Welcome to Pickup of the Day, where every weekday we'll pick an under-the-radar player whose immediate value is on the rise. The idea here is to identify a starter who can give you some solid innings off the scrap heap, a talented backup who's been given a chance because of a starter's injury, an unheralded regular with a favorable matchup, or a potential breakout player who's starting to put it together. Unlike regular waiver-wire advice, Pickup of the Day is geared more towards interim success, but hopefully we'll have the intuition to help you snag a waiver-wire gem a few times this season.
When people think of impact additions to their fantasy squad, the focus is usually on up-and-coming players, prospects who are on the rise or young players who get an opportunity and are ready to take their game to the next level. Today, we look at a grizzled veteran who is sitting on the waiver wire in over 80% of Yahoo leagues and could instantly help. Brandon Phillips looks like he's trying to prove at age-35 that he still has something left in the tank and can succeed outside of Cincinnati. He's hitting .294/.368/.382 has scored four runs, driven in two and has already swiped three bases in three attempts. He averaged 11 homers and 18 steals over the past two seasons, so him helping in the power and speed categories is nothing new. Plus he's a second baseman and provides relief at a scarce position. At least while he's running, he should be on the radar in all mixed leagues.
