Week 12 FanDuel Recap

Updated On: December 3, 2018, 6:02 pm ET

Hopefully all of you had a Happy Thanksgiving holiday and a profitable week on FanDuel along with it! Through all the turkey, stuffing, and mashed potatoes, there was plenty of football to be had. For the second straight week, a lot of popular picks underperformed, so it was a lower scoring week fantasy wise. However, there were still some high-scoring performers out there, making the winning score higher than it was a week ago.

Here's a look at the winning lineup for this week's “Sunday Million” tournament on FanDuel

Russell Wilson

Adrian Peterson

Chris Ivory

Doug Baldwin

Sammy Watkins

Odell Beckham, Jr.

Jordan Reed

Blair Walsh

Minnesota Vikings

This was a fantastically constructed roster by winner “bigneo” in Week 12. He got things started in the 1:00 PM games with big performances from Adrian Peterson, Sammy Watkins, and Odell Beckham, Jr. All three of these players topped 24 fantasy points, and they combined for five touchdowns on the day. Watkins could have had an even bigger day, but he was held in check in the second half. Beckham had a ridiculous touchdown catch and remains a top-shelf fantasy wide receiver.

The winner smartly paired Peterson with the Vikings Defense, as teams often times are able to establish the run when they get a lead and the defense is playing well. In other words, this is known as a high correlation play. It worked out well, as the Vikings Defense put up a respectable point total on the day. bigneo also used Blair Walsh, which is probably a little too much Vikings exposure for me, but it's not a deal breaker. Throw in 14 points from Jordan Reed and 17 points from Chris Ivory, both of whom were in nice matchups and taken at low ownership percentages this week, and this squad was off to a roaring start. The choice of those two players in a tournament format was a very shrewd move.

Going into the 4:00 PM games, bigneo was in a great spot, but he needed good performances from Russell Wilson and Doug Baldwin in order to have a shot at winning the tournament... and boy did they deliver. Wilson threw for 345 yards and a career-best five touchdowns against the Steelers, and Baldwin was a primary beneficiary of much of the fun. He caught six passes for 145 yards on the day while hauling in three of Wilson's five touchdowns. It was a massive 70 fantasy point performance for the duo, and it rocketed bigneo to the top of the standings. Congratulations go out to him for this awesome roster and a big payday of $200,000!

STLCardinals84: Week 12 Recap

I tossed 46 entries into the Sunday Million this week, and I decided to take a different approach than normal. Instead of just breaking down one roster here, I will delve into my overall roster construction thoughts this week. Obviously, there were going to be quite a few popular plays this week because of some good matchups out there. In a large field tournament, sometimes it pays to go against those popular picks. Let's start with the players that I avoided.

For the most part, I avoided the Arizona Cardinals passing game. I had just two teams with Carson Palmer, and three of them included Larry Fitzgerald. This was obviously much lower than their ownership in general. The fade paid off here, as Palmer had no touchdown passes (though he did run one in), while Fitzgerald had a relatively quiet day, too. I also completely avoided DeAndre Hopkins and Brian Hoyer, as they were both very highly owned in a cushy matchup against the Saints. This paid off handsomely, as Hopkins had just five catches for 36 yards, while Hoyer wasn't needed much in the second half of this game and barely topped 200 yards to go with two touchdowns.

As a result of fading those popular picks, my teams were in a good spot. I rotated a core of four running backs in my lineups, with a few popular picks like Thomas Rawls, Javorius Allen, and Charcandrick West. Since I didn't take some of the popular wide receivers, I was able to spend up for Adrian Peterson on quite a few teams, too. All four of these running backs found the end zone, which was definitely positive news. Given the low ownership percentage on the New England offense this week, I also went heavy on Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski. In fact, Gronkowski was on 44 of my 46 squads. Things were looking great when he scored three minutes into the game, but he was relatively quiet after that.

When the week was all said and done, my strategy worked out fairly well. Forty one of my 46 teams finished in the top 50% of the tournament, and 22 of the 46 finished in the top 18% and in the money. Fading DeAndre Hopkins and taking some of the top performing running backs of the week were the keys to success. It was one of my better weeks of the season, and hopefully that will continue into Week 13 and beyond!
