Yahoo Golf Talk: Farmers Insurance Open

Updated On: January 27, 2021, 1:21 pm ET

Turning our attention to Torrey Pines this week, a full field will line up for a tough test in La Jolla, California.

Golfers will play one round at the North Course and 54 holes at the host track, the South Course at Torrey Pines.

So, for our research purposes, we are going to focus on the South Course. It's a monster layout that stretches out to nearly 7,800 yards. The course forces you to hit lots of drivers and then hit your approach shots into small targets. Once you reach the greens you have to deal with trick poa annua putting surfaces.

Let's look into some stats to see which golfers have the length to keep up this week and find out which golfers should handle their business with the flat stick.

Poa Putting

Putting on poa annua surfaces can be tricky, even for pros.

That seems to be particularly true for West Coast poa in the fall or wintertime. So let's look at strokes gained putting in California events with poa annua greens. That will include Silverado, Pebble Beach, Riviera, and Torrey South.

These golfers have gained the most strokes putting on average when playing courses with poa annua greens (minimum of 10 rounds):

Carlos Ortiz
Wyndham Clark
Aaron Baddeley
Michael Kim
Maverick McNealy
Adam Hadwin
Brandt Snedeker
Peter Malnati
Xander Schauffele
Jimmy Walker
Seung-Yul Noh
Jon Rahm
Cameron Smith
Phil Mickelson
Denny McCarthy

Wyndham Clark ($23): Clark has roots out West so perhaps it's no surprise he handles poa annua so well. Here at Torrey Pines he is 1-for-2 with a T35 in his 2019 debut and an MC last year. The 27-year-old ended his 2020 with top 25s in three of his last four starts. He shook off the rust last week with a T54 at PGA WEST. He's one of the longest hitters on TOUR and also likes putting on poa, not a bad value option if you need to save some salary this week.

Driving Distance

I just talked about Clark's distance being useful at Torrey Pines. The South Course stretches out past 7,700 yards so hitting it a mile certainly helps.

Here are the golfers that have driven it longer than the field average in 85 percent of their rounds over the last year.

Cameron Champ
Sam Burns
Kristoffer Ventura
Rory McIlroy
Luke List
Patrick Rodgers
Brooks Koepka
Tom Lewis
Cameron Davis
Ryan Brehm
Andy Ogletree
Brandon Hagy
Scott Harrington
Jhonattan Vegas
J.B. Holmes
Jason Kokrak
Tony Finau
Wyndham Clark
Will Gordon
Grayson Murray

Cameron Davis ($21): The young Aussie can flat-out mash the ball. He's used that power to go 3-for-3 at the Farmers with improving results upon each return visit (T58-T57-T36). Davis has tossed in a few stinkers (closing 80 at the 2018 Farmers and an opening 76 in 2020). If he can avoid the blowup round this week then he'll likely flirt with his first top 25 here.  This is easily the best his form has even been when leading up to the Farmers. Dvais has two top 10s this season including a third-place finish last week at the AmEx. He's very affordable on Yahoo at just $21 this week, one dollar above the minimum salary.

Hopefully these stats will give you some names to dive into when it comes to researching your final selections this week over at Yahoo!
