Week 9 NFC Targets and Touches

by Graham Barfield
Updated On: October 4, 2018, 4:04 pm ET

In case you missed it, the AFC Targets and Touches column can be found here.

From here on out, this column will only have players’ six most recent games, regardless if they were active or on a bye. Targets and touches will be in descending order of games played.

All targets and touches data is compiled from Pro Football Reference.

Note: if a player has an asterisk next to a number in their data set that indicates the player was injured during the game. Also, this data will stick to fantasy relevant players meaning that running backs and wide receivers that only see one target or touch per-game will not be included.

Arizona Cardinals

Targets: Larry Fitzgerald (11, 9, 7, 10, 5, 11), John Brown (5, 10, 4, 14, 6, 0) – Active, but played zero snaps in Week 8, Chris Johnson (2, 3, 0, 1, 0, 1), David Johnson (3, 10, 0, 1, 2, 2), Andre Ellington (0, 0, 0, 2, 4, 1), Michael Floyd (5, 7, 3, 8, 4, 8)

RB Touches: Chris Johnson (23, 19, 11, 15, 18, 30), David Johnson (10, 7, 3, 4, 5, 3), Andre Ellington (0, 0, 3, 3, 6, 3)

Red zone Targets: John Brown (0, 1, 1, 3, 2, 0), Larry Fitzgerald (3, 1, 1, 0, 1, 1), Michael Floyd (2, 0, 0, 3, 1, 1), David Johnson (0, 1, 0, 0, 1, 0)

Red zone Carries: Chris Johnson (4, 4, 1, 1, 4, 5), David Johnson (1, 1, 2, 1, 1, 0)

CBs Thrown At: Jerraud Powers 6, 3, 4, 14, 2, 1 (4-83-1, 1-14, 3-36-2, 8-119, 2-18, 1-6) – Active, but played zero snaps in Week 8, Tyrann Mathieu 3, 5, 10, 5, 8, 8 (1-2, 4-56-1, 5-33-2, 2-86-1, 4-21, 4-26-1), Patrick Peterson 1, 2, 6, 6, 5, 5 (0-0, 1-(-1), 4-48, 2-26, 3-41, 4-38)

Analysis: John Brown (hamstrings) was “active” in Week 8, but didn’t play any snaps against the Browns. The Cardinals’ are on a bye in Week 9 and Brown should be ready to play in Week 10 after an extended rest. After saying Andre Ellington would receive “more touches” in Week 8, Bruce Arians proceeded to give Ellington just three carries and 33.3% of snaps against Cleveland. Here are Ellington’s snap shares in the three previous weeks: 31.3%, 12.5%, and 29%. Arians has continually lied about his player's usage for years now.

Atlanta Falcons

Targets: Julio Jones (20, 6, 10, 10, 17, 13), Devonta Freeman (5, 6, 8, 10, 3, 8), Roddy White (0, 4, 4, 4, 4, 3), Leonard Hankerson (6, 8, 4, 6, 0*, 0), Tevin Coleman (0, 0, 0, 0, 1, 1), Jacob Tamme (1, 0, 10, 5, 5, 12)

RB Touches: Devonta Freeman (35, 19, 34, 21, 27, 27) and Tevin Coleman (0, 0, 2, 4, 3, 4)

Red zone Targets: Julio Jones (6, 0, 0, 1, 3, 1), Roddy White (0, 0, 1, 1, 0, 1), Devonta Freeman (2, 0, 1, 1, 0, 3), Leonard Hankerson (1, 1, 2, 1, 0, 0), Tevin Coleman (0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0), Jacob Tamme (0, 0, 0, 0, 2, 2)

Red zone Carries: Devonta Freeman (8, 2, 5, 0, 3, 8) and Tevin Coleman (0, 0, 0, 0, 1, 0)

CBs Thrown At: Desmond Trufant 3, 8, 3, 2, 2, 3 (1-20, 3-47, 2-16, 1-19, 1-6, 2-41-1) and Robert Alford 0, 6, 6, 3, 10, 4 (0-0, 2-21, 1-9, 3-38, 6-48, 0-0)

Analysis: Again, there really isn’t much to say here with the Falcons offense. Julio Jones and Devonta Freeman are no-brainer every week starters, but I do want to note Julio is clearly 100% healthy after dealing with a hamstring issue two to three weeks ago. He is now on pace to catch 140 balls for 1,784 yards and 12 touchdowns this year.

Carolina Panthers

Targets: Greg Olsen (14, 11, 6, 11, 5, 12), Jonathan Stewart (1, 1, 0, 1, 1, 2), Ted Ginn (9, 6, 3, 4, 8, 10), Devin Funchess (4, 4, 2, 6, 2, 1), Jerricho Cotchery (1, 0, 0, 4, 1, 3), Corey Brown (4, 0, 3, 3, 5, 5)

RB Touches: Jonathan Stewart (18, 14, 10, 21, 24, 25)

Red zone Targets: Greg Olsen (1, 5, 2, 0, 0, 1), Ted Ginn (0, 0, 2, 0, 0, 0), Devin Funchess (0, 1, 1, 0, 0, 0), Corey Brown (0, 0, 0, 0, 2, 1)

Red zone Carries: Jonathan Stewart (1, 2, 1, 5, 5, 4), Cam Newton (2, 3, 2, 1, 1, 4), Mike Tolbert (1, 4, 2, 0, 2, 0)

CBs Thrown At: Josh Norman 12, 6, 8, 2, 2, 7 (6-40, 4-43, 2-31, 2-(-2), 1-3, 3-29), Bene Benwikere 10, 8, 5, 3, 8, 7 (6-52, 6-50, 4-39, 1-2, 7-62, 6-69-1), Charles Tillman 7, 9, 3, 6, 5, 7 (4-61, 8-77, 2-15, 2-17, 2-17, 3-44)

Analysis: Here are Cam Newton’s weekly finishes this year: QB21, QB3, QB3, QB14, QB11, QB16, and QB14. Outside of the one down game in Week 1 (against Jacksonville), Newton has been quite consistent on a weekly basis (never finishing lower than QB16 in his last six games) as his rushing ability buoys his floor.

Chicago Bears

Targets: Alshon Jeffery (0, 0, 0, 0, 11, 15), Matt Forte (5, 3, 4, 7, 5, 4*), Martellus Bennett (6, 5, 13, 11, 11, 5), Eddie Royal (8, 3, 10, 0, 5, 3), Marquess Wilson (2, 5, 2, 9, 8, 3), Jeremy Langford (0, 0, 0, 2, 2, 1)

RB Touches: Matt Forte (19, 20, 29, 23, 27, 14*) and Jeremy Langford (6, 0, 1, 3, 6, 12)

Red zone Targets: Alshon Jeffery (0, 0, 0, 0, 2, 2), Matt Forte (1, 0, 0, 1, 2, 0), Eddie Royal (1, 0, 2, 0, 0, 0), Martellus Bennett (0, 0, 2, 1, 3, 0), Marquess Wilson (0, 0, 0, 1, 4, 0, 0)

Red zone Carries: Matt Forte (1, 0, 3, 0, 0, 0) and Jeremy Langford (0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 1)

CBs Thrown At: Kyle Fuller 4, 2, 2, 3, 9, 6 (3-60-2, 1-4, 1-17, 2-15, 8-60-2, 2-24), Tracy Porter 10, 8, 8, 7 (5-58, 4-61-1, 5-71-1, 3-43), Sherrick McManis 2, 3, 7, 3, 6, 1 (2-12-1, 3-15, 4-60-1, 1-12, 5-102-1, 1-40-1)

Analysis: The good news: Matt Forte (MCL) doesn’t need surgery and the Bears’ expect him to return in 2015. The bad news: Forte is likely to miss “at least two weeks” with his knee injury meaning rookie Jeremy Langford is now the de facto starter in Chicago for the near future. We don’t have much of a sample on Langford as all of his 2015 carries have come in a change-of-pace role, but he’s stepping into an enormous opportunity. Matt Forte has handled 68.3% of the Bears’ carries in 2015 and has been on the field for 79.2% of snaps.

Dallas Cowboys

Targets: Dez Bryant (6), Jason Witten (8, 8, 6, 6, 8, 4), Terrance Williams (7, 2, 10, 6, 7, 2), Cole Beasley (5, 4, 6, 6, 2, 1), Darren McFadden (2, 0, 0, 10, 2, 8), Christine Michael (0, 0, 1, 2)

RB Touches: Darren McFadden (12, 6, 10, 14, 31, 26) and Christine Michael (1, 1, 6, 5)

Red zone Targets: Dez Bryant (0), Jason Witten (1, 0, 0, 2, 1, 0), Cole Beasley (1, 0, 1, 0, 0, 1), Terrance Williams (1, 0, 5, 1, 0, 0), Gavin Escobar (2, 0, 0, 2, 0, 0), Darren McFadden (0, 0, 0, 1, 0, 1)

Red zone Carries: Darren McFadden (0, 3, 0, 1, 3, 1)

CBs Thrown At: Brandon Carr 4, 7, 8, 1, 5, 7 (2-24-1, 5-54-1, 8-57-1, 1-16, 4-73, 4-45) and Morris Claiborne 6, 11, 11, 4, 2, 4 (5-28, 6-77, 7-67, 4-120-1, 0-0, 3-35)

Analysis: There were reports that Dez Bryant (foot) would be on a “pitch count” in his first game in two months and that wasn’t necessarily the case against Seattle; Bryant played on 82% of the snaps and saw a target on 18.8% of his routes. Bryant’s return is a great sign, however, and his immediate production will be monitored closely as he attempts to return to form.

With Joseph Randle cut, Darren McFadden is now the Cowboys’ workhorse running back. McFadden’s name draws ire in the fantasy community, but it’s hard to ignore the fact he’s seen 57 touches and has played on 79.5% of the snaps in the last two weeks. With all of the carnage at the running back position in fantasy football this year, McFadden is a strong RB2 every week just based on opportunity alone.

Detroit Lions

Targets: Calvin Johnson (13, 11, 7, 9, 7, 10), Eric Ebron (5, 3*, 0, 0, 5, 5), Golden Tate (7, 4, 18, 9, 6, 7), Ameer Abdullah (5, 5, 2, 4, 0, 2), Theo Riddick (10, 5, 13, 6, 4, 7), Joique Bell (1, 0, 0, 0, 2, 1), Lance Moore (6, 3, 3, 8, 6, 3)

RB Touches: Ameer Abdullah (10, 15, 7, 17, 8, 1), Joique Bell (11, 0, 0, 0, 5, 7), Theo Riddick (8, 6, 10, 10, 6, 11)

Red zone Targets: Calvin Johnson (3, 1, 0, 2, 2, 0), Ameer Abdullah (1, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0), Golden Tate (1, 0, 0, 3, 0, 0), Theo Riddick (3, 0, 1, 0, 2, 1), Lance Moore (0, 0, 2, 1, 0, 0), Eric Ebron (0, 0, 0, 0, 1, 0)

Red zone Carries: Joique Bell (2, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0), Ameer Abdullah (0, 1, 0, 2, 2, 0), Theo Riddick (0, 0, 0, 2, 0, 1)

CBs Thrown At: Rashean Mathis 4, 11, 2, 5, 2, 8 (4-22, 8-43, 2-84, 4-63-1, 1-46, 6-112-1) – Inactive in Week 8 and Darius Slay 6, 5, 2, 6, 5, 3 (5-123-1, 3-26, 2-25, 2-22, 4-51, 1-7)

Analysis: What is there to say here? The Lions simply desperately need their bye in Week 9. Detroit is 29th in points per drive and their offensive line is in shambles. According to Football Outsiders, Detroit ranks 25th in run blocking and 19th in pass protection (adjusted sack rate: 6.2%).

Green Bay Packers

Targets: Randall Cobb (11, 12, 8, 6, 5, 9), Davante Adams (5, 2*, 0, 0, 0, 2), Eddie Lacy (0*, 3, 3, 1, 2, 2), James Jones (3, 8, 6, 3, 5, 2), Richard Rodgers (4, 4, 6, 8, 5, 4), James Starks (4, 1, 2, 6, 2, 2), Ty Montgomery (4, 2, 6, 5, 2, 0), Jeff Janis (0, 1, 0, 0, 4, 0)

RB Touches: Eddie Lacy (3*, 13, 19, 14, 6, 13) and James Starks (24, 18, 11, 8, 11, 7)

Red zone Targets: Randall Cobb (1, 1, 4, 3, 0, 0), James Jones, (2, 1, 0, 0, 0, 2), Davante Adams (2, 0, 0*, 0, 0, 0), Eddie Lacy (1, 0*, 0, 1, 0, 0), Ty Montgomery (0, 2, 1, 0, 0, 1), Richard Rodgers (0, 2, 0, 1, 0, 1), James Starks (0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 2) – No Red Zone Targets in Week 8

Red zone Carries: Eddie Lacy (0*, 1, 2, 0, 1, 2) and James Starks (2, 1, 1, 0, 3, 0)

CBs Thrown At: Sam Shields 1, 5, 4, 7, 14, 0* (1-0, 4-61, 1-7, 1-10, 9-117, 0-0), Casey Hayward 5, 8, 2, 6, 7, 10 (4-69-1, 7-67-1, 1-1, 2-5, 4-54, 7-135), Damarious Randall 1, 8, 8, 2, 7, 6 (0-0, 3-77, 4-70, 2-28, 4-40, 5-72)

Analysis: The Packers to-date schedule has been anything but easy, but this is clearly not the same offense we saw in 2014 that ranked first in points per drive (2.63). The Packers sorely miss Jordy Nelson’s consistency and lid-popping ability and there is some merit to wondering if Nelson’s absence has negatively impacted Randall Cobb. With Nelson in the lineup from 2013-2014, Cobb averaged 5.6 receptions, 78.2 yards, and 0.73 touchdowns on 7.9 targets per-game. This year, Cobb is averaging a stat line of 5.1-53.9-0.57 (on 8 targets) per-game.

Minnesota Vikings

Targets: Stefon Diggs (9, 9, 9, 12), Mike Wallace (3, 4, 10, 9, 5, 4), Kyle Rudolph (7, 5, 4, 5, 2, 2), Charles Johnson (3, 4, 0, 0, 2, 1), Jarius Wright (2, 4, 0, 3, 6, 2), Adrian Peterson (2, 0, 6, 1, 3, 2)

RB Touches: Adrian Peterson (31, 20, 16, 27, 22, 22)

Red zone Targets:  Kyle Rudolph (0, 3, 1, 1, 2, 1), Adrian Peterson (0, 1, 0, 0, 0, 0), Jarius Wright (0, 1, 0, 0, 0, 1), Mike Wallace (0, 0, 0, 2, 2, 1), Stefon Diggs (2, 0, 1) – No Red Zone Targets in Week 8

Red zone Carries: Adrian Peterson (12, 6, 0, 5, 3, 0)

CBs Thrown At: Xavier Rhodes 13, 5*, 5, 9, 5, 9 (7-62-1, 3-79-1, 4-72, 4-70-1, 4-40-1, 6-45-1), Terence Newman 5, 8, 7, 5, 0, 9 (2-17, 6-42, 4-63, 2-11, 0-0, 6-76), Captain Munnerlyn 9, 2, 5, 4, 6, 4  (6-45, 2-45, 4-36, 2-1, 3-55, 4-33)

Analysis: Stefon Diggs’ target share by week so far: 24.4%, 29%, 26.5%, and 41.4%(!). Diggs won’t see 41% of team targets over an extended stretch of games, but he’s settled in as Teddy Bridgewater’s go-to receiver. You don’t need me to tell you this, but Diggs is easily a “WR2” (top-24) in fantasy for the rest of the season.

New Orleans Saints

Targets: Brandin Cooks (8, 8, 9, 5, 13, 8), Mark Ingram (5, 7, 3, 3, 2, 5), Marques Colston (6, 5, 5, 0, 3, 9), C.J. Spiller (2, 5, 4, 5, 6, 4), Ben Watson (4, 3, 5, 12, 5, 10), Willie Snead (6, 11, 5, 7, 8), Josh Hill (1, 2, 1, 5, 1, 2)

RB Touches: Mark Ingram (19, 23, 14, 23, 16, 20) and C.J. Spiller (3, 7, 6, 7, 10, 6),

Red zone Targets: Brandin Cooks (0, 1, 1, 0, 1, 0), Mark Ingram (0, 1, 1, 0, 0, 0), Willie Snead (2, 0, 2, 0, 1, 1), Josh Hill (0, 1, 0, 2, 0, 1), Marques Colston (0, 1, 0, 0, 1, 0), Ben Watson (0, 1, 2, 1, 0, 1)

Red zone Carries: Mark Ingram (3, 4, 1, 5, 3, 3) and C.J. Spiller (0, 0, 0, 1, 0, 1)

CBs Thrown At: Brandon Browner 5, 5, 7, 5, 4, 8 (4-139, 3-78, 5-54, 4-47-1, 2-27-1, 6-55) and Delvin Breaux 2, 9, 7, 6, 10, 10 (0-0, 2-41-1, 6-58, 2-20, 4-150-2, 9-138-3)

Analysis: With Khiry Robinson (broken tibia, season ending I.R.) now out, Mark Ingram’s floor and ceiling are even higher. Here’s a great stat from Justin Bailey: Khiry Robinson had 11 carries inside of the 10-yard line, including five carries within five yards this year. C.J. Spiller has just 7.7% of red zone carries this year; this means Ingram might have one of the highest weekly touchdown ceilings of any running back in the league.

New York Giants

Targets: Odell Beckham (9, 12, 11, 8, 6, 9), Shane Vereen (3, 0, 8, 4, 3, 9), Rueben Randle (7, 6, 6*, 6, 5, 9), Larry Donnell (6, 7, 7, 5, 5, 1*), Rashad Jennings (3, 2, 4, 3, 0, 3), Andre Williams (0, 1, 0, 0, 0, 0) Dwayne Harris (1, 6, 8, 4, 2, 7), Orleans Darkwa (1, 0*)

RB Touches: Rashad Jennings (14, 9, 15, 16, 5, 12), Shane Vereen (6, 5, 13, 5, 5, 10), Andre Williams (14, 11, 3, 5, 4, 5), Orleans Darkwa (8, 4)

Red zone Targets: Odell Beckham (1, 1, 4, 1, 0, 3), Larry Donnell (2, 1, 2, 0, 1, 0), Rueben Randle (1, 2, 0, 0, 0, 1), Shane Vereen (1, 0, 1, 0, 0, 2), Dwayne Harris (0, 1, 1, 0, 0, 2)

Red zone Carries: Rashad Jennings (1, 2, 1, 0, 0, 1), Andre Williams (2, 0, 2, 0, 0, 2), Shane Vereen (0, 0, 2, 0, 1, 0), Orleans Darkwa (1, 2)

CBs Thrown At: Prince Amukamara 10, 4, 8, 9, 5 (7-52, 3-49, 4-54, 4-58, 3-16-1) – Inactive in Week 6-8 (Pectoral tear) and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie 0*, 1, 5, 5, 6, 7 (0-0*, 0-0, 3-19, 5-62, 2-38, 4-31)

Analysis: Orleans Darkwa was building a role in the Giants four-headed monster, but is dealing with a “badly bruised tailbone” and is questionable for Week 9. Larry Donnell (neck) also left Week 8 early and is considered “week-to-week.”

Odell Beckham answered any questions about his health (hamstring) in Week 8, dropping a 8-130-3 receiving line on the Saints. He is now on pace for 100 receptions, 1,308 yards, and 14 touchdowns for the 2015 season.

Philadelphia Eagles – On Bye in Week 8

Targets: Jordan Matthews (9, 8, 8, 7, 11, 7), Zach Ertz (7, 2, 3, 7, 7, 8), Darren Sproles (4, 6, 3, 2, 2, 10), DeMarco Murray (5, 0, 2, 8, 4, 4), Nelson Agholor (6, 4, 4, 1*, 0, 0), Ryan Mathews (0, 4, 0, 3, 1, 3)

RB Touches: DeMarco Murray (17, 0, 10, 27, 26, 20), Darren Sproles (5, 15, 4, 6, 3, 8), Ryan Mathews (1, 27, 5, 11, 10, 9)

Red zone Targets: Jordan Matthews (2, 1, 0, 2, 0, 1), DeMarco Murray (1, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0), Zach Ertz (1, 0, 1, 0, 0, 1), Nelson Agholor (1, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0), Darren Sproles (0, 1, 1, 0, 0, 1), Ryan Mathews (0, 0, 0, 1, 0, 0)

Red zone Carries: DeMarco Murray (3, 0, 1, 5, 1, 3), Ryan Mathews (0, 3, 0, 2, 1, 0), Darren Sproles (0, 3, 0, 0, 0, 0)

CBs Thrown At: Byron Maxwell 9, 6, 0*, 4, 5, 6 (6-86-1, 6-75 0-0, 2-39, 4-38. 3-18) and Nolan Carroll 5, 9, 9, 11, 8, 7 (4-26, 5-49, 6-79, 6-113, 5-39, 5-84)

San Francisco 49ers

Targets: Anquan Boldin (4, 7, 12, 9, 7, 0), Torrey Smith (2, 5, 2, 6, 1, 5), Carlos Hyde (1, 1, 5, 2, 0, 0), Quinton Patton (3, 2, 3, 3, 3, 4), Mike Davis (3, 0, 0, 0, 0, 3)

RB Touches: Carlos Hyde (16, 9, 22, 23, 11, 0) and Mike Davis (9, 8, 0, 1, 0, 12)

Red zone Targets: Anquan Boldin (1, 1, 5, 3, 1, 0), Carlos Hyde (0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0), Torrey Smith (0, 1, 0, 0, 0, 0), Mike Davis (3, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0)

Red zone Carries: Carlos Hyde (5, 1, 1, 1, 5, 5), Mike Davis (0, 5, 0, 0, 0, 0), Colin Kaepernick (0, 1, 1, 1, 0, 0) – No red zone carries in Week 7 and 8

CBs Thrown At: Tramaine Brock 8, 4, 7, 10, 4, 5 (4-65-1, 3-15, 4-90, 4-57, 3-80-1, 2-14), Kenneth Acker 6, 7, 6, 5, 2, 2 (3-38, 5-98, 3-37, 2-41-1, 1-7, 1-66-1), Jimmie Ward 1, 7, 9, 6, 1, 3 (1-8-1, 5-44, 7-53, 6-47-1, 1-4, 3-25)

Analysis: Blaine Gabbert is now the ‘Niners starting quarterback. That should tell you all you need to know about the 2015 San Francisco 49ers.

Analysis: On paper, the Seahawks really should have a better offense than they have played to-date. Seattle is just behind Cleveland for 28th in points per drive (1.57) and is last in red zone touchdowns (5) and 25th in red zone plays (57). Seattle has their bye in Week 9 and will hopefully pick up their offense a bit as a result of the extended break.

St. Louis Rams

CBs Thrown At: Trumaine Johnson 2, 5, 9, 6, 7, 11 (1-3, 4-41, 7-84, 5-71-1, 7-65, 6-56), Janoris Jenkins 9, 9, 9, 1, 5, 6 (7-72-1, 8-77, 6-62, 0-0, 3-17, 2-11), Lamarcus Joyner 5, 3, 6, 9, 4, 3 (5-30, 2-11, 5-63, 6-97-1, 3-21, 2-15)

Analysis: In Todd Gurley’s last four games, he’s averaging 22 carries, 141.5 rushing yards, and 0.75 rushing touchdowns per-game. Just extrapolating those numbers over his full season (13 games) would give Gurley 1,836 rushing yards. That would break Eric Dickerson’s single-season rookie rushing record set back in 1983 (1,808 rushing yards).

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Targets: Mike Evans (0, 17, 8, 5, 12, 9), Vincent Jackson (5, 4, 15, 3, 2*, 0), Charles Sims (3, 2, 5, 4, 3, 4), Doug Martin (2, 0, 5, 3, 3, 1), Brandon Myers (0, 4, 3, 2, 0, 3)

Analysis: Austin Seferian-Jenkins (shoulder) should be ready to return in Week 9 while Vincent Jackson (knee) is likely out another week. In Seferian-Jenkins’ only healthy game this year all the way back in Week 1, he received seven targets against Tennessee. Jameis Winston has targeted his tight ends on 21.9% of his pass attempts this year which should leave Seferian-Jenkins a considerable role in the Bucs’ offense.
