The Week Ahead

COVID still at the forefront of the schedule

by Michael Finewax
Updated On: February 10, 2021, 4:18 pm ET

This article gets tougher and tougher to write because of the ever-changing scheduling due to the coronavirus. There are now five current teams who have had their games postponed (Buffalo, Colorado, Minnesota, New Jersey and Vegas) after Dallas and Carolina have already had games postponed earlier in the season that still is less than one month old.

Not only that, other teams have been affected by the postponements, including Anaheim, Arizona, Boston, Florida, Los Angeles, Nashville, New York Islanders, Pittsburgh, San Jose, St. Louis and Tampa Bay. That doesn’t include outbreaks that didn’t cause postponements in Chicago, Detroit and Washington.

The only Division spared has been the North, but that is likely by luck (or maybe the lockdowns in Canada have suppressed the spread.

Any crossed off games have been postponed due to COVID-19 protocol and are expected to be replayed at a later date.

NOTE: The Philadelphia-New York Rangers game scheduled for February 16th was rescheduled on Saturday and will be played this week on February 14.

Notes

The Ducks were supposed to play three games this week but their game against San Jose was moved to Tuesday April 6...The Ducks are off to a pretty good start at 4-5-2 but that has so much to do with the goaltending of John Gibson who is 4-4-2 with a 2.34 GAA and a .924 save percentage and is one of the top-three goalies in the NHL...After 11 games, the leading goal scorer on the Ducks has only three goals...That’s Jakob Silfverberg, Nicolas Deslauriers, Max Comtois (who hasn’t scored in nine games) and Danton Heinen who are the leaders...The points leaders are not impressive as well as Ryan Getzlaf, Carter Rowney, Silfverberg and Deslauriers each have five points in 11 contests...Needless to say, you shouldn’t have any Ducks in your fantasy lineup outside of Gibson unless it’s a family friend or relative. I get that.

The Coyotes games against Colorado were postponed but the NHL added a pair of games against the Blues, playing St. Louis Saturday February 6 as well as Monday February 8...Antti Raanta returned to the net Thursday and while he ran out of gas in the final 3:15, he still managed to stop 40 shots in a 4-3 win over St. Louis. Raanta, who was playing for the first time in almost three weeks, had a shutout going until the Blues scored at the 16:45 mark and then potted a couple more to make the game close...Christian Dvorak is off to a great start with six goals and 11 points in 10 games...Nick Schmaltz has a three-game points streak going and has nine points this season...Niklas Hjalmarsson has not had a point in 10 games.

BOSTON

Notes

The Bruins play three games in four nights...Look for Tuukka Rask to play twice and Jaroslav Halak once this week...Monday’s game against Buffalo has been postponed...David Pastrnak did not need a lot of time to get back in playing shape. After missing the first seven games of the season recovering from off-season hip surgery, Pastrnak has five goals and seven points in just three games including a hat trick and four point effort Wednesday in a 4-3 overtime win over the Flyers...Patrice Bergeron is off to a great start with six goals and nine assists in 10 games while Brad Marchand is one point back...Marchand has only two penalty minutes this season and if you took him expecting more, you are quite disappointed in that part of his fantasy hockey value...Nick Ritchie has been a big surprise as well with four goals and nine points including four goals and seven points with the man-advantage.

Notes

The Sabres have had an outbreak of COVID-19 and currently Taylor Hall, Rasmus Ristolainen, Tobias Rieder, Brandon Montour and Jake McCabe are in protocol...You can also add in 61-year-old head coach Ralph Krueger who tested positive Thursday...That makes at least four games the Sabres will have to make up as the NHL has postponed their games until February 8 at the earliest...Krueger had been pleased with the play of former first round pick Casey Mittelstadt before the outbreak as he seemed to have made strides in the off-season, especially as far as his foot speed is concerned...Sam Reinhart is out with an upper-body injury but his fantasy managers may get a break with all the make up games down the road...Jack Eichel leads the Sabres with 11 points, one better than Victor Olofsson.

CALGARY

Notes

The Flames signing in the off-season of Jacob Markstrom continues to pay dividends as he has solidified the Calgary goaltending situation. Even on Thursday when the Flames dropped a 4-1 decision to Winnipeg, Markstrom gave them a chance to win with outstanding goaltending...He is 4-3-1 with a 2.37 GAA and a .920 save percentage...Sam Bennett was a healthy scratch Thursday and it could be due to the fact that his agent asked for a change of scenery and out of Calgary...He was replaced on the top line by Dominik Simon...Johnny Gaudreau is tied for the Flames lead in points with Elias Lindholm at 11 but it is his improvement on the defensive side that has coach Geoff Ward raving. Unfortunately, his nine-game points streak came to an end on Thursday...Juuso Valimaki has assists in two of his last three games.

The Blackhawks continue to get fine goaltending from Kevin Lankinen as he is 4-1-3 with a 2.32 GAA and a .928 save percentage...The Finnish netminder has a firm grasp of the number one job in Chicago as the Blackhawks are 0-3-1 when either Collin Delia or Malcolm Subban have started...Patrick Kane had a goal and three assists Thursday to give him 15 points in 12 games...Kane is currently tied for fourth in NHL scoring...Dominik Kubalik is also off to a great start with 11 points in 12 contests...The Blackhawks are having trouble once regulation is over as they have yet to win in the four games that have gone into extra time...Alex DeBrincat is back in the lineup after returning from the COVID list. He has two goals and four points in the two games since his return and has four goals and 10 points in eight games, much better than his mediocre season of 2019-20 when he had only 18 goals and 45 points in 70 games.

COLORADO

The Avalanche have had their games postponed until at least February 11...Colorado suffered some big losses this past week but none were bigger than the injury to their superstar, Nathan MacKinnon...He is week-to-week as is goaltender Pavel Francouz (lower body), defenseman Devon Toews who took a shot off his foot Saturday night, Matt Calvert (upper body), Pierre-Edouard Bellemare (lower body) and Erik Johnson who has an upper-body injury...Add in Gabriel Landeskog and Tyson Jost who are in COVID-19 protocol and the Avalanche have some trouble in the health department...Philipp Grubauer will get most of the starts for a while as Francouz has been placed on long-term injured reserve...The Avs will have to rely on third-string goalie Hunter Miska to replace Grubauer on occasion...Joonas Donskoi is off to a very good start with five goals and eight points in 11 games.

The Panthers complete a six-game homestand this week...They are not getting good goaltending from Sergei Bobrovsky who gave up six goals in an overtime loss to Nashville Thursday after having a 5-3 lead with just over two minutes to go in regulation...Chris Driedger has been much the better goaltender as Bobrovsky is 3-0-1 albeit with a 3.57 GAA and a .881 save percentage while Driedger is 2-0-1 with a 1.95 GAA and a .937 save percentage...It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to figure out who is better...Jonathan Huberdeau had a huge five point night Thursday to give him 12 points in seven games...Patric Hornqvist has been great since his off-season trade from Pittsburgh as he has five goals and eight points...Aaron Ekblad had only five goals last season, his first year with less than 10 since he came into the league six years ago. He currently has three goals and six points in seven games and looks to be back and a fantasy asset.

He has been the better netminder this season as Jonathan Quick has been average at best. The Islanders had a couple of games with Buffalo postponed this past week...Anthony Beauvillier has been skating and rehabbing and should return this week from a lower-body injury that has kept him out of action since January 24...The Islanders have had trouble scoring, as per usual under Barry Trotz, and while Mathew Barzal leads the team with four goals in nine games, only Anders Lee and Jordan Eberle have three as the Isles have only 19 goals in nine games...Semyon Varlamov has been very good in the Islanders net, going 3-2-1 with a 2.00 GAA and a .924 save percentage...The same cannot be said for rookie Ilya Sorokin who is 0-2-1 with a 3.65 GAA and a .871 save percentage...Sorokin had a very good career in the KHL and should not be written off after only three starts so if he is available in deep leagues, he is a good player to stash.

The Senators have been the worst team in the NHL and it doesn’t get any easier this week as they play four games including three games in four nights...You have to wonder if third-string goaltender Joey Daccord will ever get a shot after some poor performances by Matt Murray and Marcus Hogberg but Murray finally redeemed himself a bit with a 3-2 over Montreal Thursday in which he stopped 38 shots...He still has a 4.40 GAA and a .866 save percentage but he has sandwiched wins over Toronto and Montreal around a 0-4-1 record...Tim Stutzle has goals in three straight games and had a hand in all three goals Thursday with the first two assists in his young NHL career...The Senators have replaced veteran Braydon Coburn on the blueline with prospect Erik Brannstrom as the Senators are dead last in the North.
