With MLB’s Opening Day still unknown, today's Draft Guide preview features a look at our catcher profiles.
Take a look:
Of all the big offensive performances in last season’s record-setting home run year, Garver’s might have been the most surprising. For fantasy purposes, he didn’t even have the highest ADP among Twins catchers (that honor belonged to Willians Astudillo). However, Garver exploded for a .995 OPS and launched 31 home runs, needing a mere 359 plate appearances to do so. The Statcast data backs the breakout up, too, as Garver boasted a 50% hard-hit rate and 15.5% barrel rate, both marks that ranked in the top four percent of the league. He also posted a flyball rate of 47.3%, which was the eighth-highest in baseball among players with at least 350 plate appearances. Garver probably still won’t play as much as you’d like after the Twins signed Alex Avila, but he’s due at least a moderate uptick in playing time. That will help bolster his counting stats even if he regresses a bit.
