said that he would be open to a QB change. There’s no telling how the target distribution will set up with Colin Kaepernick or Christian Ponder behind center.

Seattle Seahawks - Bye Week 5

Observations: Jacquizz Rodgers had a massive workload with 101 rushing yards on 30 (!!) carries and catching five of six targets for 28 yards. That workload, however, will be short-lived with Doug Martin expected to return after their bye week. Mike Evans had yet another double-digit target game. He out-targeted Vincent Jackson, Adam Humphries and Cameron Brate combined.

Washington Redskins

Targets: Jordan Reed (11, 7, 7, 10, 11), DeSean Jackson (10, 5, 8, 2, 7), Pierre Garcon (6, 7, 7, 5, 7), Jamison Crowder (10, 8, 7, 3, 3), Chris Thompson (2, 4, 2, 4, 4), Vernon Davis (1, 5, 0, 1, 4), Matt Jones (1, 1, 2, 2, 2), Josh Doctson (1, 5, 0, 0, 0), Ryan Grant (1, 1, 1, 0, 0), Niles Paul (0, 1, 0, 0, 0), Rashad Ross (0, 0, 0, 0, 1)

Carries: Matt Jones (7, 13, 17, 22, 14), Chris Thompson (4, 2, 6, 3, 2), Rob Kelley (0, 0, 4, 1, 3), Kirk Cousins (1, 2, 3, 0, 1)

RZ Targets: Jamison Crowder (4, 1, 3, 0, 1), Jordan Reed (1, 2, 0, 3, 0), Pierre Garcon (0, 2, 1, 1, 1), Josh Doctson (0, 3, 0, 0, 0), Chris Thompson (0, 0, 0, 2, 0), DeSean Jackson (1, 0, 0, 0, 1), Ryan Grant (0, 1, 0, 0, 0), Vernon Davis (0, 1, 0, 0, 0)

RZ Carries: Matt Jones (1, 3, 2, 6, 2), Rob Kelley (0, 0, 2, 1, 0), Chris Thompson (1, 0, 0, 1, 0), Kirk Cousins (0, 0, 1, 0, 0)

CBs Thrown At: Josh Norman 5, 3, 7, 7 (3-40, 0-0, 5-78, 4-42-1), Quinton Dunbar 4 (3-24), Kendall Fuller 6 (6-31)

Observations: After a steady role in this offense for the first three weeks, Jamison Crowder’s has back-to-back games with a mere three targets. Jordan Reed is far and away the most reliable pass-catching option on the Redskins. He is receiving No. 1 WR type volume, which is a rarity at such a volatile position. Reed ranks third in routes run (176) among tight ends and is the second-most targeted TE (44) just behind Greg Olsen.
