Waiver Wired: Seize Schmaltz

by Corey Abbott

Gustav Nyquist went from a 39% ownership last week to 58%, so hopefully you were able to jump on adding him when you had the chance. David Krejci’s ownership increased from 25% a week ago when he appeared on Waiver Wired to 37%, while Andrew Shaw’s increased from 19% to 27%. Josh Leivo is still available in 92% of Yahoo leagues, while Colin White is taken in only 6% of Yahoo leagues.

Dennis Cholowski (owned in 7% of Yahoo leagues) is worth taking a chance on or adding to your watch list now that Mike Green is out three-to-five weeks due to a lower-body injury. He is quarterbacking the top power-play unit again, where he has seven of his 13 points this season.

Now, let’s get into this week’s suggestions:

Ondrej Kase (ANA) - RW - Owned in 28% of Yahoo leagues

Kase has compiled five goals and nine points in six games this month. He has 14 points, including eight goals on a whopping 55 shots, in 16 games this season. Kase has been skating with Ryan Getzlaf on the top line with Rickard Rakell sidelined by an ankle injury. He should be scooped up if he is available with the Ducks set to play four games on the road this week.

Ryan Dzingel (OTT) - LW, RW - Owned in 25% of Yahoo leagues

Dzingel has made some appearances on Waiver Wired this year and he has continued to produce. He has 12 goals and 12 assists in 32 games, including six points in the past eight contests. Dzingel has played up and down the lineup this year, while seeing time on the power play.

Nick Schmaltz (ARI) - C, LW - Owned in 23% of Yahoo leagues

Schmaltz has been excellent for the Coyotes since he was acquired from Chicago. He has four goals and five helpers in nine games for Arizona since the trade. Schmaltz only had two goals and 11 points in 23 appearances with the Blackhawks prior to the move. The change of scenery has proven to be beneficial. Schmaltz has been flourishing with Clayton Keller in an increased role. He has been averaging more ice time and has ramped up his shots per game to a personal best 2.22.

Paul Stastny (VGK) - C - Owned in 22% of Yahoo leagues

Stastny returned from a lengthy absence on Friday. He missed 30 games due to a lower-body injury. Stastny hasn’t picked up a point in four games with Vegas this year, but that is sure to change quickly. The Golden Knights put him back on the second line alongside Alex Tuch and Max Pacioretty will probably be back alongside them once he is recovered from his minor injury. Vegas has a busy upcoming schedule with a game Sunday afternoon prior to four matches, including three at home, this upcoming week. Stastny should finally get on the scoresheet and become a key player in the team’s offense moving forward.

Alex Chiasson (EDM) - RW - Owned in 20% of Yahoo leagues

Chiasson is back on track after a three-game pointless skid earlier at the start of December. He has three goals and two assists in the last five games. Chiasson has been a pleasant surprise for the Oilers with 14 goals and 18 points in 27 contests. The fact that he is playing big minutes alongside Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl makes him worthy of fantasy attention as well.

Kevin Hayes (NYR) - C - Owned in 17% of Yahoo leagues

Hayes has accounted for two-point performances in each of the last three games. He has three goals and three assists during that span. Hayes is up to 23 points, which ranks second on the Rangers, in 31 matches this campaign. He has been playing on the second line with Chris Kreider and Pavel Buchnevich, but he has seen time alongside Mika Zibanejad as well.

Brandon Saad (CHI) - LW - Owned in 17% of Yahoo leagues

Saad has been benefiting from some red-hot play from Jonathan Toews recently. He has one goal and three helpers in the past two games, while Toews has a pair of three-point efforts during that time. They should be able to continue their improved play this week with four games on tap. That would make Saad a solid pickup for as long as his productive play lasts.

Jakub Vrana (WSH) - LW, RW - Owned in 12% of Yahoo leagues

Vrana has been playing well on the second line with Evgeny Kuznetsov. They have been playing recently with Tom Wilson, who has surprisingly been a force offensively this season with 15 points in 12 outings. Vrana has four goals and one assist in the past six matches. If he continues at his current pace then the 22-year-old forward could produce his first 50-point season in the NHL.

Mathieu Perreault (WPG) - C, LW, RW - Owned in 8% of Yahoo leagues

Perreault has been doing plenty of damage offensively despite seeing most of his playing outside of Winnipeg’s top-six forward group. Still, he has rubbed shoulders with some of the team’s top players during his recent hot streak. Perrault has accumulated nine points in his last 12 matches. He has reached the scoresheet in seven of his past eight outings, including each of the last four games. Perrault has three goals and one assist during that four-game stretch. He is worth a flier in deeper leagues.

Artturi Lehkonen (MTL) - LW, RW - Owned in 4% of Yahoo leagues

Lehkonen has caught fire this month with four goals and three assists in eight games. He had two goals and 12 points in 25 matches prior to his recent offensive outburst. Lehkonen has been clicking with Paul Byron and Jesperi Kotkaniemi.
