When looking at “bargains” on FanDuel, we'll typically focus on hitters who are $3,200 or lower. In general, we'll only highlight players at the top end of that scale if they have star potential.
We are concentrating on the main slate today starting at 7:05 ET. There are 12 matchups within this timeframe, meaning I will rank the top ten value plays by priority to your lineups.
Please note, these player picks were organized early in the day. For MLB contests, always check lineups and weather closer to game time. Rain, wind, or unexpected managerial decisions could open up additional sources of value. Be sure to keep an eye on the MLB Headlines and Injuries desk. You can double check that your players are in the starting lineup by viewing our MLB Lineups page later in the day.
Now onto the bargain plays.
1 - Jacoby Ellsbury – OF – New York Yankees (FanDuel Price: $3,100)
This is a two-for-one selection, as Brett Gardner ($3,300) is another elite value selection. The Yankees check in as one of the highest projected scoring teams, taking on the struggling-likes of Shelby Miller in hitter-friendly Chase Field. Miller has allowed 21 earned runs in 25 innings at home this season, and the Yanks certainly have enough firepower to accelerate his downward spiral. Ellsbury, Garnder, Teixeira, and McCann show promise as an economical, high-upside stack.
2 - Jason Heyward – OF – Chicago Cubs (FanDuel Price: $3,400)
Heyward was highly regarded in yesterday’s MLB Bargain article, and he (barely) paid it off with a solo homerun in the 9th inning with two outs. That increases Heyward’s hitting streak to eight games, and he has another enticing matchup against Jimmy Nelson’s .360 wOBA and 18.2% HR/FB split against left-handed hitters. The park shift in Milwaukee will help his cause as well.
3 - Brian McCann – C – New York Yankees (FanDuel Price: $3,200)
I already mentioned Shelby Miller’s recent struggles, and how the Yankees could take advantage tonight. McCann is an excellent selection within that, as the catcher position doesn’t have many other inspiring plays tonight.
4 - Mark Teixeira – 1B – New York Yankees (FanDuel Price: $2,800)
Keeping with the Yankee theme, Mark Teixeira has some upside as well. His price is lower than it should be, as Tex went on a cold-streak while playing through a minor injury. However, he produced a three-hit game earlier this series, inspiring confidence to take advantage of this juicy matchup.
5 - Matt Holliday – OF – St. Louis (FanDuel Price: $2,600)
Holliday has been a “boom or bust” player this season, but this could be one of his breakout campaigns. Colorado southpaw Chris Rusin holds an inflated .364 wOBA 19.2% HR/FB split against right-handed hitters, which is something Holliday could easily use in his favor.
6 - Yan Gomes – C – Cleveland (FanDuel Price: $2,700)
I’m not sold on Cincinnati pitcher Brandon Finnegan, especially when he’s starting in hitter-friendly Great American Ball Park. As we all know, Yan Gomes feasts on left-handed pitching, and Finnegan can be regarded as a mediocre one for all intents and purposes. Gomes is riding a nice hotstreak that is aligned to continue. Don’t forget about Marlon Byrd ($2,600) as another Cleveland bargain selection.
7 - Howie Kendrick – 2B – LA Dodgers (FanDuel Price: $2,400)
Angels’ pitcher Nick Tropeano has exceeded expectations so far this season, but he’s not a lock-down pitcher by any stretch of the imagination. Kendrick is one of the more confident “punt” options at second base, if you need salary cap relief. The Dodger second baseman has racked up seven hits in the past four games, and he could keep the heater alive tonight.
8 - Nick Tropeano – SP – LA Angels (FanDuel Price: $6,400)
As I mentioned in the previous write-up, Tropeano has been surprisingly good this season. Granted, this selection comes with some risk, as the Dodgers are far from a slouch offense, especially against right-handed pitching. I’m still thinking Tropeano is one of the more feasible bargain pitchers for tournaments, racking up six or more strikeouts in three of the past four games.
9 - Didi Gregorius – SS – New York Yankees (FanDuel Price: $2,300)
Okay…I wasn’t quite done with the Yankee recommendations. If you need some savings at shortstop, Gregorius is well-aligned to inflict some damage on Shelby Miller. Don’t let his lineup spot turn you away, as Didi has flexed some upside lately with multiple hits and RBI in four of the past ten games.
10 - Eugenio Suarez – 3B – Cincinnati (FanDuel Price: $2,800)
I’m guessing Suarez will be an underrated pick tonight due to a lack of name recognition and more exciting expensive third baseman above him. However, if you need some salary cap relief, feel free to utilize him. Suarez has racked up six hits in the past three games, including two homers and five RBI. He’s facing Cleveland rookie Mike Clevinger (making his MLB debut) in hitter-friendly Great American Ball Park.
