Welcome to Pickup of the Day, where every weekday we'll pick an under-the-radar player whose immediate value is on the rise. The idea here is to identify a starter who can give you some solid innings off the scrap heap, a talented backup who's been given a chance because of a starter's injury, an unheralded regular with a favorable matchup, or a potential breakout player who's starting to put it together. Unlike regular waiver-wire advice, Pickup of the Day is geared more towards interim success, but hopefully we'll have the intuition to help you snag a waiver-wire gem a few times this season.
Joaquin Benoit is the obvious pick-up of the day after being named the Phillies’ closer on Monday, but if you have been reading these recommendations, you would have already known last week that the club might go in that direction. We’ll at least stay in Philadelphia with Tuesday's stash, as I think Howie Kendrick can help in most formats. Sure, maybe he’s not the player he once was, but he’s getting regular at-bats out of the No. 2 spot as the Phillies’ regular left fielder and qualifies between first base, second base, third base, and the outfield. He’s not someone you necessarily need to put in your lineup on a daily basis, but the ability to plug-and-play is very useful. And if you need an extra push, he’s hitting an even .400 (10-for-25) to begin the year. Kendrick is available in nearly two-thirds of Yahoo leagues right now.
