Believe it or not, it is still hockey season and we have a terrific nine-game slate on tap tonight. With so many teams fighting for their playoff lives or playoff seeding, we will have meaningful hockey games each and every night until the National Hockey League season ends on Saturday night.
The Calgary Flames, Los Angeles Kings and Detroit Red Wings are the biggest favorites on the board, while the Carolina Hurricanes, Minnesota Wild, New York Rangers, Winnipeg Jets and Los Angeles Kings are all playing on consecutive nights.
Editor's Note: Play one-day fantasy hockey tonight! Rotoworld's partner FanDuel is hosting a $20,000 league for Tuesday's NHL games. It's just $2 to join and first place wins $2,000. Starts tonight at 7:00pm ET. Play Now!
Make sure to check the RotoGrinders NHL Starting Goalies Page to confirm that the goalies listed below are starting prior to game time.
Jimmy Howard, Detroit Red Wings, $8,100 – After a couple of poor performances, Howard bounced back with a solid showing in Detroit’s 3-2 shootout win over the Minnesota Wild on Saturday. The Red Wings need this win tonight and are a huge favorite over Carolina. The Hurricanes are not only an awful road team (11-24-4) but will be playing on back-to-back nights. Detroit is a dynamite team when playing at the Joe Louis Arena this season (21-10-9) and they should dominate this game from puck drop. Howard is your safest bet for a win and your best shot at a shutout this evening.
John Tavares, New York Islanders, $9,300 – Tavares has six points in his last three games and is currently tied with Alexander Ovechkin for second in the NHL scoring race with 80 points. The Philadelphia Flyers’ season is over, while the Islanders are still playing for playoff seeding, and I expect them to be the much better team tonight. Tavares is as safe as they come in your cash games tonight.
Riley Sheahan, Detroit Red Wings, $4,000 – With the injury to Justin Abdelkader, Riley Sheahan has been promoted to the Red Wings’ number one powerplay unit and will center the second line alongside Gustav Nyquist and Tomas Tatar. The Carolina Hurricanes just lost to the Buffalo Sabres last night. Yes, the Buffalo Sabres. This game is all Detroit. Sheahan gets a nice fantasy boost tonight, and at $4,000 he has tremendous value.
Jiri Hudler, Calgary Flames, $6,300 – Hudler has been one of the hottest players in the NHL since the beginning of March, generating 10 goals and 24 points in his last 17 games. The Arizona Coyotes may just be the worst defensive team in hockey right now and they have never been a team that travels well. Calgary is fighting for their playoff lives tonight and I think they come out guns a blazing. The Calgary Flames’ top line (Johnny Gaudreau, Sean Monahan and Jiri Hudler) will be a very popular play tonigh,t and for good reason.
T.J. Oshie, St. Louis Blues, $6,300 – St. Louis will again be without their two best scorers tonight in Alexander Steen and Vladimir Tarasenko. This means that the Blues’ new number one line of Jaden Schwartz, Paul Stasnty and T.J. Oshie will stay intact again tonight. This line has shown great chemistry together and they are in play again tonight against a Winnipeg Jets team that is playing on consecutive nights. Oshie has multi-point upside in this plus matchup.
Filip Forsberg, Nashville Predators, $5,500 – After being reunited with James Neal and Mike Ribeiro on the Predators’ number one line, Forsberg promptly went out and registered a goal, an assist and four shots on net Saturday night versus the Dallas Stars. The Colorado Avalanche are a team we like to target, as they remain one of the league’s weaker defensive units in terms of possession and shots allowed. Nashville is another team that is still playing for something and I expect them to dominate this hockey game.
Mark Stone, Ottawa Senators, $4,500 – Mark Stone has very quietly established himself as a solid cash game play on a nightly basis. Stone is riding a six-game point streak and has produced three goals, six points and 20 shots on goal in his last four games. The 22-year-old Manitoba native now has 33 points in his last 33 games and he is easily the best bang for your buck on the wing tonight.
Dennis Wideman, Calgary Flames, $5,900 – This is a no brainer. Wideman and the Flames are not only playing great hockey, but they are also in a must win situation, and the Coyotes are just plain awful. Wideman has two goals and five points in his last three games and he should enjoy some success at the very least against Arizona’s terrible penalty kill. Wideman has multi-point upside on the powerplay alone tonight and is my top defenseman overall.
Nick Leddy, New York Islanders, $4,500 – Leddy continues to produce for the Islanders in his new amped up offensive role, with four points in his last three games. The Philadelphia Flyers seem to get outplayed and out-shot on a nightly basis, and if not for the strong play of goalie Steve Mason, they would be considered one of the worst teams in hockey. Look for Leddy to stay hot and do some damage against the Flyers’ 29th-ranked penalty kill tonight.
