It’s the All-Star break heading into the beginning of February so there is not a lot of news over the last couple of days and the next few.

I thought I would go over the team scoring leaders this week and give some notes and thoughts.

Let’s get to it.

Now to The Week Ahead.

WEEK OF FEBRUARY 1-7

4 Games –Edmonton, Montreal, New York Islanders, Philadelphia, Washington

3 Games – Anaheim, Arizona,  Boston, Buffalo, Calgary, Carolina, Chicago, Colorado,  Columbus, Dallas, Detroit, Florida, Minnesota, Nashville, New Jersey, New York Rangers,  Ottawa, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, San Jose, Toronto, Winnipeg

2 Games - Los Angeles, Tampa Bay, Vancouver

Carolina, Chicago, Edmonton, Minnesota and San Jose play three games on the road.

Montreal, Nashville and Washington play three games at home.

INJURIES

Shawn Horcoff was suspended for 20 games for violating the performance enhancing substance program. (Click here to see the rest of the injury and suspended list.)

Note: A tired team is one that has played the day or night before and is going against a team that did not play the previous day or night. The reverse is true for a rested team.

ANAHEIM

Games this week

vs. San Jose, @ Los Angeles, vs. Arizona

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Ducks play three games in four nights so look for Frederik Andersen to get a start with John Gibson getting two. It appears that Cam Fowler could return to the lineup after the All-Star Game. He has been out for 14 games with a knee injury. Simon Despres returned to action on Tuesday after missing 42 games with a concussion. Shawn Horcoff was suspended 20 games for violating the league’s performance enhancing substance program. He will not be missed as far as fantasy pools are concerned. Patrick Maroon has two assists in his last four games. It sure beats his goal and four helpers in the first 38 games of the season. Corey Perry leads the Ducks with 33 points, two ahead of Ryan Getzlaf.

ARIZONA

Games this week

vs. Los Angeles, vs. Chicago, @ Anaheim

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Coyotes play three games in four nights so look for Louis Domingue to play twice with Anders Lindback getting a start. I loved Martin Hanzal at the start of the season and he played so well to begin the year but injuries have taken their toll (as they do every season) and he now has six goals and 23 points in 36 games after an assist Tuesday to break a seven game pointless drought. Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Mikkel Boedker lead the Coyotes in points with 34 while rookie Max Domi is right behind with 32. Domi doesn’t get a lot of consideration for the Calder being out in Phoenix but he definitely deserves plenty.

BOSTON

Games this week

vs. Toronto, @ Buffalo, vs. Buffalo

Rested Team: @ Buffalo (Thursday)

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Bruins play a home-and-home series against the Sabres this week so look for Zac Rinaldo or Brad Marchand to add to their penalty minute count if there are any fisticuffs. A lot of poolies wrote off Zdeno Chara this season because of three less than stellar seasons and at an advanced hockey age of 38. But the gigantic blueliner has surprised this season with seven goals and 27 points in 47 games with a plus-nine rating. Brad Marchand leads the Bruins with 20 goals while Patrice Bergeron leads with 44 points on 19 goals. David Pastrnak was sent to the minors during the All-Star break to get in some extra playing time. He should be back this week.

BUFFALO

Games this week

@ Montreal, vs. Boston, @ Boston

Rested Team: @ Montreal (Wednesday)

Tired Team:  vs. Boston (Thursday)

Notes

The Sabres play three games in four nights so look for Chad Johnson to get one start with Robin Lehner likely getting a pair. The Sabres play the Boston Bruins in a home-and-home series and expect to see Josh Gorges (if healthy) to add to his penalty minute count. The Sabres have to be thrilled by the play of Rasmus Ristolainen as the eighth overall pick in the 2013 Draft has been great offensively this season with eight goals and 31 points in 50 games. The blueliner his second on the Sabres in power play points with 14, three in arrears of Ryan O'Reilly. It looks like David Legwand’s career is on its final legs as he has only three goals and nine points in 47 games.

CALGARY

Games this week

vs. Carolina, vs. Columbus, @ Vancouver

Rested Team: vs. Columbus (Friday)

Tired Team: @ Vancouver (Saturday)

Notes

The Flames play three games in four nights and Karri Ramo is likely to get the net in two games with Jonas Hiller playing once. Dennis Wideman was suspended indefinitely Thursday as he knocked linesman Don Henderson to the ice on Wednesday. He will have a hearing after the All-Star Game and if the NHL deems the hit to be intentional, he will get a 10 game suspension. Johnny Gaudreau is having a tremendous sophomore season with 20 goals and 47 points in 48 games. The Flames selected a beauty with their fourth round pick in the 2011 Draft. Mark Giordano has been coming on strong of late with a goal and 10 points in his last 10 games. He has 11 goals and 31 points in 48 games this season.

CAROLINA

Games this week

@ Calgary, @ Winnipeg, @ Montreal

Rested Team: @ Montreal (Saturday)

Tired Team: None

Notes

Justin Faulk leads the Hurricanes with 33 points but the big surprise has to be that Kris Versteeg is in second, just two points behind. Don’t be surprised if the veteran, who is in the last year of his contract, is dealt at or near the deadline. Cam Ward was activated from the injured reserve list and missing less than two weeks of action. Eddie Lack has been coming on of late with four wins and a couple of losses in the Hurricanes last seven games. He has given up 12 goals over the stretch on 181 shots and has picked up a couple of shutouts. Don’t be surprised if he is the Hurricanes number one goalie next season.

CHICAGO

Games this week

@ Colorado, @ Arizona, @ Dallas

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

Jonathan Toews will miss the Colorado game as an illness is forcing him to miss the All-Star Game.  Corey Crawford has been terrific of late as he is 28-12-2 with a 2.14 GAA and a .931 save percentage.  Patrick Kane not only leads the Blackhawks in scoring but the entire NHL with 73 points. The big surprise this season for Chicago has been the play of rookie Artemi Panarin who has 17 goals and 46 points in 53 games. He is second on the team in scoring to Kane, 11 points ahead of Toews and it looks like the Blackhawks struck gold with the free agent.

COLORADO

Games this week

vs. Chicago, vs. Dallas, vs. Winnipeg

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: vs. Winnipeg (Saturday)

Notes

Alex Tanguay was a healthy scratch Wednesday which was a bit of a surprise since he was playing on the top line with Nathan MacKinnon and Matt Duchene. He has only three goals in 40 games this season but does have 16 assists. Duchene has 42 points and is one ahead of MacKinnon. Carl Soderberg is having a nice season with 10 goals and 36 points this season. The Avalanche did quite well in picking him up in June for a sixth round pick. Cody McLeod has been good for poolies in pools that use penalty minutes as a category. He has seven goals and 11 points with 96 penalty minutes. Semyon Varlamov has really come on of late and is now 19-12-3 with a 2.59 GAA and a .918 save percentage.

COLUMBUS

Games this week

@ Edmonton, @ Vancouver, @ Calgary

Rested Team: @ Calgary (Friday)

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Blue Jackets are in Western Canada this week and play three games in four nights. Sergei Bobrovsky and Curtis McElhinney are both still hurt so Joonas Korpisalo should get a couple of starts with Anton Forsberg getting the other if neither regular goalies are able to return. Brandon Saad leads the Blue Jackets in points with 35, one ahead of Scott Hartnell. Hartnell has been a stud in traditional fantasy pools with 85 penalty minutes to go with seven power play goals and nine points. Cam Atkinson has played quite well with 17 goals and 32 points in 50 games.

DALLAS

Games this week

@ Winnipeg, @ Colorado, vs. Chicago

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

John Klingberg has 40 points in 50 games which is outstanding for a defenseman but has only two assists in his last eight games. Jamie Benn leads the Stars in points with 58, five ahead of Tyler Seguin. Benn has been a dream for fantasy owners with 45 penalty minutes as well as 12 goals with the man-advantage and a plus-16 rating. The Stars have been getting great performances from their top two lines as Jason Spezza and Patrick Sharp have combined for 79 points including 33 goals. They have been getting solid goalkeeping from Kari Lehtonen but Antti Niemi, an off-season acquisition, has been stellar with an 18-9-5 mark to go with a 2.42 GAA and a .912 save percentage. His save percentage could use some help but that’s a lot of wins for a goaltender.

DETROIT

Games this week

@ Tampa Bay, @ Florida, vs. New York Islanders

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: @ Florida (Thursday)

Notes

The Red Wings play three games in four nights so it is likely that Petr Mrazek will play twice while Jimmy Howard will get one start. Mrazek has clearly outplayed Howard this season and should be the starter in Detroit for at least a few seasons. The Red Wings have not been getting a lot of scoring this season and rookie Dylan Larkin is tied for the team lead in points with 33, along with Henrik Zetterberg.  The Red Wings would be in big trouble without Larkin who also leads the team in goals with 15 and plus/minus with an NHL best plus-24, tied with Evgeny Kuznetsov and Tyler Toffoli. Brad Richards scored on Monday and broke a seven game pointless streak.

EDMONTON

 Games this week

vs. Columbus, @ Ottawa, @ Montreal, @ New York Islanders

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Oilers play four times this week including three in four nights so expect to see Anders Nilsson get one start for Cam Talbot who should play three times. This week should see the return of Connor McDavid to the Edmonton lineup after a three month absence due to a broken clavicle. Nail Yakupov should line up on one side. Taylor Hall leads the Oilers in all offensive categories including goals (18), assists (30) and points with 48. The Oilers claimed Adam Clendening off waivers from Anaheim and he will provide depth on the blueline but won’t be a fantasy asset. Zack Kassian was sent to the minors as the Oilers had nine days off and do not be surprised when he is recalled if he is on the same line as McDavid.

FLORIDA

Games this week

@ Washington, vs. Detroit, vs. Pittsburgh

Rested Team: vs. Detroit (Thursday), vs. Pittsburgh (Saturday)

Tired Team: None

Notes

The biggest surprise of the first half of the season has been the Florida Panthers as they are first in the Atlantic Division and second in the Eastern Conference standings. Jonathan Huberdeau leads the Panthers in points with 34, one ahead of the ageless wonder, Jaromir Jagr. Roberto Luongo will definitely get Vezina consideration as he has been one of the best in the NHL with a 22-13-4 record to go with a 2.08 GAA and a .930 save percentage. Brandon Pirri's name is being tossed around in trade rumors as he has nine goals and 21 points in 46 games after a 22 goal season last year in only 49 games. Aleksander Barkov inked a six-year contract extension worth $35.4 million.

LOS ANGELES

Games this week

@ Arizona, vs. Anaheim

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Kings only play twice this week so bench all your Los Angeles players with the exception of Anze Kopitar. Kopitar leads the Kings in points with 42 as he tries to lead LA for the ninth straight season in points. Kyle Clifford was sent to the minors on a conditioning stint after missing almost two months with an upper body injury. Vincent Lecavalier has four goals and five points in his last seven games and that has been good for the Kings secondary scoring. Tyler Toffoli is minus-three this season against the Arizona Coyotes but plus-27 against the rest of the NHL and is tied for the NHL lead at plus-24.

MINNESOTA

Games this week

@ New York Islanders, @ New York Rangers, @ St. Louis

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Wild play all three games on the road this week. Jonas Brodin had only three goals and 17 points last season (albeit with a plus-21 rating) but this season he has only a goal and six points with a minus-one rating. Mikael Granlund has only one goal in his last 30 games. He has only one point in his last 24 games so he is not a fantasy asset at all. Mikko Koivu leads the Wild with 35 points, four ahead of defenseman Ryan Suter.  Devan Dubnyk is on a five game winless streak. He is 18-15-5 this season after going 27-9-2 with the Wild last season after being acquired in January from Arizona.

MONTREAL

Games this week

@ Philadelphia, vs. Buffalo, vs. Edmonton, vs. Carolina

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: vs. Buffalo (Wednesday), vs. Carolina (Sunday)

Notes

It’s not good news on the Carey Price front as he is out another two-three weeks at least and the speculation is that the Canadiens could shut him down if they are not in the playoff race in a month. Montreal has been the worst team in the NHL since the beginning of December as they are 6-18-1. Should the Habs be in it, Tomas Plekanec’s name is being bandied about in trade rumors and there is a lot to like about the veteran who has nine goals and 34 points this season after a 26 goal, 60 point performance last season. P.K. Subban leads the Canadiens with 37 points, one ahead of Max Pacioretty.

 NASHVILLE

Games this week

vs. St. Louis, vs. Philadelphia, vs. San Jose

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

Ryan Johansen has the most points this season with 36 although most were attained with the Columbus Blue Jackets before he was dealt for Seth Jones. Defenseman Roman Josi is only one point behind Johansen. James Neal is going to the All-Star game as a replacement for Jonathan Toews. Pekka Rinne has been less than stellar this season especially on the road as he is only 19-15-7 with a 2.47 GAA and a .906 save percentage. He was unbelievable last season as he finished second in the Vezina race behind only Carey Price. Rinne was 41-17-6 with a 2.18 GAA and a .923 save percentage so you can see the huge swing in his stats.

NEW JERSEY

Games this week

vs. New York Rangers, @ Toronto, vs. Washington

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

Despite missing eight games due to injuries, Mike Cammalleri leads the Devils in points with 38, two ahead of the surprising Lee Stempniak and three up on Kyle Palmieri who they picked up from Anaheim in the off-season. There is no timetable for the return of Patrik Elias who had arthroscopic knee surgery a couple of weeks ago. It’s been a tough season for Elias who has played in only 13 games thus far. Cory Schneider has been amazing for New Jersey this season as he has kept the Devils in the hunt for a playoff spot. Schneider is 22-15-5 with a sparkling 2.03 GAA and a .929 save percentage.

NEW YORK ISLANDERS

Games this week

vs. Minnesota, @ Washington, @ Detroit, vs. Edmonton

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Islanders play four times this week, including three games in four nights so look for Jaroslav Halak and Thomas Greiss to share the net. John Tavares is not having a good fantasy season as he has only 16 goals and 34 points, one point behind Kyle Okposo for the team lead. Tavares finished second in NHL scoring last season, one point behind Jamie Benn but this season he is currently tied for 57thBrock Nelson has six goals in his last seven games to give him 19 this season, one off his career high. I’m looking for Ryan Strome to have a good last two months of the season after he started off slow.

NEW YORK RANGERS

Games this week

@ New Jersey, vs. Minnesota, @ Philadelphia

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

Derick Brassard had a career night on Monday with five points in a 6-3 win over Buffalo. He took over the team scoring lead as he is now one point ahead of Mats Zuccarello. Dan Boyle had been playing well of late but he was a healthy scratch against the Sabres. He was likely rested as he is 39 and had played the previous night. Rick Nash missed Monday’s game with a knee injury but should return for the New Jersey game as the MRI turned out to be negative. Keith Yandle’s name has been heard in trade rumors and he has responded with three points in his last four games to give him three goals and 26 points this season. He is a power play specialist but sees third unit duty five-on-five.

OTTAWA

Games this week

@ Pittsburgh, vs. Edmonton, vs. Toronto

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

Defenseman Erik Karlsson leads the way for the Senators as he has 52 points, nine ahead of the top forward Bobby Ryan. Mark Stone has been a bit of a disappointment to many as he has only 33 points and a minus-17 rating. He was drafted fairly highly this season after a 26 goal, 64 point performance last year. Mika Zibanejad is on a six game scoring streak and has seven points during the streak. Dave Cameron ripped his players heading into the All-Star break as the Senators are 8-13-1 since December 10 and while they are only three points out of a playoff spot, they have to jump over four teams. Kyle Turris hopes to return from a lower body injury that has kept him out since January 18.

PHILADELPHIA

Games this week

vs. Montreal, @ Nashville, vs. New York Rangers, @ Washington

Rested Team: None

Tired Team:  None

Notes

The Flyers play four games this week as well as three games in four nights, so look for Steve Mason (if healthy) to play three games with Michal Neuvirth playing once. Mason picked up a lower body injury but with the All-Star break, he is hoping to be healthy for the Montreal game on Tuesday. Claude Giroux leads the Flyers with 39 points and the suddenly hot Jakub Voracek is only three points in arrears. Voracek has four goals and 10 points in his last 10 games, reminiscent of last season when he was tied for fourth overall in NHL scoring. The big surprise this season has been the play of rookie Shayne Gostisbehere who has taken over as the quarterback on the Flyers power play.

PITTSBURGH

Games this week

vs. Ottawa, @ Tampa Bay, @ Florida

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: @ Florida (Saturday)

Notes

Evgeni Malkin leads the Penguins in scoring with 47 points, six ahead of Sidney Crosby. What has been amazing is that Malkin has yet to miss a game after last playing over 70 games in the 2011-12 season. Phil Kessel has been a major disappointment as he has only 15 goals and 31 points thus far. He has come on a bit of late with three goals and six assists in his last nine games. Patric Hornqvist has also been a disappointment with only 10 goals and 26 points this season. Sergei Plotnikov was a big sleeper in many pools this season but he has been sleeping all season with only two assists in 32 games this year.

ST. LOUIS

Games this week

@ Nashville, vs. San Jose, vs. Minnesota

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

Brian Elliot has been great for the Blues since Jake Allen was injured and he was the third star of the week with a 2-1-1 record to go with a 1.48 GAA and a .955 save percentage. Jaden Schwartz should return to the Blues lineup shortly after the All-Star break as he has been out of action with a broken ankle and subsequent surgery since October 20. The talented forward had 28 goals and 63 points in 75 games last season and the Blues really miss him. Vladimir Tarasenko leads the Blues with 46 points, four ahead of Alexander Steen.

SAN JOSE

Games this week

@ Anaheim, @ St. Louis, @ Nashville

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Sharks are on the road for all three this week. Joe Pavelski leads the Sharks with 25 goals and 49 points, six ahead of defenseman Brent Burns. Pavelski has 20 power play points and is one up on Burns. Joe Thornton has been very hot of late with five goals and 24 points in his last 19 games. He used to be a point plus a game player but the last time that happened was 2009-10 when he had 89 points in 79 games. He became the 33rd NHLer to reach the 1.300 point mark on Tuesday. Tomas Hertl has also come on of late with six goals and 11 points in his last 10 games. His plus-12 rating over the same stretch, has been great.

TAMPA BAY

Games this week

vs. Detroit, vs. Pittsburgh

Rested team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

Andrei Vasilevskiy has started in four of the Lightning’s last eight games and while he has given up 10 goals he has won all four while making 123 saves. He is worth looking at, especially in keeper leagues. Look for Tyler Johnson to do better after the All-Star break as he is finally getting healthy. Johnson feels his speed is coming back and while he has only five goals and 16 points in 36 games, he was great last season with 29 goals and 72 points in 77 games to go with a plus-33 rating. The Steven Stamkos saga continues as he is scheduled to be a UFA at the end of the season. The Lightning offered him a big contract extension recently (reportedly eight years/$68 million) but there has been no word on whether or not he will sign.

TORONTO

Games this week

@ Boston, vs. New Jersey, @ Ottawa

Rested team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Maple Leafs are having a tough go of it lately as they have won only one game in their last 10 (1-7-2). Leo Komarov is leading the team with 16 goals and 31 points and if you thought that would happen at the start of the season then perhaps you are a psychic. Tyler Bozak is having a nice season with nine goals and 29 points with a plus-one rating after being a bottom-five NHLer last season at minus-34. Jonathan Bernier has started only two of the Leafs last eight games and while he lost both, he has given up only four goals on 74 shots. William Nylander, Toronto’s first round pick in 2014 and eighth overall, is practicing after suffering a concussion during the World U20 Championships. He was leading the AHL in scoring before being sent over to Finland for the Worlds. He is a good one.

VANCOUVER

Games this week

vs. Columbus, vs. Calgary

Rested Team: vs. Calgary (Saturday)

Tired Team None

Notes

The Canucks play only twice this week so rest all your Vancouver players in weekly transaction pools with the possible exception of the Sedin twins. Henrik Sedin was out before the break with an undisclosed injury but should be back by the Columbus game. Daniel Sedin leads the team with 44 points, seven ahead of Henrik. Bo Horvat has been playing well offensively of late with six goals and 11 points in his last 10 games but his minus-24 rating really hurts his fantasy value if you play that start. Even in his last 10 games, he is a minus-five. Jacob Markstrom has outplayed Ryan Miller as Markstrom is 8-5-4 with a 2.38 GAA and a .923 save percentage while Miller is 11-14-7/2.71/.913.

WASHINGTON

Games this week

vs. Florida, @ New York Islanders, @ New Jersey, vs. Philadelphia

Rested team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Capitals play three times in four nights as part of a four game week so expect to see Philipp Grubauer play once with Braden Holtby playing three games. Alex Ovechkin has bowed out of the All-Star Game and that will cause him to miss the Florida game on Tuesday as per NHL rules. The removal of Ovechkin will allow teammate Evgeny Kuznetsov to partake in the game. Kuznetsov leads the Capitals in points with 49, four ahead of Nicklas Backstrom and seven up on Ovechkin. Tom Wilson has 111 penalty minutes and when you add the four goals and 15 points, that is nice production from someone who was drafted late, if at all.

WINNIPEG

Games this week

vs. Dallas, vs. Carolina, @ Colorado

Rested team: None

Tired Team: @ Colorado (Saturday)

Notes

It was nice to see rookie Nikolaj Ehlers break out before the All-Star break with a hat trick against Arizona and he is now coming on with a four game point streak and six goals and eight points in his last seven contests. Blake Wheeler leads the Jets with 48 points in 49 games, well ahead of Bryan Little who is second with 38 points.  Ondrej Pavelec has been practicing with the Jets as he has been out of action for well over a month and is close to returning. That is not good news for Michael Hutchinson as the Jets have to keep Connor Hellebuyck who has been sensational for the Winnipeggers as he is 12-9-1 this season since his recall, with a 2.10 GAA and a .927 save percentage.
