Pickup of the Day: 4/11

Welcome to Pickup of the Day, where every weekday we'll pick an under-the-radar player whose immediate value is on the rise. The idea here is to identify a starter who can give you some solid innings off the scrap heap, a talented backup who's been given a chance because of a starter's injury, an unheralded regular with a favorable matchup, or a potential breakout player who's starting to put it together. Unlike regular waiver-wire advice, Pickup of the Day is geared more towards interim success, but hopefully we'll have the intuition to help you snag a waiver-wire gem a few times this season.

If there is a beneficiary to Eugenio Suarez suffering a fractured right thumb on Sunday, it will probably be top Reds prospect Nick Senzel, who opened the season as the everyday second baseman at Triple-A Louisville but moved to third base on Tuesday for the Bats as word came down that Suarez could be sidelined for up to two months. Senzel can be called up this Friday, April 13 with the Reds still keeping control of his contract through 2023. Any earlier would mean he could reach free agency after the 2022 season. You get the idea. Senzel, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 MLB Draft out of the University of Tennessee, boasts a .313/.390/.509 batting line with 21 home runs, 105 RBI, 33 stolen bases, and 123 runs scored in 191 minor league games. Get him stashed, and reap the benefits (possibly) beginning this weekend.
