Waiver Wired: Scoop up Nyquist

by Corey Abbott

Cody Eakin is still available in 83% of Yahoo leagues. He has 15 points in the last 17 games. Nick Schmaltz went from an 11% ownership last week to 20%, meaning he is still available in the vast majority of Yahoo leagues. He has three goals and six points in six games with the Coyotes. Adin Hill jumped from being owned in 10% of Yahoo leagues to 37%, but his time in the sun may be coming to a close.

Now, let’s get into this week’s suggestions:

Gustav Nyquist (DET) - LW, RW - Owned in 39% of Yahoo leagues

Nyquist has been red hot and should be snatched up if he’s still available.  Time is quickly running out to pick him up. He has compiled five goals and seven assists over the last 10 games. Nyquist was promoted to the top line alongside Dylan Larkin after Anthony Mantha was injured, which has resulted in multi-point performances in two of his last three appearances during a three-game point streak.

David Krejci (BOS) - C - Owned in 25% of Yahoo leagues

Krejci was flanked by Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak on Saturday night against Toronto and he responded with one goal and one assist. Boston’s offense has struggled since Patrice Bergeron was injured, but Krejci has provided the spark the team was looking for and is worthy of a flier.

Andrew Shaw (MTL) C, RW - Owned in 19% of Yahoo leagues

Shaw has generated one goal and two assists during a three-game point streak. He has amassed 14 points in the past 18 matches. Shaw has seen most of his playing time on the top line with Max Domi and Jonathan Drouin. He has also averaged 2.0 hits per game and a personal best 2.28 shots per game this campaign.

Pontus Aberg (ANA) - LW, RW - Owned in 15% of Yahoo leagues

Aberg has accounted for three goals and four helpers in the last six games. He has been playing with Ryan Getzlaf, which adds to his fantasy appeal. Daniel Sprong (owned in 3% of Yahoo leagues) has joined the top line of the Ducks following his acquisition from Pittsburgh. He has one goal in two appearances so far. Aberg has accumulated 15 points in 25 games this season.

Dylan Strome (CHI) - C - Owned in 8% of Yahoo leagues

Strome has been skating between Patrick Kane and Alex DeBrincat since he was obtained from Arizona. He has tallied three goals and one assist in six games as a member of the Blackhawks after he had seven goals in 48 career appearances with the Coyotes. Strome has been placed in a great position to succeed in Chicago and he is worthy of being on more fantasy rosters this season. His keeper value has also increased.

Ondrej Palat (TBL) - LW - Owned in 8% of Yahoo leagues

Palat returned from a 16-game absence due to a lower-body injury in late November. He has two goals and two assists in his last six contests. Palat finally got his first goals of the season on Saturday and more production could be around the corner. He has been playing alongside Steven Stamkos, who has heated up since Palat’s return, and Yanni Gourde.

Josh Leivo (VAN) - LW, RW - Owned in 7% of Yahoo leagues

Leivo went from skating on Toronto’s fourth line to playing alongside Brock Boeser and Elias Pettersson with Vancouver. He scored a goal in his first game with the Canucks after he was acquired from the Maple Leafs. He has registered six shots in two outings since the deal. Leivo has averaged a personal high 15:11 of ice time per game, which is a significant jump from the 10:32 of average ice time he was getting with Toronto. Leivo has the ability to finish the plays that Pettersson will create and is worthy of a pickup, especially with Vancouver’s busy upcoming schedule.

Andreas Johnsson (TOR) - LW - Owned in 6% of Yahoo leagues

Johnsson has two goals and two assists in the last two games as well as five goals and five assists in the past seven outings. He has been seeing time alongside Auston Matthews during that span and getting William Nylander on the second power-play unit with him will be a big help. Johnsson is finally living up to the potential that made him the Calder Cup playoff MVP last year.

Colin White (OTT) - C - Owned in 6% of Yahoo leagues

White has two goals and four helpers in the last eight games. He has been skating between Mark Stone and Brady Tkachuk, which has become Ottawa’s top line following Matt Duchene’s groin injury. White also sees action on the top power-play unit of the Senators. He is being given every opportunity to step up during Duchene’s absence.

Brett Connolly (WSH) - LW, RW - Owned in 2% of Yahoo leagues

Connolly has fit in nicely on the second line with Evgeny Kuznetsov and Jakub Vrana. He has provided one goal and four assists during a four-game point streak. Connolly has also been seeing time on the Capitals’ top power-play unit. He has been all over the depth chart this campaign, but he has 17 points in 28 games. That’s a 50-point pace if it continues, which would double his previous career-high for points in a season.
