The Week Ahead

Week Ahead: Leaning Heaney

by Nick Nelson
Updated On: October 4, 2018, 4:09 pm ET

Entering this season, Marlins prospect Andrew Heaney was widely viewed as a Top 30 prospect in baseball. He backed up that elite status with a spectacular start in the minors, posting a 2.47 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 79-to-15 K/BB ratio in 76 innings between Double-A and Triple-A.

The left-hander was called up recently as part of a big shakeup in the Miami rotation, and he excelled in his first big-league start, holding the Mets to one run on four hits over six innings. He'll follow up the sterling debut with two starts in The Week Ahead.

His first outing will come in Philadelphia against a mediocre Phillies club. The second will be more challenging, as he'll have to deal with the Athletics at home.

I'm not quite ready to label Heaney a "Strong Play," but he's got plenty of upside this week and he's still available in more than 50 percent of Yahoo! leagues.

Let's touch on a few other noteworthy two-start options before serving up your full lists below.

Editor's Note: Rotoworld's partner FanDuel is hosting a one-day $40,000 Fantasy Baseball league for Friday night's MLB games. It's $25 to join and first prize is $6,000. Starts at 7:05pm ET on Friday. Here's the FanDuel link.

* One pitcher who has not struggled at home is Wei-Yin Chen, who is 3-1 with a 3.13 ERA in Baltimore. He gets the White Sox and Rays in Camden, making him a very favorable play.

* Kyle Gibson has rattled off 21 scoreless innings in his last three turns, with two of those coming on the road, so it's hard to bet against him with starts scheduled in Anaheim and Arlington.

* Bartolo Colon is at it again. It appeared that the clock may have finally run out on the 41-year-old when he sat with a 5.84 ERA in mid-May, but in his last six starts he's 5-0 with a 1.66 ERA. He's slated for two turns this week and he's only owned in 35 percent of Yahoo! leagues.

Streamer City

The following pitchers are generally available in over 50 percent of fantasy leagues and have favorable match-ups this week:

American League

Friday, 6/27: Chris Young vs. CLE
Young has allowed three or fewer runs in four of his last five turns, and has seen an uptick in strikeouts as well.

National League

Wednesday, 6/25: Henderson Alvarez @ PHI
Despite a sparkling 2.56 ERA, Alvarez is unowned in more than 60 percent of Yahoo! leagues. Philly's offense is subpar.

Wednesday, 6/25: Chase Anderson vs. CLE
Anderson is 5-1 with a 3.21 ERA, and he shut down the Braves in his last start at home.

Thursday, 6/26: Vance Worley vs. NYM
After a horrendous run with the Twins that ended with a DFA this spring, Worley is back in the bigs with the Pirates and looking more like his old self.
