And then there was one. Nick Ritchie, the second-last RFA to hold out, finally inked a bridge deal with the Anaheim Ducks, leaving the Maple Leafs William Nylander as the lone remaining RFA.
While Toronto GM Kyle Dubas apparently met on Wednesday in Zurich, Switzerland with Nylander’s agent, no numbers were exchanged at the time and you have to wonder if a bridge deal is in the cards to get him back in the lineup.
Ritchie should be ready to go shortly and that will help the situation in Anaheim as they are still hurting up front with Ryan Getzlaf, Patrick Eaves and Corey Perry in addition to Ritchie, still out of the lineup.
The situation in Toronto is different as Kasperi Kapanen has seamlessly moved into the spot on the Auston Matthews line previously held by Nylander and has eight points in five games playing with the NHL’s leading scorer.

INJURIES
Justin Schultz is out four months with a broken leg. (Click here to see the rest of the injury list.)
Note: A tired team is one that has played the day or night before and is going against a team that did not play the previous day or night. The reverse is true for a rested team.

As mentioned above, Nick Ritchie inked a three-year deal on Wednesday. Jakob Silfverberg has a fractured finger tip and is currently out of action, adding to the Ducks woes up front, but he should not be out long. Despite all the injuries, the Ducks are 5-1-1 this season. Ryan Getzlaf is close to returning from a groin injury and the betting from this corner is that he will be back this week. Anaheim signed Jake Dotchin to a one-year deal. He previously was with Tampa Bay but they terminated his contract after he gained 30-35 pounds in the off-season and the Lightning were not happy with that scenario. Coach Randy Carlyle wants to play rookie Troy Terry with only skilled players and won’t let him play just on the fourth line to keep him in the lineup. Hopefully that bodes well for Terry but look for him to be sent to the minors once most of their forwards are healthy to get some playing time.

Alex Galchenyuk (lower body) could be back this week if not sooner. He has not yet played this season but was cleared for contact in practice on Tuesday. Jakob Chychrun is joining the Coyotes during their current road trip that ends in Columbus. Unfortunately, the news on Christian Dvorak isn’t as good as he suffered a setback in his return from a lower-body injury and was not on the ice earlier in the week. Antti Raanta is off to a nice start. He is only 2-3 but has a 1.98 GAA and a .921 save percentage. Clayton Keller had 65 points in his rookie season last year but had only one point in five games before a two point effort Thursday.

The Bruins finish their road trip in Canada against divisional rival Ottawa and finally return home to play the Flyers. The top line is carrying the Bruins but the rest of the forwards are not chipping in enough save for Jake DeBrusk who has a pair of goals. Torey Krug is still out with an ankle injury but could start skating this week. Patrice Bergeron was the first star of the week with four goals and nine points in three games. David Krejci had five assists in his first six games before finally scoring his first of the season Thursday. Jaroslav Halak has been more than capable as the backup to Tuukka Rask as he is 2-0-1 with a 1.69 GAA and a .939 save percentage.

All three of Conor Sheary’s goals have come on the power play. Linus Ullmark has only played one game but it was a 36 save shutout against the Coyotes on Saturday. Carter Hutton is off to a shaky start as he is 2-4 with a 3.27 GAA and a .906 save percentage. First overall pick Rasmus Dahlin scored his first goal in his NHL career in the same game. Casey Mittelstadt has only one assist in his first seven games but slow starts aren’t anything new for rookies. He has moved up to a line with Jeff Skinner and Kyle Okposo and that should help. Zach Bogosian made his seasonal debut on Tuesday. To make move for Bogosian on the roster, Buffalo sent Matt Tennyson to the minors.

Johnny Gaudreau missed the rest of Wednesday’s game after he was removed by a concussion spotter in the third period. The good news is that he did not suffer a concussion. He has three goals and nine points in six games to lead the Flames along with Matthew Tkachuk. Being a healthy scratch worked for Michael Frolik who had two goals in his first game back against the Bruins. Travis Hamonic is starting to skate again after suffering a facial fracture. Of course, he was wearing a non-contact jersey. Tkachuk is seeing some first line action alongside Gaudreau and Sean Monahan, as is Elias Lindholm. Keep an eye on Juuso Valiamaki who scored his first of the season on Wednesday. He was drafted 16th overall in 2017 and is quite a good rearguard.

Scott Darling (lower body) is close to returning to the lineup although he has not been given the green light just yet. He may have a tough time getting back his net as Curtis McElhinney has been stellar in winning all three starts with a 2.64 GAA and a so-so .900 save percentage. The Hurricanes sent first round pick from 2017, Martin Necas, to the minors. He had a goal and an assist in seven games but saw only 6:43 of action and needs to play a lot. The Flames also sent down their first-round pick from 2014, Haydn Fleury to the minors. The seventh overall pick was a healthy scratch in six of the Hurricanes first seven games before the decision was made to get him playing time. Sebastian Aho was the third star of the week with three goals and seven points in three games and has at least a point in all seven games this season with four goals and 12 points.

The Blackhawks play three games in four nights as part of a four-game week and they finally got Corey Crawford back from a concussion that kept him out of the lineup since December 23. He will likely play three times with Cam Ward getting one start. Crawford gave up three goals on 30 shots in his seasonal debut, losing to Arizona Thursday. While Ward has a good record this season (3-0-2) his peripherals of a 4.07 GAA and a .879 save percentage, are nothing to write home about. Jonathan Toews has a six-games point streak and is up to 10 points. Alex DeBrincat is tied for the team lead in points with Toews. Brandon Saad is having a bad start with only two assists in six games. He has yet to be a healthy scratch but that could happen soon.

Notes
The Avalanche end a five-game road trip in Philadelphia and also play four games this week including three games in four nights. Semyon Varlamov and Philipp Grubauer could split the net this week especially coming off a long road trip. Mikko Rantanen leads the Avs in points with 13 and the NHL in assists with 11. The top line of Rantanen, Nathan MacKinnon and Gabriel Landeskog have combined for 32 points in seven games as they continue to be one of the top three lines in the NHL. Sven Andrighetto played in his first game of the season Thursday as he has been out of the lineup with a lower-body injury. J.T. Compher is out with a concussion.

Seth Jones (knee) has been skating on his own this week and could return at some point this week as he was expected to miss four-six weeks and this will be week 4. Cam Atkinson has four goals and six points in six games and could get back to the 30-goal mark this season. Sergei Bobrovsky picked up the win Thursday by giving up three goals on 35 shots and it was a bit of a bounce back game for the Russian who gave up eight goals on 31 shots against the Lightning Saturday. Coach John Tortorella is pleased with the play of his third defense pairing Markus Nutivaara and Ryan Murray although neither player has much in the way of fantasy value.

Valeri Nichushkin will miss his second straight game Friday with an undisclosed injury. Consider him day-to-day. Blake Comeau saw some playing time with Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin but was back on the fourth line with Alexander Radulov returning to his role on the top unit. Radulov, Benn and John Klingberg each have four goals with Seguin scoring three times. Only three other Stars have even one and that includes Radek Faksa, Devin Shore and Connor Carrick. The Stars need a lot more scoring from their second, third and fourth lines. Jason Spezza has chipped in with four assists in six games but the Stars need some goal-scoring from him.

The Red Wings have been the worst team in the NHL this season as they are 0-5-2 this season. Anthony Mantha is already a minus-11 this season and after a 24-goal campaign in 2017-18, he has only one goal in seven games thus far. The Red Wings have given up 33 goals in the seven games although three have gone into the empty net. You know it has been a tough start when defenseman Nick Jensen is tied for second in goals on the team with two. They claimed Jacob De La Rose off waivers from Montreal earlier in the week. Mike Green skated on Thursday and while he is expected back at some point in November, the defenseman is coming towards the end of a virus that was attacking his liver. Evgeny Scechnikov is out five-six months after undergoing knee surgery.

The Oilers play four games this week including three games in four nights. Cam Talbot should get three starts with Mikko Koskinen. Koskinen has yet to get into a game as Talbot is 3-2 to start the season. Connor McDavid has been amazing this season (as well as every season) with points on 11 of Edmonton’s 13 goals. The Oilers need a better effort from Leon Draisaitl who was supposed to be the star of the second line. He has six points in five games which looks great but all four of his assists have come on the power with McDavid also garnering a point on each. He has only two even strength points (both goals) and that is not enough. Maybe he is coming around as he had the overtime goal Thursday.

The Panthers are off to a terrible start as they are 0-2-2. A lot of pundits had the Panthers as a playoff team, after they came oh-so-close last season and added Mike Hoffman in the off-season. Well Hoffman, who has had four-straight seasons with 22 or more goals with the Senators, was demoted to the fourth line on Thursday. He has been playing with Aleksander Barkov and Vincent Trocheck so this will be a huge drop down the depth chart. Mike Matheson will be back this week after a two-game suspension for his body slam on Elias Pettersson of the Canucks. He should have received more. Roberto Luongo was hurt on October 6 with an MCL injury and was expected to miss two-four weeks so it is possible he returns this week.

Jonathan Quick returned to action on Thursday after missing five games with a lower—body injury. Perhaps he should have missed a sixth contest as he gave up six goals on 29 shots before being pulled in a loss to the Islanders. The Kings have now lost three straight games and have moved their lines around as Ilya Kovalchuk has moved down to play alongside Michael Amadio and Jeff Carter while Tyler Toffoli took his spot on the top line with Anze Kopitar and Alex Iafallo. Tanner Pearson has struggled in the early going. He has not picked up a point in his last six games and was a minus-four Thursday. After not scoring on the power play for the first six games, the Kings were a perfect 2-for-2 Thursday.

Zach Parise has played very well this season and has a goal and six assists in six games to lead the Wild in points. He has not played well offensively in the last two seasons with only 34 goals and 66 points in 111 games. He is worth a pickup in a lot of leagues. Devan Dubnyk has been strong in net for the Wild as he is 2-1-2 with a 2.32 GAA and a .940 save percentage. Ryan Suter is off to a good start with a goal and five points. Nino Niederreiter has only one assist in six games. Matt Hendricks suffered a leg injury on Tuesday and hopes to miss only two-three weeks. Joel Eriksson Ek could return this week after missing a couple of games with an undisclosed injury.

Max Domi scored his first goal as a Montreal Canadien on Wednesday. Carey Price returned in the same game after missing two starts with flu-like symptoms and got the win, stopping 23-of-25 shots. Tomas Tatar continues to impress as a member of the Montreal Canadiens. He leads the team with eight points and is a plus-six after going minus-11 last season in 19 games as a Vegas Golden Knight. Noah Juulsen has only one assist in six games but is a plus-seven. Mike Reilly has the only goal from the blueline thus far although Jeff Petry does have five assists in six games. Brendan Gallagher leads with four goals. Nicolas Deslauriers practiced for the first time on Tuesday since suffering a facial fracture in the pre-season.

Kevin Fiala has yet to pick up a point through the first six games of the season. Only tough guy Zac Rinaldo can claim the same as a forward for the Predators. Nashville has been getting great goaltending from their duo of Pekka Rinne and Juuse Saros. Rinne is 3-1 with a 1.75 GAA and a .943 save percentage while Saros has won both of his starts, giving up five goals on 51 shots. Ryan Hartman has a goal and four points in six games this season but got off to a hot start last season as well as he had nine points in his first seven games with Chicago before getting only 18 in the next 50 games. He was then traded to Nashville. The Preds are getting scoring from almost everyone and that is the best way to keep winning.

The Devils finally lost their first of the season on Thursday, dropping a 5-3 decision to Colorado. Keith Kinkaid went to 4-1 as he been the only New Jersey goaltender this season with Cory Schneider still recovering from off-season hip surgery. Kinkaid has a 1.61 GAA and a .941 save percentage. Travis Zajac left the game with an apparent leg injury. His status is unknown at this time. Kyle Palmieri saw his goal streak of four games end in the game against Colorado but he still has seven goals and an assist in five contests. Jesper Bratt has apparently resumed skating after suffering a broken jaw a couple of weeks ago in practice. Nico Hischier scored his first of the season and has four points in five games.

The Islanders return home from a three-game stint in California to play Florida before hitting the road once again. Their off-season signing of Robin Lehner has worked out great so far as he is 2-1 with a 2.10 GAA and a .935 save percentage. He was pulled in the third period Thursday after taking a puck to the head. Valtteri Filppula has four goals and six points in six games and that is a huge surprise. He is second in points on the Islanders only to Mathew Barzal who has seven. Anthony Beauvillier has yet to get his name on the scoresheet in six games. The same goes for defenseman Thomas Hickey but he is a plus-seven. Tough guy Matt Martin has yet to pick up a penalty minute but has two goals in five games.

Henrik Lundqvist has been outstanding in the month of October for the first time in recent memory. He is only 2-3-1 but his 2.31 GAA and .930 save percentage have been outstanding in front of a leaky Rangers team. The Rangers sent backup goaltender Alexandar Georgiev to the minors to get him some playing time and recalled Marek Mazanec. Kevin Shattenkirk was supposed to lead the Rangers blueline offensively but he has only two helpers in six games. Chris Kreider leads the team in goals with four. The Rangers made Neal Pionk a healthy scratch in two straight games and he responded on Wednesday with three assists in return to action.

The Senators are off to a start no one would have predicted as they are 3-2-1 after most thought they would be at the bottom of the standings all season. Craig Anderson is 3-1-1 with a 3.02 GAA and a healthy .925 save percentage. The Senators received terrible news this week as Brady Tkachuk will be lost for a month with a leg injury. The rookie has three goals and six points in his first four games before the injury. Chris Tierney and defenseman Thomas Chabot lead the Senators in points with eight apiece. Matt Duchene has yet to score in six games but does have six assists. Rookie defenseman Maxime Lajoie has four goals and seven points in six games. He has come out of nowhere as he was a fifth round pick in 2016. He should be picked up in all leagues at this time.

The Flyers have been giving up a lot of goals, 31 in seven games, as Brian Elliott and Calvin Pickard have not been doing the job so the return of Michal Neuvirth could steal the net for Philadelphia. Their goalie of the future, Carter Hart, has given up seven goals in only 87:19 so he is not ready, but that is a very small sample size. Mikhail Vorobyev was a healthy scratch on Thursday as he was playing well in only half of his six games. It is hard to believe but Robert Hagg and Radko Gudas and not Shayne Gostisbehere and Ivan Provorov, lead the Flyers defense in points with five each. Claude Giroux has picked up where he left off last season with 10 points in seven games. Nolan Patrick should be back this week as he is currently out with an upper-body injury.

The Penguins went into Toronto and shut down the NHL’s best offense to the tune of 3-0 but the final two goals were into the empty net. Nevertheless, Matt Murray had a 38-save shutout and finally had a strong game in net. He is now 2-1 with a 3.65 GAA and a .893 save percentage. His stats were horrible heading into the Toronto game. Evgeni Malkin has three goals and 12 points in six games. Sidney Crosby has yet to score in six games but has five assists. Kris Letang is back! He has four goals and eight points in six games and is once again one of the premier defensemen in the NHL. Justin Schultz will miss the next four months with a fractured lower left leg that required surgery.

The Blues are 1-3-2 this season and no one on the roster is on the plus-side of the ledger as far as plus/minus is concerned. David Perron leads the team with four goals while Brayden Schenn leads the team with six points. Here is a rarity for you. The St. Louis defense has scored five goals this season but have only four assists. Alex Pietrangelo was supposed to be the offensive star of the defensive corps but has yet to pick up a point this season. I keep harping on Jake Allen but with good cause. He can obviously play well at times as he is an NHL goalie but the Blues cannot expect to do well with Allen as their undisputed number one goalie. He is 1-2-2 with a 3.91 GAA and a .877 save percentage.

The Sharks have yet to get a goal in seven games out of Brent Burns or Erik Karlsson although the duo do have 10 assists. No blueliner on the Sharks has yet to find the back of the net. Logan Couture had the hat trick on Thursday to give him four goals this season, tying him with Joe Pavelski and Evander Kane for the team lead. Martin Jones got off to a slow start this season but a 25 save game Thursday against the Sabres in which he gave up only one goal, knocked his GAA down to 2.63 while raising his save percentage to .896. Joe Thornton has a good chance at returning this week. He has been practicing as he was suffering from an infection in his knee. Pavelski became just the fifth player drafted 200th or later, to get 700 NHL points as he joined Dave Taylor, Henrik Zetterberg, Pavol Demitra and Steve Sullivan.

Andrei Vasilevskiy continues to be one of the best goaltenders in the NHL as he is 3-1 with a 1.48 GAA and a .954 save percentage. Ryan Callahan returned to the lineup for the first time this season on Thursday as he had been out with off-season shoulder surgery. It was thought that he would be out until sometime in November so he is back earlier than expected. The Lightning placed Cory Conacher on waivers and was sent to the minors after clearing Thursday. Nikita Kucherov is off to a slower start this season compared to last season as he has only four points in five games after getting eight last season in the first five contests. Yanni Gourde, Brayden Point and Tyler Johnson lead the Lightning with five points.

Auston Matthews leads the NHL in goals and points with 10 and 16 respectively. He had his seven-game points streak end Thursday in a shutout loss to Pittsburgh. Morgan Rielly was the second star of the week with a goal and seven points in three games. He leads all defensemen with 13 points. Nazem Kadri is still looking for his first goal of the season. Kasperi Kapanen has eight points in six games since moving up to the top line with Matthews. Ron Hainsey is having a nice fantasy season with two goals and four points as well as a plus-seven rating. Josh Leivo is the only Maple Leaf to get into a fight this season but don’t look for more as the Maple Leafs play the Jets twice this week. Matthews have four power play goals this season while John Tavares has two.

The Canucks play four games including three games in four nights so expect to see Anders Nilsson and Jacob Markstrom split the net. Nilsson picked up his first loss of the season Thursday, giving up four goals on 32 shots. He is 3-1 with a 2.26 GAA and a .925 save percentage. Jay Beagle will miss the next six weeks with a broken forearm. The Canucks will miss him at the faceoff dot. Elias Pettersson is out of action with a suspected concussion after he was body slammed by Mike Matheson of the Panthers, a misdeed that got Matheson a two-game suspension. The Canucks recalled Adam Gaudette from the minors. He is highly regarded and should be taken in deep leagues.

The Golden Knights are on a two-game winning streak that was helped by a late goal by Cody Eakin in Philadelphia that gave Vegas a 1-0 win. Eakin has three goals in four games this season. William Karlsson had 43 goals last season but it took until the seventh game of the season to get his first this year. Marc-Andre Fleury has given up only one goal on 53 shots in his last two games to go to 2-2 with a 2.70 GAA and a .896 save percentage. Tomas Hyka has been held off the scoresheet in three games this season but saw action on the second line with Max Pacioretty and Erik Haula Tuesday. Lars Eller was one of the stars of the Stanley Cup Final last season but is off to a slow start with only a goal and a minus-six rating in six games. The Capitals have been allowing plenty of goals with 22 going in, in only six games. Pheonix Copley allowed six on 36 shots in a loss to New Jersey in his only game played. Braden Holtby is better but with a 3.18 GAA and a .898 save percentage. He is 3-1-1 this season. Jason Megna was sent to the minors. Backstrom has only one goal this season with his eight assists.

The Jets play four games this week including three in four nights. Connor Hellebuyck should get the start in goal for three games with Laurent Brossoit getting one start. They also play Toronto for the only two times this season and if tempers flare, look for Dustin Byfuglien to add to his penalty minute count. Byfuglien set a Winnipeg record for most points by a defenseman with 336 as he had a goal and two assists Thursday to tie and beat Frederik Olausson’s record. Bryan Little has two goals and an assist in his last three games. Josh Morrissey has five assists this season and is tied for the team lead in points with Patrik Laine, Kyle Connor and Blake Wheeler. Ben Chiarot has 24 penalty minutes in seven games, two ahead of Tyler Myers.
