Which Celebrity Should You Bet On in Tahoe?

Like most sporting events, the 31st annual American Century Championship will look different this year. AJ Hawk won’t tackle any fans. Aaron Rodgers won’t be throwing passes to people on boats. But, we will still get to watch the best celebrity golfers compete over three days for a great cause. All prize money will be donated to COVID-19 relief and area non-profits. (Check out the tv listings here)

Some of the biggest names in sports will tee it up at the Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course in Lake Tahoe, Nev. Patrick Mahomes, Stephen Curry, Charles Barkley, and Tony Romo just to name a few. Don’t believe me? Check out the list of participants for yourself. Some are top-notch golfers while others… not so much. Charles Barkley finished 88 out of 90 last year. Tony Romo has won the event the last two years while Mark Mulder won three straight from 2015-17. Mulder was also runner-up to Romo the previous two years.

The scoring for the American Century Championship is a modified Stableford format over 54 holes.

  • Double Eagle: 10 points
  • Hole in one: 8 points
  • Eagle: 6 points
  • Birdie: 3 points
  • Par: 1 point
  • Bogey: 0 points
  • Double bogey or worse: -2 points

Tony Romo won with 71 points each of the last two years. In 2015, Mark Mulder won the event with 82 points.

If you were wondering, yes, you can bet on the American Century Championship. Thank you, William Hill Sports Book.

The Favorite

Not a big surprise, the two-time defending champion, Tony Romo, is the favorite heading into this weekend’s event. Romo is even money (+100) to win for a third straight year. Mark Mulder is currently the only one to win the American Century Championship three consecutive years.

Is Romo a good bet this weekend? Romo beat Mulder by 10 points last year but only by three points in 2018. Romo is a great golfer but his name recognition also lowers the odds. At even money, I’m going to pass on Romo winning.

Best Bets

Mark Mulder has the second shortest odds entering the tournament at 13/5 (+260). I’m riding with the former A’s All-Star pitcher. He was runner-up to Tony Romo the last two years and won the event from 2015-17. I like the value on Mulder. Additionally, Mulder will be paired with Jack Wagner and Derek Lowe on Friday. Wagner and Lowe are both solid golfers. It will keep Mulder focused (or so I think).

I’ll also like Mulder +170 to beat Romo head-to-head (Romo is -190).

Former professional tennis player Mardy Fish is +750 to win the American Century Championship. Fish finished tied for third with Derek Lowe in 2019 after scoring 57 points. He’s not a bad bet considering he finished with 71 points in 2015 and was runner-up to Mulder in 2016 and 2017.

Hall of Fame pitcher John Smoltz is +850 entering the weekend. Smoltz is a superb golfer but finished 12th in 2019, 10th in 2018, and 9th in 2017. I don’t think he can win it all.

Fade Curry

NBA superstar Steph Curry is one of the biggest names in the field this weekend and because of that, his odds are too short. Curry is 12-1 to win the tournament. Curry finished tied for 7th in 2019. Curry’s best performance was in 2017 when he ended up with 60 points and was fourth place.

If you’re looking to make some money on the Warriors guard, bet for him to beat former MLB pitcher Derek Lowe head-to-head. Curry and Lowe are both priced at -110. I’m going to bet on Lowe. Over the past four years, Lowe has only scored less than Curry once. Lowe finished with 57 points last year and was tied for third. Curry had 50 points. Curry outperformed in 2018 but in 2017, Lowe bested Curry, 62-60.

Another prop bet to look at is Curry’s total points. The over/under is 57.5. Curry scored 50 the last two years and 60 in 2017. Back in 2016, Curry finished with 28 points. The under looks like a decent bet here.

Long Shots

The only non-athlete to win the American Century Championship is Jack Wagner. Wagner won in 2006 and 2011. Wagner has 25-1 odds. Last year, the former General Hospital and Melrose Place star finished fifth with 55 points. He was third back in 2016. All I need (see what I did there), is Wagner to channel some of that 2011 magic this weekend for a big pay day.

Fun fact about Jack Wagner, he has played in every American Century Championship.

Patrick Mahomes is making his American Century Championship debut. He’s 400-1. Maybe he’ll take some of his new contract and bet on himself? Probably not the best investment.

Want a really long shot? New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton is 3000-1. A $5 bet would net you $15,000!

Or, you could just hold onto that $5 and not throw it away.
