Dynasty Mock Draft

by Seth Trachtman
Updated On: October 4, 2018, 4:04 pm ET

12 fantasy writers participated in a dynasty mock draft on February 15. The league is 5x5, standard 14 active hitters and nine active pitchers with two bench spots. In dynasty rules, every player drafted is eligible to be kept the following year.

Round 1

1.1 Ben Diamond (The Dynasty Guru) - Mike Trout, OF, LAA

1.2 James Anderson (Rotowire) - Bryce Harper, OF, WSH

1.3 Ryan Boyer (Rotoworld) - Carlos Correa, SS, HOU

1.4 Bret Sayre (Baseball Prospectus) - Manny Machado, 3B, BAL

1.5 D.J. Short (Rotoworld) - Kris Bryant, 3B, CHC

1.6 Nathan Grimm (Rotoworld) - Paul Goldschmidt, 1B, AZ

1.7 Matthew Pouliot (Rotoworld) - Giancarlo Stanton, OF, MIA

1.8 Lawr Michaels (Mastersball) - Josh Donaldson, 3B, TOR

1.9 Matt Foreman (Rotoworld) - Clayton Kershaw, SP, LAD

1.10 Mike Rosenbaum (Rotoworld) - Nolan Arenado, 3B, COL

1.11 Seth Trachtman (Rotoworld) - Andrew McCutchen, OF, PIT

1.12 Drew Silva (Rotoworld) - Anthony Rizzo, 1B, CHC

The question in dynasty leagues continues to be, when Trout will fall out of the top spot? Bryce Harper, Carlos Correa and Manny Machado are certainly up for consideration, but no under-25 hitter can match Trout’s track record. The first round only saw four players who are over the age of 25: Goldschmidt, Stanton, McCutchen and Rizzo.

Round 2

2.13 Drew Silva (Rotoworld) - Jose Altuve, 2B, HOU

2.14 Seth Trachtman (Rotoworld) - Mookie Betts, OF, BOS

2.15 Mike Rosenbaum (Rotoworld) - George Springer, OF, HOU

2.16 Matt Foreman (Rotoworld) - Xander Bogaerts, SS, BOS

2.17 Lawr Michaels (Mastersball) - Jose Abreu, 1B, CHW

2.18 Matthew Pouliot (Rotoworld) - Kyle Schwarber, C, CHC

2.19 Nathan Grimm (Rotoworld) - Miguel Cabrera, 1B, DET

2.20 D.J. Short (Rotoworld) - Corey Seager, SS, LAD

2.21 Bret Sayre (Baseball Prospectus) - A.J. Pollock, OF, AZ

2.22 Ryan Boyer (Rotoworld) - Edwin Encarnacion, DH, TOR

2.23 James Anderson (Rotowire) - Jose Fernandez, SP, MIA

2.24 Ben Diamond (The Dynasty Guru) - Starling Marte, OF, PIT

Miguel Cabrera’s fantasy value seems to have fallen as much as any hitter in dynasty. While still extremely productive, age and injuries have taken their toll on Miggy over the last two seasons in his early 30’s. Shortstops Xander Bogaerts and Corey Seager saw their values skyrocket to the second round. Seager’s value, in particular, shot up and he could be a major short-term risk given that he only has 98 regular season at-bats under his belt. Kyle Schwarber was also the first catcher-eligible player taken ahead of Buster Posey. It remains to be seen if Schwarber will maintain his catcher eligibility after 2016.

Round 3

3.25 Ben Diamond (The Dynasty Guru) - Charlie Blackmon, OF, COL

3.26 James Anderson (Rotowire) - Byron Buxton, OF, MIN

3.27 Ryan Boyer (Rotoworld) - Buster Posey, C, SF

3.28 Bret Sayre (Baseball Prospectus) - Chris Davis, 1B, BAL

3.29 D.J. Short (Rotoworld) - Dee Gordon, 2B, MIA

3.30 Nathan Grimm (Rotoworld) - Jake Arrieta, SP, CHC

3.31 Matthew Pouliot (Rotoworld) - Francisco Lindor, SS, CLE

3.32 Lawr Michaels (Mastersball) - Yoenis Cespedes, OF, NYM

3.33 Matt Foreman (Rotoworld) - Miguel Sano, DH, MIN

3.34 Mike Rosenbaum (Rotoworld) - Noah Syndergaard, SP, NYM

3.35 Seth Trachtman (Rotoworld) - Chris Sale, SP, CHW

3.36 Drew Silva (Rotoworld) - Joey Votto, 1B, CIN

In the long-term, a player’s team can be a consideration in dynasty leagues, as is the case with Charlie Blackmon. Blackmon is talented player in his own right, but he draws much of his value from playing for the Rockies at Coors Field. He’s 29-years-old on a team that’s unlikely to compete this season, so would the Rockies consider moving him soon? Byron Buxton is going in the mid-to-late rounds of redraft leagues, but his status as one of baseball’s best offensive prospects pushed him to Round 3. Of course, speed doesn’t usually age well, which is why Dee Gordon fell all the way to this round. He’s led the NL in stolen bases in consecutive seasons, but is already going on age 28.

Round 4

4.37 Drew Silva (Rotoworld) - Madison Bumgarner, SP, SF

4.38 Seth Trachtman (Rotoworld) - Gregory Polanco, OF, PIT

4.39 Mike Rosenbaum (Rotoworld) - Yasiel Puig, OF, LAD

4.40 Matt Foreman (Rotoworld) - Gerrit Cole, SP, PIT

4.41 Lawr Michaels (Mastersball) - Max Scherzer, SP, WSH

4.42 Matthew Pouliot (Rotoworld) - Jacob DeGrom, SP, NYM

4.43 Nathan Grimm (Rotoworld) - Jose Bautista, OF, TOR

4.44 D.J. Short (Rotoworld) - Carlos Carrasco, SP, CLE

4.45 Bret Sayre (Baseball Prospectus) - Anthony Rendon, 3B, WSH

4.46 Ryan Boyer (Rotoworld) - Todd Frazier, 3B, CHW

4.47 James Anderson (Rotowire) - Yoan Moncada, 2B, BOS

4.48 Ben Diamond (The Dynasty Guru) - David Price, SP, BOS

Oh, what a difference one year makes. Yasiel Puig went in the first round of our dynasty mock draft last season but falls three rounds after an injury-plagued 2015 season. He’s still only 25, so taking him this late could be a steal. Certainly, the pick that stands out in this round is Yoan Moncada, a young Cuban infielder Boston signed last year. There’s major opportunity cost to drafting Moncada this early considering that he’s only played in Low-A. It also remains to be seen what position he will play, but he played 71 games at second base in 2015.

Round 5

5.49 Ben Diamond (The Dynasty Guru) - Zack Greinke, SP, AZ

5.50 James Anderson (Rotowire) - Addison Russell, 2B, CHC

5.51 Ryan Boyer (Rotoworld) - J.D. Martinez, OF, DET

5.52 Bret Sayre (Baseball Prospectus) - Matt Harvey, SP, NYM

5.53 D.J. Short (Rotoworld) - Jorge Soler, OF, CHC

5.54 Nathan Grimm (Rotoworld) - Jason Kipnis, 2B, CLE

5.55 Matthew Pouliot (Rotoworld) - Stephen Strasburg, SP, WSH

5.56 Lawr Michaels (Mastersball) - Kyle Seager, 3B, SEA

5.57 Matt Foreman (Rotoworld) - Lucas Giolito, SP, WSH

5.58 Mike Rosenbaum (Rotoworld) - Christian Yelich, OF, MIA

5.59 Seth Trachtman (Rotoworld) - Maikel Franco, 3B, PHI

5.60 Drew Silva (Rotoworld) - Troy Tulowitzki, SS, TOR

Two young Cubs headline this round, with Addison Russell and Jorge Soler jumping up well beyond their redraft ADP. Russell is attractive as Chicago’s long-term shortstop, and solidified that shift with the team’s signing of Ben Zobrist this offseason. Soler was a disappointment in 2015, but the upside he showed in the minors makes him exciting. Keep in mind this draft took place before the Cubs re-signed Dexter Fowler, which could impact Soler’s playing time in the immediate future. Lucas Giolito will more than likely start the season in the minors for Washington, but he’s arguably the game’s best pitching prospect. With the aces starting to thin out, Foreman took a gamble on long-term value. I was happy to add Maikel Franco in this round, fresh off a rookie season in which he hit .280-14-50 in only 80 games.

Round 6

6.61 Drew Silva (Rotoworld) - Dallas Keuchel, SP, HOU

6.62 Seth Trachtman (Rotoworld) - Jonathan Lucroy, C, MIL

6.63 Mike Rosenbaum (Rotoworld) - Chris Archer, SP, TB

6.64 Matt Foreman (Rotoworld) - Julio Urias, SP, LAD

6.65 Lawr Michaels (Mastersball) - Adrian Gonzalez, 1B, LAD

6.66 Matthew Pouliot (Rotoworld) - Rougned Odor, 2B, TEX

6.67 Nathan Grimm (Rotoworld) - Justin Upton, OF, DET

6.68 D.J. Short (Rotoworld) - Corey Kluber, SP, CLE

6.69 Bret Sayre (Baseball Prospectus) - Lorenzo Cain, OF, KC

6.70 Ryan Boyer (Rotoworld) - Eric Hosmer, 1B, KC

6.71 James Anderson (Rotowire) - Michael Conforto, OF, NYM

6.72 Ben Diamond (The Dynasty Guru) - Brian Dozier, 2B, MIN

Dallas Keuchel is already 28, but he could last a while as a sub-90 mph sinker pitcher who gets by on command and grounders from the left side. Julio Urias is almost barred from helping LA’s rotation this season unless they fall out of contention given the pitching depth they added in the offseason. Still, this is a dynasty league, which means the teenager could help for the next 20 years... really. Rougned Odor looks like an astute youth addition after coming into his own at age 21 late last season. Michael Conforto also looks exciting after hitting 21 homers between three levels, including the majors, last season.

Round 7

7.73 Ben Diamond (The Dynasty Guru) - Freddie Freeman, 1B, ATL

7.74 James Anderson (Rotowire) - Jason Heyward, OF, CHC

7.75 Ryan Boyer (Rotoworld) - Sonny Gray, SP, OAK

7.76 Bret Sayre (Baseball Prospectus) - Robinson Cano, 2B, SEA

7.77 D.J. Short (Rotoworld) - Joc Pederson, OF, LAD

7.78 Nathan Grimm (Rotoworld) - Felix Hernandez, SP, SEA

7.79 Matthew Pouliot (Rotoworld) - Carlos Gonzalez, OF, COL

7.80 Lawr Michaels (Mastersball) - Kolten Wong, 2B, STL

7.81 Matt Foreman (Rotoworld) - Nelson Cruz, OF, SEA

7.82 Mike Rosenbaum (Rotoworld) - Prince Fielder, DH, TEX

7.83 Seth Trachtman (Rotoworld) - Yu Darvish, SP, TEX

7.84 Drew Silva (Rotoworld) - Carlos Gomez, OF, HOU

Freddie Freeman and Jason Heyward are once again back-to-back. The former elite Braves farmhands are both still relatively young, with their hitting primes ahead of them. Joc Pederson’s stock has declined in redraft leagues after a terrible second half, but we need to keep perspective that this 23-year-old hit 26 home runs in the majors last year. How long can Nelson Cruz keep up his power pace? He’s set career highs in homers in consecutive seasons, but will turn 36 in July. It’s an interesting gamble in dynasty. Pitchers returning from Tommy John surgery like Yu Darvish take on more value in this format, if you believe they can remain healthy in the long term.

Round 8

8.85 Drew Silva (Rotoworld) - Salvador Perez, C, KC

8.86 Seth Trachtman (Rotoworld) - Adam Jones, OF, BAL

8.87 Mike Rosenbaum (Rotoworld) - Carlos Rodon, SP, CHW

8.88 Matt Foreman (Rotoworld) - Marcus Stroman, SP, TOR

8.89 Lawr Michaels (Mastersball) - Jung Ho Kang, 3B, PIT

8.90 Matthew Pouliot (Rotoworld) - Matt Carpenter, 3B, STL

8.91 Nathan Grimm (Rotoworld) - Ryan Braun, OF, MIL

8.92 D.J. Short (Rotoworld) - Stephen Piscotty, OF, STL

8.93 Bret Sayre (Baseball Prospectus) - Cole Hamels, SP, TEX

8.94 Ryan Boyer (Rotoworld) - Carlos Martinez, SP, STL

8.95 James Anderson (Rotowire) - Blake Swihart, C, BOS

8.96 Ben Diamond (The Dynasty Guru) - Johnny Cueto, SP, SF

Adam Jones fell all the way to Round 8, an almost shocking plunge for the 30-year-old outfielder. His steals have diminished over the last two seasons, but he’s still a strong power bat at the end of his prime. It remains to be seen if Carlos Rodon is ready to break out after posting a poor 4.6 BB/9 in his rookie season, but he’s worth the gamble if we’re looking at the long term. Stephen Piscotty showed major upside in his rookie debut with the Cardinals, and the team will press on him more this season after losing Jason Heyward. Blake Swihart was touted as an elite catching prospect before last season, when he was forced into the majors after Christian Vazquez’s elbow injury and hit .274.

Round 9

9.97 Ben Diamond (The Dynasty Guru) - Joey Gallo, OF, TEX

9.98 James Anderson (Rotowire) - Mike Moustakas, 3B, KC

9.99 Ryan Boyer (Rotoworld) - Billy Hamilton, OF, CIN

9.100 Bret Sayre (Baseball Prospectus) - Ian Desmond, SS, FA

9.101 D.J. Short (Rotoworld) - Devin Mesoraco, C, CIN

9.102 Nathan Grimm (Rotoworld) - Randal Grichuk, OF, STL

9.103 Matthew Pouliot (Rotoworld) - Brian McCann, C, NYY

9.104 Lawr Michaels (Mastersball) - Matt Kemp, OF, SD

9.105 Matt Foreman (Rotoworld) - Travis d'Arnaud, C, NYM

9.106 Mike Rosenbaum (Rotoworld) - Trea Turner, 2B, WSH

9.107 Seth Trachtman (Rotoworld) - Matt Wieters, C, BAL

9.108 Drew Silva (Rotoworld) - Danny Salazar, SP, CLE

Joey Gallo has legendary power potential with 133 pro home runs through his age 21 season. The question is still whether he can overcome a high strikeout rate to help this year, as it looks like there will be opportunity in Texas. Billy Hamilton looks like a major wild card in what could be a make-or-break season for him as a regular after hitting only .226 last year. Still, he swiped 57 bases in only 114 opportunities last season, and certainly has the ability to produce first round value this year with his speed alone. Trea Turner will battle Stephen Drew for Washington’s shortstop job in spring training, and has the upside of a future leadoff hitter after hitting .322 with 29 steals in the upper minors last year.

Round 10

10.109 Drew Silva (Rotoworld) - Kole Calhoun, OF, LAA

10.110 Seth Trachtman (Rotoworld) - Aroldis Chapman, RP, NYY

10.111 Mike Rosenbaum (Rotoworld) - Nomar Mazara, OF, TEX

10.112 Matt Foreman (Rotoworld) - J.T. Realmuto, C, MIA

10.113 Lawr Michaels (Mastersball) - Adam Wainwright, SP, STL

10.114 Matthew Pouliot (Rotoworld) - Kenley Jansen, RP, LAD

10.115 Nathan Grimm (Rotoworld) - Adam Eaton, OF, CHW

10.116 D.J. Short (Rotoworld) - Wade Davis, RP, KC

10.117 Bret Sayre (Baseball Prospectus) - Craig Kimbrel, RP, BOS

10.118 Ryan Boyer (Rotoworld) - Hunter Pence, OF, SF

10.119 James Anderson (Rotowire) – A.J. Reed, 1B, HOU

10.120 Ben Diamond (The Dynasty Guru) - Brandon Crawford, SS, SF

The first closer of the draft went in Round 10, which highlights the incredible volatility of saves. Take a look at rankings or ADP from a few years ago, and you’re bound to see immense attrition among closers. Nomar Mazara is an unknown for many fantasy owners, but his window is opening quicker with the news of Josh Hamilton’s knee issue. He hit .296-14-69 in his age 20 season, mostly at Double-A. A.J. Reed is probably baseball’s best first base prospect, and he should get a long look in spring training. He doesn’t have any Triple-A experience, but Reed was 2015’s best minor league hitter with a Ruthian .340-34-127 batting line.

Round 11

Round 12

11.121 Ben Diamond (The Dynasty Guru) - Ken Giles, RP, HOU

11.122 James Anderson (Rotowire) - Steven Matz, SP, NYM

11.123 Ryan Boyer (Rotoworld) - Trevor Rosenthal, RP, STL

11.124 Bret Sayre (Baseball Prospectus) - Javier Baez, SS, CHC

11.125 D.J. Short (Rotoworld) - Garrett Richards, SP, LAA

11.126 Nathan Grimm (Rotoworld) - Yan Gomes, C, CLE

11.127 Matthew Pouliot (Rotoworld) - Hanley Ramirez, OF, BOS

11.128 Lawr Michaels (Mastersball) - Michael Brantley, OF, CLE

11.129 Matt Foreman (Rotoworld) - Jeurys Familia, RP, NYM

11.130 Mike Rosenbaum (Rotoworld) - Luis Severino, SP, NYY

11.131 Seth Trachtman (Rotoworld) - Brandon Belt, 1B, SF

11.132 Drew Silva (Rotoworld) - Evan Longoria, 3B, TB

12.133 Drew Silva (Rotoworld) - Michael Wacha, SP, STL

12.134 Seth Trachtman (Rotoworld) - Lance McCullers Jr., SP, HOU

12.135 Mike Rosenbaum (Rotoworld) - Yasmani Grandal, C, LAD

12.136 Matt Foreman (Rotoworld) - Starlin Castro, SS, NYY

12.137 Lawr Michaels (Mastersball) - Raisel Iglesias, SP, CIN

12.138 Matthew Pouliot (Rotoworld) - Jeff Samardzija, SP, SF

12.139 Nathan Grimm (Rotoworld) - Matt Duffy, 3B, SF

12.140 D.J. Short (Rotoworld) - Marcell  Ozuna, OF, MIA

12.141 Bret Sayre (Baseball Prospectus) - David Peralta, OF, AZ

12.142 Ryan Boyer (Rotoworld) - Ian Kinsler, 2B, DET

12.143 James Anderson (Rotowire) - Alex Reyes, SP, STL

12.144 Ben Diamond (The Dynasty Guru) - Russell Martin, C, TOR

We can usually overlook lack of immediate opportunity for long-term potential in dynasty, as is the case with Javier Baez. He enters the season as a likely utilityman for the Cubbies, but looks like one of the best middle infield power prospects baseball has produced in a while. Likewise, the impact of early-season injuries is diminished, as is the case with Michael Brantley. He’s likely to miss at least April after shoulder surgery. Second half aces Luis Severino, Lance McCullers and Raisel Iglesias add big upside at this point in the draft. They are considered sleepers by many owners in redraft leagues, and have the bonus of big long-term upside. Alex Reyes was one pick that caused a stir at the draft given that he will miss the first 50 games of the year due to a suspension, and that likely pushes his timetable to September, at best. Still, the risk was worthwhile for Anderson, who clearly took a long-term strategy at the draft and must be enticed by a pitcher who produced a 13.4 K/9 last season.

Round 13

Round 14

13.145 Ben Diamond (The Dynasty Guru) - Nick Williams, OF, PHI

13.146 James Anderson (Rotowire) - Tim Anderson, SS, CHW

13.147 Ryan Boyer (Rotoworld) - Jon Lester, SP, CHC

13.148 Bret Sayre (Baseball Prospectus) - Shin-Soo Choo, OF, TEX

13.149 D.J. Short (Rotoworld) - Taijuan Walker, SP, SEA

13.150 Nathan Grimm (Rotoworld) - Jake Odorizzi, SP, TB

13.151 Matthew Pouliot (Rotoworld) - Dustin Pedroia, 2B, BOS

13.152 Lawr Michaels (Mastersball) - Jacoby Ellsbury, OF, NYY

13.153 Matt Foreman (Rotoworld) - Adrian Beltre, 3B, TEX

13.154 Mike Rosenbaum (Rotoworld) - Zach Britton, RP, BAL

13.155 Seth Trachtman (Rotoworld) - Billy Burns, OF, OAK

13.156 Drew Silva (Rotoworld) - Carlos Santana, 1B, CLE

14.157 Drew Silva (Rotoworld) - Masahiro Tanaka, SP, NYY

14.158 Seth Trachtman (Rotoworld) - Ketel Marte, SS, SEA

14.159 Mike Rosenbaum (Rotoworld) - Ben Zobrist, 2B, CHC

14.160 Matt Foreman (Rotoworld) - Shelby Miller, SP, AZ

14.161 Lawr Michaels (Mastersball) - Jose Quintana, SP, CHW

14.162 Matthew Pouliot (Rotoworld) - Mark Melancon, RP, PIT

14.163 Nathan Grimm (Rotoworld) - Brad Miller, SS, TB

14.164 D.J. Short (Rotoworld) - Jonathan Schoop, 2B, BAL

14.165 Bret Sayre (Baseball Prospectus) - Albert Pujols, 1B, LAA

14.166 Ryan Boyer (Rotoworld) - Corey Dickerson, OF, TB

14.167 James Anderson (Rotowire) - Patrick Corbin, SP, AZ

14.168 Ben Diamond (The Dynasty Guru) - Tyson Ross, SP, SD

Nick Williams starts off the 13th round with a bang. He’s not expected to arrive in the majors until at least midseason, but could be a cornerstone in the Phillies’ lineup. Tim Anderson also shows big upside, perhaps as the next Dee Gordon after hitting .312 with 49 steals at Double-A last season. Poor early career results shouldn’t be enough to completely sour you on a high-upside player, especially one with Taijuan Walker’s pure stuff. Walker had trouble keeping the ball in the park last season, but also had an ace-like K/BB ratio near 4.00. Jonathan Schoop is gaining steam in all drafts this season after hitting 15 home runs in only 86 games last season. His approach at the plate leaves much to be desired, but he also shows elite power for a second baseman. Corey Dickerson’s ceiling outside of Coors Field will be interesting, but his injury concerns from last year are helped with a likely role as Tampa Bay’s DH in 2016. Over the last two seasons spanning 660 at-bats, Dickerson has hit .309-34-107 and he’s just entering his prime.

Round 15

Round 16

15.169 Ben Diamond (The Dynasty Guru) - Brett Gardner, OF, NYY

15.170 James Anderson (Rotowire) - Kevin Pillar, OF, TOR

15.171 Ryan Boyer (Rotoworld) - Tyler Glasnow, SP, PIT

15.172 Bret Sayre (Baseball Prospectus) - Jurickson Profar, 2B, TEX

15.173 D.J. Short (Rotoworld) - Wil Myers, OF, SD

15.174 Nathan Grimm (Rotoworld) - Michael Pineda, SP, NYY

15.175 Matthew Pouliot (Rotoworld) - Justin Verlander, SP, DET

15.176 Lawr Michaels (Mastersball) - Brandon Finnegan, SP, CIN

15.177 Matt Foreman (Rotoworld) - DJ LeMahieu, 2B, COL

15.178 Mike Rosenbaum (Rotoworld) - Jordan Zimmermann, SP, DET

15.179 Seth Trachtman (Rotoworld) - Aaron Nola, SP, PHI

15.180 Drew Silva (Rotoworld) - Devon Travis, 2B, TOR

16.181 Drew Silva (Rotoworld) - Carter Capps, RP, MIA

16.182 Seth Trachtman (Rotoworld) - Cody Allen, RP, CLE

16.183 Mike Rosenbaum (Rotoworld) – J.P. Crawford, SS, PHI

16.184 Matt Foreman (Rotoworld) - Matt Moore, SP, TB

16.185 Lawr Michaels (Mastersball) - Ender Inciarte, OF, ATL

16.186 Matthew Pouliot (Rotoworld) - Yulieski Gourriel, 3B, FA

16.187 Nathan Grimm (Rotoworld) - Drew Smyly, SP, TB

16.188 D.J. Short (Rotoworld) - Mark Trumbo, OF, BAL

16.189 Bret Sayre (Baseball Prospectus) - Derek Norris, C, SD

16.190 Ryan Boyer (Rotoworld) - Hector Rondon, RP, CHC

16.191 James Anderson (Rotowire) - Jose Berrios, SP, MIN

16.192 Ben Diamond (The Dynasty Guru) - Eduardo Rodriguez, SP, BOS

Tyler Glasnow is one of baseball’s elite pitching prospects, and he becomes even more interesting with the opportunity Pittsburgh is leaving for him to help this year by only “shoring up” the backend of their rotation with Jon Niese and Ryan Vogelsong. Jurickson Profar was an elite prospect only a few years ago, but has struggled with shoulder issues over the last two seasons. However, his play at the Arizona Fall League leaves optimism that he’s back. Even without an opportunity in Texas right now, he’s an interesting mid-round play. Some like Brandon Finnegan more than others, but the reality is we really don’t know what Finnegan can be after Kansas City rushed him to the majors almost right after the 2014 draft. Cincinnati gives him a chance to grow into a starting role. Aaron Nola came from that same draft in 2014, and looked great during his major league debut for the Phillies last season. Still, with limited velocity his ceiling seems limited, but he can help for a while. J.P. Crawford is Philadelphia’s clear shortstop of the future, and should have no problem overtaking Freddy Galvis at some point this year. Yulieski Gourriel has seen immense hype after defecting from Cuba, and he should be able to contribute soon after signing. He turns 32 in June. Jose Berrios is a darkhorse for Minnesota’s fifth rotation spot, combining elite command with a 9.5 K/9 in the upper minors last season. Eduardo Rodriguez looked very good in his major league debut for the Red Sox last season, and should have a rotation spot locked up heading into 2016.

19.225 Matt Foreman (Rotoworld) - Denard Span, OF, SF

19.226 Mike Rosenbaum (Rotoworld) - Brad Boxberger, RP, TB

19.227 Seth Trachtman (Rotoworld) - Evan Gattis, DH, HOU

19.228 Drew Silva (Rotoworld) - Shawn Tolleson, RP, TEX

The early 17th round featured a pair of popular pitching sleepers in Joe Ross and Kevin Gausman. Both pitchers have shown flashes early in their careers, so it’s surprising they fell this far. Despite the likelihood that he will miss the first half of the season, Zack Wheeler looks good this late in the draft. He’s entering his age 26 season, with a career 3.50 ERA and 8.5 K/9. The trend of young pitchers returning from Tommy John surgery continued into Round 18 with Alex Cobb. His timetable is similar to Wheeler, and he’s even more accomplished at this point in his career. Orlando Arcia and Dansby Swanson are two of the more highly touted shortstop prospects who could make their debuts this season. Arcia could be up as early as late April after Milwaukee moved Jean Segura to Arizona. Swanson was the first overall draft choice in 2015, and will likely get a cup of coffee later in the year. Blake Snell made headlines last season for his scoreless innings streak, and finished the year with a sub-2.00 ERA. He’s a major candidate for AL Rookie of the Year. Gary Sanchez could get work this year behind Brian McCann in New York after hitting 18 homers last year. David Ortiz created a buzz in the draft room after falling this far in the draft. Owners were likely scared off by 2016 being his final year, but Big Papi is still on a streak of three straight seasons with at least 30 homers and 100 RBI.

Jose Peraza is blocked in Cincinnati by Brandon Phillips, but the team could still give him time with their youth movement. He swiped 36 bases last season, and was the centerpiece of the Todd Frazier trade for the Reds. Vincent Velasquez has big upside as Philadelphia’s possible fifth starter. He’s piled up strikeouts at every level, including the majors last season. Round 21 started the true youth movement with players who have limited chances of contributing in 2016. Those players included Lewis Brinson, Manuel Margot, Brendan Rodgers, Bradley Zimmer, Rafael Devers and Franklin Barreto.

This particular dynasty league has two reserves, and those spots were utilized further over the last three rounds with long-term stashes. Anderson Espinoza, Jorge Alfaro, Andrew Benintendi, Aaron Judge, Jose De Leon, David Dahl and Willson Contreras will have a tough time helping fantasy owners this season. We also saw some high-upside fliers like Kenta Maeda, Rusney Castillo, Max Kepler, Jorge Lopez and Dalton Pompey. The downside is limited this late in the draft, so it’s not a bad time for a lottery ticket.
