Patrick Kane leads in SOG

by Michael Finewax
Updated On: November 13, 2018, 9:17 am ET

A month into the season, there are only 10 players in the NHL with more than 50 shots on goal, including league-leader Patrick Kane with 64. He is followed by Tyler Seguin with 60 as the two are the only players with at least five dozen shots on goal.

The rest of the top-10 are:

Jonathan Marchessault – 59

David Pastrnak - 56

Nathan MacKinnon – 56

Evander Kane – 55

Mika Zibanejad – 54

Jack Eichel – 54

Dougie Hamilton – 52

Patrik Laine – 51

Only one defenseman, Hamilton, is on the list. You would expect Brent Burns to be here but he has only, tied for sixth among defensemen with rookie Chicago blueliner Henri Jokiharju.

As an aside, three players have scored on their only shots on goal, Darren Archibald, Jacob MacDonald and Brendan Gaunce. Two of the three are with Vancouver.

3 Games – Anaheim, Calgary, Columbus, Detroit, Florida, Los Angeles, New York Islanders, New York Rangers, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Tampa Bay, Toronto, Vancouver,

2 Games - Buffalo, Carolina, Chicago, Nashville, Winnipeg

Boston and Washington play all four games at home.

Edmonton, Minnesota, New Jersey and Vegas play all four games on the road.

Arizona, Calgary, Colorado and Vancouver play three games on the road.

Florida, Los Angeles, St. Louis and Tampa Bay play three games at home.

INJURIES

Jonathan Quick is out indefinitely after undergoing knee surgery. (Click here to see the rest of the injury list.)

Note: A tired team is one that has played the day or night before and is going against a team that did not play the previous day or night. The reverse is true for a rested team.

ANAHEIM

Games this week

@ Los Angeles, vs. Calgary, vs. Minnesota

Rested Team: vs. Minnesota (Friday)

Tired Team: vs. Calgary (Wednesday)

Notes

The Ducks play three games in four nights so expect to see Ryan Miller play once while number one goaltender John Gibson will play twice. Anaheim had a team meeting Tuesday after losing their sixth in a row. Ben Street was sent to the minors Thursday after clearing waivers. He was a nice story at the beginning of the season when he scored his first NHL goal at the age of 31. Patrick Eaves (shoulder) is close to returning and skated at practice with Adam Henrique and Isac Lundestrom. He has played in only two games since the start of the 2017-18 season. One bright spot of late has been the offense of Pontus Aberg who had four goals in two games earlier in the week.

ARIZONA

Games this week

vs. Philadelphia, @ Philadelphia, @ Pittsburgh, @ Washington

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: @ Washington (Sunday)

Notes

The Coyotes play four games this week including three games in four nights. Antti Raanta should get the call in net for three contests with Darcy Kuemper playing once.  They play a home-and-home series against the Flyers so look for Lawson Crouse to pick up some penalty minutes if tempers flare. After scoring only two goals in their first five games, the Coyotes have 22 in their last six contests. Alex Galchenyuk has been strong since his return from injury as he has a goal and four points in four games with a plus-four rating. Heading into action on Thursday, the Coyotes have scored more shorthanded goals (six) than on the power play (four). It has been a big turnaround this season from Oliver Ekman-Larsson who was a combined minus-53 in the last two seasons and is a plus-five in 11 games this year.

BOSTON

Games this week

vs. Dallas, vs. Vancouver, vs. Toronto, vs. Vegas

Rested Team: vs. Toronto (Saturday)

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Bruins play all four games at home this week including three games in four nights. Tuukka Rask should get the call in three games while Jaroslav Halak should play once but Halak has been strong this season so it could be a split of the net.  A lot of people had Ryan Donato winning the Calder Trophy this season, especially after he had such a good end to the season as he inked a deal with the Bruins after finishing his career with Harvard. He had five goals and nine points in only 12 NHL games but this season has been different with only one goal in 11 games. He will try and get his game back in Providence as he was sent to the AHL. Defenseman Matthew Grzelcyk is leading the Bruins in power play time on ice but that should change with the return of Torey Krug.

BUFFALO

Games this week

@ Montreal, vs. Vancouver

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Sabres moved Remi Elie up to the second line with Casey Mittelstadt and Sam Reinhart in time for Thursday’s game against the Senators. He had a shot on goal but still has no points in four games. Jason Pominville played in his 1,000th NHL career game on Thursday and celebrated with his sixth goal of the season. He is on a six-game scoring streak. Jack Eichel has nine points in his last six games. He leads the Sabres with 14 points in 13 games while Jeff Skinner is one point back. It’s a surprise to see Jake McCabe leading the Buffalo blueline in points, ahead of Rasmus Ristolainen and Rasmus Dahlin.  On the same team, Skinner is a plus-10 this season while Ristolainen is a minus-11.

CALGARY

Games this week

@ Anaheim, @ Los Angeles, @ San Jose

Rested Team: @ Anaheim (Wednesday)

Tired Team: @ San Jose (Sunday)

Notes

The Flames play three games in California this week. They have not been happy with the production or lack thereof from James Neal as he has just two goals and three points in 14 games. David Rittich has outplayed Mike Smith in the early going and I wouldn’t be surprised if the duo split the net in the near future if things don’t change. Smith is 5-4-1 this season with a 3.71 GAA and a .871 save percentage while Rittich is 3-1 with a sparkling 2.08 GAA and a .939 save percentage. Johnny Gaudreau continues to lead the Flames with 17 points and has played quite well with Sean Monahan and Elias Lindholm. The trio have 47 points. Matthew Tkachuk also has 17 points this season. Mark Giordano is off to a very good start with two goals and 14 points in 14 contests.

CAROLINA

Games this week

@ Chicago, vs. Detroit

Rested Team: vs. Detroit (Saturday)

Tired Team: None

Notes

Sebastian Aho leads the Hurricanes with 17 points in 12 games and GM Don Waddell is currently trying to negotiate a long-term deal with the budding star.  He has points in every game this season. Scott Darling made his seasonal debut against the Bruins Tuesday and gave up three goals on 31 shots. Petr Mrazek has been strong in goal for the Hurricanes and is 3-3-1 this season with a 2.58 GAA. His save percentage is weak at .887 however.  Micheal Ferland leads the Hurricanes with seven goals and he is tied for second with 11 points. Ferland, Aho and Teuvo Teravainen have combined for 39 points in 12 games as well as a plus-29 rating.

CHICAGO

Games this week

vs. Carolina, @ Philadelphia

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

Jonathan Toews has 12 points in 14 games this season but has only two points in his last five games. Perhaps the time to sell at a high point has gone by. Patrick Kane returned to action on Thursday after missing Wednesday’s game with an illness. He continues to lead the Blackhawks in points with 18 points in 13 games. Duncan Keith has only two goals since the start of the 2017-18 season with a big fat zero this season in 14 games. Artem Anisimov was a power play specialist last season with 11 of his 20 goals coming with the man-advantage. He has scored only twice in 14 games this season without scoring on the power play.

COLORADO

Games this week

@ St. Louis, vs. Nashville, @ Winnipeg, @ Edmonton

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: vs. Nashville (Wednesday)

Notes

The Avalanche play three games in four nights as part of a four-game week. Semyon Varlamov will likely get the call three times this week with Philipp Grubauer playing once. Mikko Rantanen was the first star for the month of October in the NHL as he had five goals and 21 points in 12 games with a plus-14 rating. November did not get off to a good start as he was a minus-three without a point in a 6-5 loss to Calgary Thursday. The Avs moved Vladislav Kamenev up to the third line with Colin Wilson and Alexander Kerfoot Thursday and he responded with his first goal of the season. Colorado called up Sheldon Dries from the minors and he scored once and added an assist in the loss to Calgary.

COLUMBUS

Games this week

vs. Dallas, @ Washington, vs. New York Rangers

Rested Team: vs. Dallas (Tuesday)

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Blue Jackets play three games in four nights so look for Sergei Bobrovsky to get the call twice with Joonas Korpisalo starting once. Bobrovsky had a rough month of October (2-5-0 with a 3.58 GAA and a .882 save percentage) but was stellar Thursday as the calendar turned to November as he stopped 44-of-45 shots in a win over San Jose. Brandon Dubinsky has been practicing with the Blue Jackets but is not ready to return from a torn oblique injury. Pierre-Luc Dubois, the Jackets first pick and third overall in 2016, leads Columbus with 18 penalty minutes. He has contributed offensively as well with four goals and eight points in 12 games. Seth Jones has two goals in five games since returning from his pre-season knee injury.

DALLAS

Games this week

@ Boston, @ Columbus, vs. San Jose, vs. Nashville

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: @ Columbus (Tuesday)

Notes

The Stars finish a five-game road trip and play four games this week with three coming in four nights. Backup Anton Khudobin will play once and possibly twice while starter Ben Bishop will get the other two or three starts. Alexander Radulov continues to sit as he has missed five of the last six games with a lower body injury. He played on Tuesday but was back on the shelf Thursday. Jason Spezza played in his 1,000th NHL game Tuesday. He is coming off a horrible 2017-18 season when he had only eight goals and 26 points in 78 games. This season has been different with two goals and eight points in 12 contests. Jamie Benn has a point in each of his last two games after going six games without a point.

DETROIT

Games this week

vs. Vancouver, vs. New York Rangers, @ Carolina

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: @ Carolina (Saturday)

Notes

Michael Rasmussen has scored in each of his last two games and may be adapting to the NHL. Thomas Vanek will miss the next three-six weeks with a lower body injury after taking a hit in the first period Tuesday. Dylan Larkin is hot of late with seven points in his last three games as the Red Wings are starting to win. He is up to 14 points in 13 games. Tyler Bertuzzi is having a nice season with four goals and seven points in 13 games as well as a team-leading 19 penalty minutes. Jimmy Howard has won two straight and is now 3-5-2 with a 3.06 GAA and a .912 save percentage. Mike Green has three assists in four games thus far but watch Dennis Cholowski  as the rookie defenseman has two goals and eight points in 11 games.

EDMONTON

@ Washington, @ Tampa Bay, @ Florida, vs. Colorado

Tired Team: @ Tampa Bay (Tuesday)

Notes

The Oilers are off to a great start this season at 6-4-1. They play three games in four nights as part of a four-game week so expect to see Cam Talbot play three games with Mikko Koskinen playing once. Koskinen was sensational Thursday as he stopped all 40 shots against the Blackhawks. He is 2-0-0 with a 1.51 GAA and a .955 save percentage as a stellar backup to Cam Talbot this season. Ryan Strome is pointless in 12 games this season and GM Peter Chiarelli must be regretting the trade that sent Jordan Eberle to the Islanders in exchange for Strome. Jesse Puljujarvi returned to the Oilers lineup Thursday after being a healthy scratch in his previous four games. Ty Rattie is back practicing with Connor McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and is close to returning from a middle body injury.

Notes

The Panthers return to North America after playing a pair of games against Winnipeg in Helsinki, Finland and play three times in four nights, all at home. James Reimer and Roberto Luongo will each get one game in net and depending on the health of Luongo who is coming off a knee injury, the third game is up for grabs. Evgenii Dadonov is on a seven-game points streak and leads the Panthers with 11 points in 10 games, one ahead of defenseman Keith Yandle. Vincent Trocheck has three goals and eight points this season and leads the Panthers forwards with 16 penalty minutes, two behind defenseman Alex Petrovic. Aaron Ekblad is off to a slow start with only two assists in 10 games.

Notes

The Kings received horrible news this week as goaltender Jonathan Quick underwent knee surgery and will be gone for the next three-six weeks. Slava Voynov has applied to be reinstated into the NHL and while the Kings still hold his NHL rights, they have not decided if they want him back. He last played in the NHL in 2014 and pleaded no contest to a charge of corporal injury to a spouse.  Kyle Clifford leads the Kings with 23 penalty minutes. Dion Phaneuf has yet to pick up a point in 12 games while Tanner Pearson has only one assist in 12 games. The Kings are having problems all over the ice and have only 24 goals in 12 games. Adrian Kempe was slated to be a bigger part of the offense after scoring 16 goals and 21 assists last season but has only a goal and an assist thus far this season.

MINNESOTA

Games this week

@ San Jose, @ Los Angeles, @ Anaheim, @ St. Louis

Rested Team: None

Tired Team:  @ Anaheim (Friday)

Notes

The Wild complete a seven-game road trip with four games this week including three in four nights. Devan Dubnyk has been strong in goal this season and will get the call three times with Alex Stalock seeing the crease once. Dubnyk is 5-2-2 with a 2.19 GAA and a .937 save percentage. Jordan Greenway scored his first NHL goal of his career Monday against the Vancouver Canucks in his first game after his recall from the minors. Ryan Suter is off to a strong start with 12 points in 12 games and he is tied for the team lead in points with Zach Parise and Mikael Granlund. Granlund is on a nine-game points streak after not picking up a point in any of his first three games.

MONTREAL

Tired Team: @ New York Rangers (Tuesday)

Notes

Les Canadiens continue to play great and have a big four-game week which includes three games in four nights. Carey Price has regained his form of previous seasons and will play three games with Antti Niemi playing once. He is 5-2-2 this season with a 2.43 GAA and a .910 save percentage. Jesperi Kotkaniemi finally scored his first NHL goal in his 12th NHL game Thursday and enjoyed it so much, he scored again. Brendan Gallagher leads the Canadiens with nine goals but Max Domi is the points leader with 12, one up on Tomas Tatar and two up on Gallagher. Paul Byron is day-to-day with a lower body injury. Andrew Shaw returned to the Montreal lineup Thursday after sitting a couple of games as a healthy scratch. He has one goal and two points in eight games with 16 penalty minutes.

 NASHVILLE

@ Colorado, @ Dallas

Rested Team: @ Colorado (Wednesday)

Notes

Two seasons ago, Filip Forsberg only scored twice in his first 28 games and still ended up with 31 goals on the season. This year, he has 10 in his first 13 games and you have to be wondering if 40 or possibly even 50 are in the cards for him. Pekka Rinne returned from an undisclosed injury after missing five games and stopped 42-of-43 Tampa Bay shots in a win Thursday night.  Kyle Turris has 11 points this season as he has settled into his role with the Predators after a trade from Ottawa a year ago. Viktor Arvidsson is day-to-day with a lower body injury.  Kevin Fiala is the only regular Predator to be a minus player as he is a minus-three. Zac Rinaldo has a goal in 12 games this season with a team-leading 15 penalty minutes.

NEW JERSEY

Games this week

@ Pittsburgh, @ Ottawa, @ Toronto, @ Winnipeg

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: @Ottawa (Tuesday)

Notes

The Devils complete a seven-game road trip this week by playing four away from home with three games in four nights. Look for Cory Schneider and Keith Kinkaid to split the net. The Devils got off to a great start this season but have given up 12 goals in their last two games including Schneider’s first start of the season as he gave up four goals in a loss to lowly Detroit. Jesper Bratt has joined the Devils on their seven-game road trip. He has yet to play this season after suffering a broken jaw just before the start of the season. Kyle Palmieri has nine goals in 10 games this season as well as a team-leading 14 points. Sophomore Nico Hischier has 10 points in 10 games as the second-year player has not regressed in the least.

NEW YORK ISLANDERS

Games this week

vs. Montreal, @ Tampa Bay, @ Florida

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

Mathew Barzal scored 22 times last season in his rookie campaign and added 63 assists to win the Calder Trophy. It has been more of the same this year as Barzal has only a goal but 11 helpers in 12 games. The Islanders were expected to be bottom-dwellers with the loss of John Tavares to free agency but they have been getting great goaltending from Robin Lehner and Thomas Greiss. Lehner is 4-2-1 with a 2.45 GAA and a .928 save percentage while Greiss is 3-2-0 with a 2.18 GAA and a .934 save percentage. Lehner is day-to-day with a strain, forcing the Islanders to recall Christopher Gibson from the minors. Tom Kuhnhackl was sent to the minors Wednesday.

NEW YORK RANGERS

Games this week

vs. Montreal, @ Detroit, @ Columbus

Rested Team: vs. Montreal (Tuesday)

Tired Team: None

 Notes

The Rangers improved to 5-7-1 this season with a pair of wins over San Jose and Anaheim on the West Coast. Henrik Lundqvist does not want to be traded despite the Rangers obvious rebuild and his veteran presence will be important for the Rangers in the future. Filip Chytil has yet to score in 13 games and he has only three assists. A trip to the minors could be in the cards as he could use extra ice time. Pavel Buchnevich was a healthy scratch Thursday for the third time this season. He has five points in 10 games including three goals. Tony DeAngelo is pointless in his last two games as he has replaced the injured Adam McQuaid in the Rangers lineup, but still has four points in five games this season.

OTTAWA

Games this week

vs. New Jersey, vs. Vegas, @ Tampa Bay, @ Florida

Rested Team: vs. New Jersey (Tuesday)

Notes

The Senators play four games this week including three games in four nights. Craig Anderson should get the start in goal on three occasions with Mike McKenna getting one start if Mike Condon remains in the minors. Anderson was terrific in a 4-2 win over Buffalo Thursday as he stopped 46 shots. Thomas Chabot continues to play amazingly well on offense as the defenseman has 15 points in 12 games thus far. He would not be getting this opportunity if Erik Karlsson was still an Ottawa Senator. Speedy Alex Formenton scored his first NHL goal Tuesday. Mark Borowiecki will be back this week after being suspended for three games for an illegal check on Vegas’ Cody Eakin.  Zack Smith underwent facial surgery Sunday and will be able to start some physical activity this week.

PHILADELPHIA

Notes

The Flyers play a home-and-home series against Arizona this week. Look for Wayne Simmonds to add to his team-leading penalty minute total of 20 if there are any fisticuffs in either game. The Flyers have given up 50 goals including three empty netters, in only 13 games on 371 shots. That is not good. The team save percentage is only .865, about 50 points below just average. Corban Knight had a great training camp but he is out four months after undergoing surgery to repair a dislocated collarbone. Don’t be surprised if defenseman Philippe Myers and/or center German Rubtsov are up with the Flyers soon. James van Riemsdyk has started to skate again. He was injured on October 6 and was given a five-six-week recovery period at that time so he could be back the following week.

PITTSBURGH

Games this week

Notes

Evgeni Malkin scored on Thursday to give him 20 points in just 11 games. I would say to temper your enthusiasm as he likely will get hurt and miss 15 games, but that did not happen last season and he ended up with 98 points in 78 games. Sidney Crosby saw his five-game points streak end on Thursday but he did have six goals and 10 points in the streak. Casey DeSmith actually has better stats than Matt Murray (2-0-2 with a 2.22 GAA and a .932 save percentage compared to Murray’s 4-2-1 mark with a 3.45 GAA and a .897 save percentage) but the Penguins will continue to roll with Murray as their number one goaltender. Derick Brassard has missed the last three games with a lower-body injury.

Games this week

vs. Colorado, vs. San Jose, vs. Minnesota

Rested Team: vs. San Jose (Friday)

Notes

Robby Fabbri picked up his first point in the NHL since February 2, 2017 when he had an assist in a game against Toronto, as he returned to the lineup for the first time since February 4, 2017. It has been a tough haul for Fabbri who blew out his ACL in 2017 and then missed the entire 2017-18 season after re-injuring his left knee. This season the problem has been a groin injury. Fabbri should be considered in most pools at this time. Alex Pietrangelo has four points in 11 games and that includes a huge game on October 27 when he had a goal and two assists against the Blackhawks. Ryan O'Reilly leads the Blues with 15 points, five better than David Perron and Vladimir Tarasenko.

SAN JOSE

Games this week

vs. Minnesota, @ Dallas, @ St. Louis, vs. Calgary

Rested Team: vs. Calgary (Sunday)

Notes

The Sharks play four games this week including three games in four nights. Martin Jones is expected to play three games with Aaron Dell playing once. The Sharks got Joe Thornton back this past week and that doesn’t hurt. Erik Karlsson continues to struggle in San Jose as he has only seven assists in 13 games with a minus-10 rating, the worst on the team. Logan Couture has an eight-game scoring streak and is tied for the team lead in points with 15. Brent Burns also has 15 points. Timo Meier saw his nine-game points streak end on Thursday. Joe Pavelski has yet to draw an assist in 13 games.  Evander Kane has four goals and 10 points in 13 games with a team-leading 25 penalty minutes.

TAMPA BAY

Games this week

vs. Edmonton, vs. New York Islanders, vs. Ottawa

Notes

The Lightning had an offensive explosion Tuesday as they scored eight times on the New Jersey Devils. Ryan McDonagh picked up his first of the season in the game as well as a couple of helpers. Ondrej Palat and Victor Hedman are out with injuries but could return this week. Mikhail Sergachev was a horrible minus-six Saturday in Arizona but still is a plus-one thus far.  He has been suffering offensively with only four assists in 12 games. With Hedman out of action, Braydon Coburn scored twice Tuesday. It was his first multi-goal game since 2009. Yanni Gourde has four goals and 12 points in 12 games. Brayden Point has been just a little bit better with seven goals and 14 points.

Notes

The Maple Leafs had a big blow this past week when Auston Matthews suffered a shoulder injury that is expected to keep him out of the lineup for at least four weeks. There is still no word as far as contract negotiations are concerned with RFA William Nylander. You have to wonder if he has a KHL deal in his back pocket if he so wishes. Andreas Johnsson has been a disappointment this season with only one assist in eight games.  Patrick Marleau is terrific in the locker room but he has only two goals and six points in 13 contests. Travis Dermott returned to the lineup Thursday after missing three games with an illness and Ron Hainsey played in his 1,000th NHL game Thursday.  With the injury to Matthews, Nazem Kadri moved up and is a top-two center.

Notes

It sure was nice getting Elias Pettersson and Brock Boeser back this week and the duo were on display Monday with Pettersson scoring twice and Boeser picking up an assist. Pettersson was named the rookie of the month for October and it was richly deserved as he had seven goals and 10 points in eight games. Fellow rookie Adam Gaudette has only one assist in eight games but he should start getting comfortable in the NHL shortly. The Canucks have a wealth of young talent and the fans just need to be patient. They should be very good in the years to come.  Anders Nilsson is out with a fractured finger. Jake Virtanen had a pair of goals Wednesday for the first time in his NHL career. Brandon Sutter is out with a shoulder injury.

Notes

The Golden Knights play four games on the road this week and that includes three games in four nights. Marc-Andre Fleury will get three starts with Malcolm Subban starting once. After a horrible start, Fleury has been outstanding of late and has lowered his GAA to 2.74 in 11 starts. William Karlsson has only three goals in 12 games after 43 last season. Many pundits thought that Max Pacioretty just needed to get out of Montreal and the puck would start going in again. But that hasn’t happened and he has only two goals with nary an assist in 10 games. He has missed the last four games with an upper body injury. Cody Eakin was back in action Tuesday after missing most of Sunday’s action against Ottawa as he took an illegal check from Mark Borowiecki, an offense that cost the Ottawa defenseman a three game suspension.

Notes

The Capitals play all four games at home this week with a night off between all games. Pheonix Copley should get a start this week as the Capitals netminding has been mediocre at best this season.  Noltby is 4-3-1 this season but his peripherals are bad with a 3.60 GAA and a .887 save percentage. Jakub Vrana has seen some time on the top line with Alex Ovechkin and Evgeny Kuzenetsov. Travis Boyd has been medically cleared to play from a foot injury suffered in the pre-season but will be sent to the AHL on a conditioning stint. Nicklas Backstrom has two goals and 13 points in 11 games. Tom Wilson and the NHLPA are appealing his 20-game suspension.

Notes

The Jets return from Finland and get a week off before they take on Colorado. Patrik Laine had a big game Thursday in his native Finland as he had the hat trick to give him six goals on the season. He potted his first at even strength (the other five were power play goals including two on Thursday) but it was into the empty net so he still hasn’t beaten a goaltender in five-on-five situations. Mark Scheifele was the second star of the week with four goals and seven points in four games. Dustin Byfuglien had a -three assist night on Thursday and is up to two goals and 10 points in 11 games. Tyler Myers has not been a force offensively this season with only a goal and an assist in 13 games but he does have 26 penalty minutes.
