Welcome to Pickup of the Day, where every weekday we'll pick an under-the-radar player whose immediate value is on the rise. The idea here is to identify a starter who can give you some solid innings off the scrap heap, a talented backup who's been given a chance because of a starter's injury, an unheralded regular with a favorable matchup, or a potential breakout player who's starting to put it together. Unlike regular waiver-wire advice, Pickup of the Day is geared more towards interim success, but hopefully we'll have the intuition to help you snag a waiver-wire gem a few times this season.
Is anyone paying attention to the resurgence of former National League Cy Young Award winner R.A. Dickey. Yes, he was a disaster through the first few months of the season, but it has been a completely different story for the past four weeks. He has logged five consecutive quality starts, in that time registering a 2.77 ERA and 0.87 WHIP with three victories (should have been four, thanks Jim Johnson) and 37 strikeouts in 39 innings of work. He's still owned in just 11% of all Yahoo leagues, and can probably be had for peanuts via FAAB as people will look at his 4.44 ERA and 1.39 WHIP on the season and get turned off. When his knuckleball is right, he can be as dominant as anyone in the league, and it has been dancing for a month now. Ride the wave until he cools.
