The Week Ahead

Take advantage of the schedule

by Michael Finewax
Updated On: October 4, 2018, 4:04 pm ET

This is the lull before the heavy part of the schedule as two teams play only once while four others play twice.

Poolies in weekly transaction pools can gain a big advantage playing the schedule this week as Chicago, Colorado, Nashville and St. Louis play four games while Edmonton, Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay and Winnipeg play twice and Anaheim and Toronto have only one game this week.

Be smart with your roster, especially this week!

Now to The Week Ahead.

WEEK OF DECEMBER 7-13

4 Games – Chicago, Colorado, Nashville, St. Louis

3 Games – Arizona, Boston, Buffalo, Calgary, Carolina, Columbus, Dallas, Detroit, Florida, Los Angeles, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York Islanders, New York Rangers, Ottawa, Philadelphia, San Jose, Vancouver, Washington

2 Games - Edmonton, Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay, Winnipeg

1 Game - Anaheim, Toronto

.

St. Louis plays all four games at home

Calgary and Chicago play three games at home.

Carolina, Los Angeles, Minnesota, the New York Rangers and Ottawa play three games on the road.

INJURIES

Travis Zajac is out with an upper body injury. (Click here to see the rest of the injury list.)

Note: A tired team is one that has played the day or night before and is going against a team that did not play the previous day or night. The reverse is true for a rested team.

ANAHEIM

Games this week

vs. Carolina

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

Frederik Andersen has been out of action for five games with the flu and the Ducks have been using call up John Gibson between the pipes as Anton Khudobin is still the backup. This has been no surprise as Gibson is their goalie of the future and the only reason Khudobin is on the Ducks is that they wanted Gibson to play a lot this season after two injury-riddled years. Do not be surprised to see Gibson being sent back to the AHL upon the return of Andersen as he needs the playing time. Nate Thompson saw his first action of the season on Wednesday after undergoing off-season shoulder surgery. He is a valuable fourth liner in real hockey but has little, if any, fantasy value.

ARIZONA

Games this week

@ St. Louis, vs. Minnesota, vs. Carolina

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Coyotes finish a five game road trip before returning home to face Minnesota Friday.  I think it’s time that the NHL stops allowing fan voting for the All-Star game. Last season it was Zemgus Girgensons of the Sabres (and Latvia), before that Rory Fitzpatrick of the Canucks in 2006, and this year John Scott is leading the voting after the Friday day. That’s a joke.  Mike Smith has 10 wins in 19 games this season after winning only 14 in 62 games last season. There is not a significant change in his GAA or save percentage over last season either as he is only slightly better this season (2.89/3.16 and .908/.904). Steve Downie is getting close to returning from an upper body injury. He has been out over three weeks and will help your penalty minute total once he returns.

BOSTON

Games this week

vs. Nashville, @ Montreal, vs. Florida

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

I’ve been impressed thus far with the offense of Zdeno Chara. Many predicted that he was done and would get less than 25 points this season but in his first 21 games he already has four goals and 12 points. He only had 20 points in 63 games last season and has as many power play points in 2015-16 (five) as he did last season. The Bruins have the best power play in the NHL so far as they have been scoring at a 31.6 percent clip. Frank Vatrano has been seeing time on the first line with Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand. He has two goals in nine NHL games after scoring 10 in 10 AHL contests.

BUFFALO

Games this week

@ Vancouver, @ Calgary vs. Los Angeles

Rested Team: vs. Los Angeles (Saturday)

Tired Team: @ Vancouver (Monday)

Notes

The Sabres still do not have a timetable on the return of Robin Lehner. The netminder was hurt in the first game of the season as he injured his ankle. The recovery time was six-ten weeks but he is already at week eight and there is no sign of his return. It looks like Chad Johnson and Linus Ullmark will continue to play until further notice. Tyler Ennis (upper body) and Mark Pysyk (lower body) are now week-to-week after sustaining their injuries two weeks ago. Ennis had three goals and 10 points in 19 games so he will be missed in many fantasy lineups. Matt Moulson is seeing fourth line duty after not finding the back of the net in his last 13 games.

CALGARY

Games this week

vs. San Jose, vs. Buffalo, vs. New York Rangers

Rested Team: vs. New York Rangers (Saturday)

Tired Team: None

Notes

It looks like the flu was going through the Flames dressing room this past week as Sean Monahan and Johnny Gaudreau both had it but neither missed a game. It sure looks like Karri Ramo is the number one goaltender in Calgary as he has started 14 of the last 15 games for the Flames. He is 7-5-1 during the streak, but is 7-8-1 with a 3.01 GAA and a .898 save percentage. Believe it or not but that is the best of the Flames netminders as Jonas Hiller is next best with a 2-4 mark to go with a 3.85 GAA and a .856 save percentage. The Flames need lots of help defensively. Mark Giordano continues to struggle with five goals and eight points in 25 games. He is also a minus-14.

CAROLINA

Games this week

@ Dallas, @ Anaheim, @ Arizona

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

It was supposed to be a battle, but the Hurricanes netminding situation has been in the capable hands of Cam Ward this season as he is 7-8-3 with a 2.53 GAA and a .898 save percentage. His competition is Eddie Lack and he has been mediocre at best with a 1-5-1 record to go with a 3.54 GAA and a .865 save percentage, both being 46th best in the league. Eric Staal wants to re-sign with the Hurricanes but he is going to have to take a big cut in pay as he is making $9.5 million in this, his last year of a long-term contract. He had only 54 points in 77 games last season and now has 14 in 25 games this year and you don’t pay $9.5 million per year with those offensive numbers from a forward. Elias Lindholm was on a five game scoring streak before it was halted Thursday night.

CHICAGO

Games this week

vs. Nashville, @ Nashville, vs. Winnipeg, vs. Vancouver

Rested Team: vs. Nashville (Tuesday)

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Blackhawks play four games this week including three in four nights. Expect to see Scott Darling play once with Corey Crawford getting the remainder of the starts. Chicago also plays a home-and-home series with Nashville so if there is any rough stuff, look for Ryan Garbutt to add to his penalty minute count. Patrick Kane equaled the Blackhawks record on Thursday for most consecutive games with a point as he tied The Golden Jet, Bobby Hull at 21 straight games. Kane leads the NHL in scoring and he could be tough to catch. He was the NHL’s first star of the month with eight goals and 23 points in 13 games.

COLORADO

Games this week

vs. Minnesota, vs. Pittsburgh, @ Nashville, @ St. Louis

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Avalanche play four games this week but not three in four nights. Semyon Varlamov should play two or three times with Reto Berra picking up the other starts. Colorado also plays the Wild in the second half of a home-and-home series. Look for Cody McLeod to add to his penalty minute totals. Alex Tanguay returned to action on Thursday after missing 11 games with a knee injury. Matt Duchene had a goal and two assists in his first 11 games but he has been white-hot ever since with 13 goals and 21 points in 15 games. Reto Berra has seen action in only two of the Avs last six games but has given up only two goals on 41 shots. Semyon Varlamov has regained the net after returning from a groin injury.

COLUMBUS

Games this week

vs. Los Angeles, @ Winnipeg, vs. New York Islanders

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

Boone Jenner is on a four game pointless streak. He has 11 goals and 16 points and has been one of the better performers for the Blue Jackets who are deadlocked in last place overall in the NHL standings with 20 points. Sergei Bobrovsky has a 10-12 record with a 2.74 GAA and a .908 save percentage and is re-establishing himself as a top goalie. He has given up more than two goals only once in his last nine games and despite losing his last two games, he has only given up two goals in each contest. Nick Foligno finally scored again on Tuesday and now has two goals this season in 26 games after scoring 31 last year.

DALLAS

Games this week

vs. Carolina, vs. Philadelphia, @ St. Louis

Rested Team: vs. Philadelphia (Friday)

Tired Team: @ St. Louis (Saturday)

Notes

Valeri Nichushkin is heating up with four points in his last three games to give him nine in 24 games this season. The 20-year-old missed most of last season with hip and groin injuries and is now worth looking at in keeper leagues. Kari Lehtonen was activated off the injured list and that allowed the Stars to send Jack Campbell back to the minors. Campbell got in some good work with goalie coach Jeff Reese and hopefully the former first round pick can turn his career around for the good, in the minors. Jamie Benn is having a spectacular season with 18 goals and 35 point to go with a plus-10 rating, 24 penalty minutes and 10 power play points including eight goals.

DETROIT

Games this week

@ Washington, vs. Montreal, @ New Jersey

Rested Team: vs. Montreal (Thursday)

Tired Team: @ New Jersey (Friday)

Notes

The Red Wings play three games in four nights so look for Jimmy Howard and Petr Mrazek to play once each and coach Jeff Blashill figuring out who plays the third game. Howard has won four straight including a 26 save effort Thursday in a 5-1 win over the Coyotes. Teemu Pulkkinen will be out six-eight weeks after suffering a dislocated shoulder on Thursday. Drew Miller will miss six weeks and undergo surgery to fix a broken jaw suffered when hit by Klas Dahlbeck of the Coyotes Thursday. Brad Richards returned and was on a line with Pavel Datsyuk but he had trouble getting untracked and was shuffled to the fourth line. Gustav Nyquist has nine goals and 17 points including five points in his last four games.

EDMONTON

 Games this week

vs. San Jose, vs. New York Rangers

Rested Team: vs. San Jose (Wednesday)

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Oilers continue their five game home stand but play only twice this week so consider benching your Oilers (with the exception of Taylor Hall and Leon Draisaitl) in weekly transaction pools. Anders Nilsson looks to be the number one netminder, at least at this time as he has started the last three games. He is 6-7-1 with a 2.63 GAA and a .915 save percentage, far superior to Cam Talbot who is 3-8-1 with a 3.16 GAA and a .889 save percentage. Connor McDavid is healing a lot faster than most had hoped for from his broken clavicle but the Oilers could be a little more cautious with their wunderkid after seeing Dallas quarterback Tony Romo re-injure his collarbone after returning to action eight weeks after the original break.

FLORIDA

Games this week

vs. Ottawa, vs. Washington, @ Boston

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Panthers have won four in a row as they get into contention for a playoff spot. They are currently in 10th place in the East but only four points out of fourth. Jonathan Huberdeau scored his second of the season Thursday but fortunately for poolies he does have 12 assists in 25 games. Nick Bjugstad is out with an upper body injury but could return this week. The injury allowed Vincent Trocheck to return to a top-six role. Roberto Luongo continues to sparkle for the Panthers as he is 10-8-3 with a 2.24 GAA and a .928 save percentage. The move back to the Panthers seems to have done wonders for his career as he struggled a lot in Vancouver.

LOS ANGELES

Games this week

@ Columbus, @ Pittsburgh, @ Buffalo

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: @ Buffalo (Saturday)

Notes

After missing the playoffs last year, the Kings are off to a good start in 2015-16 as they are first in the Pacific and third overall in the West. This is despite the fact that they are getting very little secondary scoring from their bottom-six forwards as only Tyler Toffoli (11), Jeff Carter (10), Anze Kopitar (8), Milan Lucic (7) and Marian Gaborik (5) have more than two goals for the Kings this season. That’s pretty sad as the Kings have played almost 30 percent of their schedule. Even Gaborik has been a disappointment with only eight points in 24 games. Andy Andreoff leads the Kings in penalty minutes with 39.

MINNESOTA

Games this week

@ Colorado, @ Arizona, @ San Jose

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: @ San Jose (Saturday)

Notes

The Wild play the back end of a home-and-home series with Colorado so if there are any fisticuffs, expect to see Ryan Carter add to his minute totals. A shutout against Toronto moved Devan Dubnyk’s stats to 13-7-2 with a 2.36 GAA and a .916 save percentage, more than adequate for an NHL netminder but not even close to last season’s outstanding effort that got him consideration for the Vezina Trophy. He was iffy to play on Thursday as his wife is scheduled to give birth any day now so he could miss a game this week if she is late. Jason Pominville finally got off the schneid as far as goals are concerned and now has two in his last four games. He managed 30 just two years ago so his deuce in 24 games seem rather pedestrian.

MONTREAL

Games this week

vs. Boston, @ Detroit, vs. Ottawa

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: @ Detroit (Thursday)

Notes

The Canadiens play three games in four nights. They recalled Zachary Fucale from the minors but it may be to give Dustin Tokarski some playing time in the AHL. Nevertheless, expect to see Mike Condon play twice and I think Fucale will get his first NHL start.  Carey Price will be out at least six weeks with a lower body injury and that could put a huge damper on his poolies winning as Price was likely a high first round pick. P.K. Subban has only one goal but does have 20 assists in 27 games thus far with a plus-11 rating so his fantasy value is still high. Tomas Fleischmann is seeing top-six minutes and his seven goals and 15 points in 27 games make him a worthwhile pick up in most leagues.

 NASHVILLE

Games this week

@ Boston, @ Chicago, vs. Chicago, vs. Colorado

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: @ Chicago (Tuesday)

Notes

The Predators play four games this week including three times in four nights. Carter Hutton should get one start with Pekka Rinne getting the other three. Rinne has been struggling of late as he is 1-4-1 in his last six games, giving up 17 goals on only 120 shots.  The Predators have allowed less than 20 shots in four of the six games so Rinne’s struggles are real. Nashville and Chicago face each other in a home-and-home series so look for Barret Jackman to get some penalty minutes if there are any fights. Roman Josi is off to another good start with five goals and 16 points in 25 games. Mike Fisher is on the injured reserve list with a lower body injury that appears to be his right leg.

NEW JERSEY

Games this week

@ Toronto, vs. Detroit, @ New York Islanders

Rested Team: vs. Detroit (Friday), @ New York Islanders (Sunday)

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Devils are the rested team twice this week and that should help. Mike Cammalleri is having a terrific year with nine goals and 26 points in only 25 games. He has not had more than 50 points since his 82 point effort in 2008-09, so if he can remain healthy this season (and he has not played in more than 68 games since that season) he will smash that mark. Tuomo Ruutu could return to practice shortly as he has been out of action with a foot fracture since October 16. Adam Henrique leads the Devils with 12 goals and is second to Cammalleri in points with 20.

NEW YORK ISLANDERS

Games this week

@ Philadelphia, @ Columbus, vs. New Jersey

Rested Team: vs. New Jersey (Sunday)

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Travis Hamonic trade talks continue to be the big news with the Islanders and Hamonic may need to stay if no reasonable deal is found that would send him close to his home province of Manitoba. Hamonic is a top-two defenseman and possible trade partners are having trouble parting with equal value for the young defenseman. Ryan Strome had two goals and four points in three games since his recall from the minors before he was held off the scoresheet Thursday. He is worth picking up in deeper pools. Thomas Greiss has been a valuable pickup this season as he is 7-3-2 with a 2.30 GAA and a .925 save percentage, allowing the Islanders to rest Jaroslav Halak without worry.

NEW YORK RANGERS

Games this week

@ Vancouver, @ Edmonton, @ Calgary

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: @ Calgary (Saturday)

Notes

The Rangers are in Western Canada all week and play three games in four nights. Henrik Lundqvist should start twice with Antti Raanta picking up one start. Raanta’s peripherals are outstanding despite dropping his last two games as his GAA is 1.48 with a .945 save percentage. Kevin Klein is out of action for two-three weeks with a strained oblique. Mats Zuccarello continues to lead the Rangers in goals and points with 11 and 22 respectively. Keith Yandle has been a bit of a disappointment as he has only one goal in 27 games. His 12 assists make up for it a bit.

OTTAWA

Games this week

@ Florida, @ Tampa Bay, @ Montreal

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

Mika Zibanejad suffered an upper body injury on Tuesday after taking a hit to the head from Radko Gudas of the Flyers, an infraction that cost Gudas a three game suspension. Zibanejad missed Thursday’s game but is skating again and should be back in the lineup shortly. Mike Hoffman is following up on his 27 goal, 48 point season in 2014-15 with a dynamite start to the current campaign as he has 13 goals and 25 points in 21 games with a plus-eight rating. He sees plenty of power play time as well and has four goals and seven points with the man-advantage. Goaltender Andrew Hammond skated on Wednesday for the first time since suffering a concussion on November 15. He is still not close to returning and Craig Anderson will continue to be the undisputed number one goalie in Ottawa.

PHILADELPHIA

Games this week

vs. New York Islanders, @ St. Louis, @ Dallas

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: @ Dallas (Friday)

Notes

The Flyers play three games in four nights so look for Steve Mason to get a couple of starts with Michal Neuvirth picking up the other one. Nick Schultz (upper body) was injured almost a week ago and Brandon Manning got another chance to impress on the blueline. He will not have any fantasy value but being placed on the same unit as Shayne Gostisbehere should allow Gostisbehere to free wheel a little more often. Jakub Voracek hasn’t scored in eight games and has only one goal in 25 contests this season. He has been a major disappointment to his fantasy owners.

PITTSBURGH

Games this week

@ Colorado, vs. Los Angeles

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Penguins only play twice this week so keep Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Phil Kessel and Kris Letang active in weekly transaction pools and sit everyone else if you have better options. Chris Kunitz is back on the top line with Crosby and Pascal Dupuis, the unit that did so well together a couple of seasons ago. Dupuis was injured Tuesday but was back at practice Thursday. The trio will make a fine daily fantasy play if you are looking to pick up a whole line for a good overall price. Kessel has nine goals and 17 points in 24 games and looks to be poised to break out. Marc-Andre Fleury continues to play well with a 12-7-1 record to go with a 2.16 GAA and a .929 save percentage.

ST. LOUIS

Games this week

vs. Arizona, vs. Philadelphia, vs. Dallas, vs. Colorado

Rested Team: vs. Dallas (Saturday)

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Blues play four home games this week including three in four nights so Brian Elliott should get a rare start. Jake Allen has taken over the number one job in net for the Blues and should get the other three starts. The Blues switched up their lines on Wednesday in practice and Alexander Steen should play with David Backes and Troy Brouwer while Paul Stastny should see action with Jori Lehtera and Vladimir Tarasenko. Tarasenko was ill on Wednesday and could miss a game or two. Tarasenko remains the Blues best offensive threat as he has a team leading 14 goals and 24 points in 24 games. Alex Pietrangelo and Kevin Shattenkirk have identical stats as they have two goals, nine assists and are each minus-three. Shattenkirk has played in only 15 games, ten less than Pietrangelo.

SAN JOSE

Games this week

@ Calgary, @ Edmonton, vs. Minnesota

Rested Team: vs. Minnesota (Saturday)

Tired Team: @ Edmonton (Wednesday)

Notes

Logan Couture could be ready to return this week from a fractured fibula. He has been practicing with the team and they could really use his offensive prowess back in the lineup. Couture only played in three games before the injury occurred in practice. Raffi Torres apparently will be welcomed back to the Sharks upon completion of his 41 game suspension which will end on January 12. Martin Jones continues to sparkle in net, leaving Alex Stalock playing one every 10 days. Jones is 12-7 with a 2.23 GAA and a .921 save percentage while Stalock comes in at 2-3 with a 2.88 GAA and a .896 save percentage. Mirco Mueller is back in the minors and that’s good news as the defenseman has to play.

TAMPA BAY

Games this week

vs. Ottawa, vs. Washington

Rested team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Lightning are at home for both matches this week. Tampa Bay welcomed back Jonathan Drouin from an undisclosed injury on Wednesday that forced him to miss almost three weeks. He had a goal and an assist seeing action with Vladislav Namestnikov and Nikita Kucherov. Ondrej Palat is close to returning from a lower body injury that has kept him out of the lineup for the last four weeks. Just when it looks like the Lightning are starting to get healthy, Tyler Johnson suffered an undisclosed injury and missed Wednesday’s game. Once everyone is healthy, look for Johnson, Palat and Kucherov to get back together, while Drouin could play alongside Steven Stamkos.

TORONTO

Games this week

vs. New Jersey

Rested team:  None

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Maple Leafs play on Tuesday and then are off for the remainder of the week. They have not been winning of late and heading into action on Friday are just one point out of last place in the overall standings. Don’t forget that this season the NHL will have a lottery for the top three picks like the NBA does, so it’s possible the bottom dweller in the standings could pick as low as fourth overall. Leo Komarov is having a career year as he has hit the 10 goal mark after 26 games. His previous best was nine. James Reimer returned to action on Thursday and the Maple Leafs sent Jonathan Bernier to the minors on a conditioning stint in order to get him to regain his confidence. Garret Sparks became the first Leafs goalie to toss a shutout in his NHL debut but Sparks returned to reality on Wednesday as he gave up six goals on 35 shots.

VANCOUVER

Games this week

vs. Buffalo, vs. New York Rangers, @ Chicago

Rested Team: vs. Buffalo (Monday)

Tired Team: None

Notes

Brandon Sutter underwent surgery to repair a sports hernia this week and will be out of the Vancouver lineup for the next four-six weeks. Jared McCann could see second line action while Sutter is out so he could be worth a pickup in many leagues. Jake Virtanen has an upper body injury and could be gone for weeks. The Sedin twins are leading the way in scoring for Vancouver as Daniel has 12 goals and 29 points with Henrik three behind in the points race. The big surprise (rather disappointment) has been Radim Vrbata who had a 31 goal and 63 point season playing with the Sedins last season. This year he has been moved off the line and his stats show it as he has six goals and 12 points in 25 games with a minus-15 rating.

WASHINGTON

Games this week

vs. Detroit, @ Florida, @ Tampa Bay

Rested team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

Braden Holtby was the second star for the month of November as he was 9-2 with a 1.99 GAA and a .927 save percentage. He has been outstanding this season and has been a top-five goalie for the second year in a row. Tom Wilson finally scored in his 23rd game of the season and then scored in his next game. He has two goals and five assists in 24 games with 39 penalty minutes, not bad for a very late pick at best. Evgeny Kuznetsov continues to lead the Capitals in points with 26. He came over from Russia after the Sochi Olympics with a lot of hype but it took until late last season (in the playoffs) for him to become comfortable with the North American game and he has excelled this season.

WINNIPEG

Games this week

vs. Columbus, @ Chicago

Rested team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Jets could have a nice problem as Connor Hellebuyck has won his first two starts in goal, stopping 46 of 48 shots. The Jets have Ondrej Pavelec out for at least a month and a struggling Michael Hutchinson so look for the 22-year-old Hellebuyck to get every opportunity to grab the top job. The Mathieu Perreault, Drew Stafford and Mark Scheifele exploded for three goals and seven points in a 6-1 win over Toronto Wednesday. Rumors were abound that the Jets offered Dustin Byfuglien for the Islanders Travis Hamonic but it would not be a smart move for the Islanders as Byfuglien can become a UFA on July 1 if he doesn’t sign a new deal. Jacob Trouba has struggled offensively this season but has a goal and two assists in his last two games to give him two goals and six points in 26 games this season. He is worth picking up from a disgruntled owner if you can.
