Welcome to Pickup of the Day, where every weekday we'll pick an under-the-radar player whose immediate value is on the rise. The idea here is to identify a starter who can give you some solid innings off the scrap heap, a talented backup who's been given a chance because of a starter's injury, an unheralded regular with a favorable matchup, or a potential breakout player who's starting to put it together. Unlike regular waiver-wire advice, Pickup of the Day is geared more towards interim success, but hopefully we'll have the intuition to help you snag a waiver-wire gem a few times this season.
The Phillies lost starting third baseman Cody Asche to a left hamstring strain on Sunday and are reportedly considering promoting top prospect Maikel Franco from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to replace him. Otherwise the hot corner in Philly will feature a light-hitting platoon of Cesar Hernandez and Reid Brignac. Franco, a 21-year-old from the Dominican Republic, batted .320/.356/.569 with 31 home runs and 103 RBI in 134 games last season between High-A Clearwater and Double-A Reading. He got off to a slow start this year in his first taste of Triple-A, but recent results have been promising. Pick up Franco in mixed fantasy leagues immediately. He has the goods to stick in the majors for good.
