Yahoo Golf Talk: WGC-Workday Championship

In most sports, there are team-versus-team matchups to analyze.

That is not the case in a sport like golf. It's every man for himself and the only defense to contend with is the golf course and the weather.

That is why, as gamers, we try to breakdown the course each week and the easiest way to do that is by looking at course history. There is no such history to dive into this week as the TOUR heads to a new venue, The Concession Golf Club, in Bradenton, Florida.

Sometimes we overvalue the impact of specific golf-course characteristics because great golfers can adapt to most conditions. However, diving deep into the split stats can often unearth a few nuggets that help round out the bottom of DFS rosters.

This week I want to look for golfers that enjoy playing on bermudagrass turf and like a tough test. The Concession Golf Club is one of the toughest courses in all of Florida.

Bermudagrass Putting

A return to Florida means a return to bermudagrass.

Golfers that grew up in the Southeast will be very happy to leave poa annua putting surfaces in the rear-view mirror.

These golfers have gained strokes putting most consistently over the last two years when putting on bermuda greens:

Harris English
Webb Simpson
Brendon Todd
Billy Horschel
Kevin Kisner
Matthew Fitzpatrick
Xander Schauffele
Matt Kuchar
Sungjae Im
Brooks Koepka
Lanto Griffin
Daniel Berger
Carlos Ortiz
Shane Lowry
Patrick Reed

Lanto Griffin ($20): The Ponte Vedra Beach resident is very familiar with the bermuda turf. It's what he sees most often when practicing on his off-weeks. His career-best putting week came at the 2019-20 Country Club of Jackson (+7.8 SG Putting) which is another bermudagrass course. More recently, he's gained 4.5 or more strokes putting in four of his last eight measured events. Griffin can really catch fire on the greens and bermuda seems help boost him just a little. Not a bad option for a minimum-salary selection.

Florida Finesse

The Concession Golf Club features a lot of water hazards. It comes into play on more than half of the holes.

That makes it an easy comp to Florida venues like TPC Sawgrass, Bay Hill, and PGA National.

Let's have a look and see which golfers have the best tee-to-green stats on those three courses. This should tell us who may be comfortable navigating a Florida course with water lurking everywhere.

Here are the golfers that gain the most strokes tee-to-green, over the last two years, on the three courses mentioned above:

Sungjae Im
Rory McIlroy
Jason Kokrak
Tommy Fleetwood
Hideki Matsuyama
Gary Woodland
Matthew Fitzpatrick
Sergio Garcia
Matt Kuchar
Scottie Scheffler
Dustin Johnson
Collin Morikawa
Ryan Palmer
Tyrrell Hatton
Bryson DeChambeau

Sungjae Im ($37): The Atlanta resident has played 18 rounds on those courses in the last two years so he's getting a bump due to sample size. However, even if you sort by average tee-to-green gained, he is still solid, ranking 6th in the field over that time span with four of the names above him playing just one event. Some golfers are proned to finding the water but Im appears to rise to the occasion and enjoy the challenge.

Hopefully these stats will give you some names to dive into when it comes to researching your final selections this week over at Yahoo!
