Welcome to Pickup of the Day, where every weekday we'll pick an under-the-radar player whose immediate value is on the rise. The idea here is to identify a starter who can give you some solid innings off the scrap heap, a talented backup who's been given a chance because of a starter's injury, an unheralded regular with a favorable matchup, or a potential breakout player who's starting to put it together. Unlike regular waiver-wire advice, Pickup of the Day is geared more towards interim success, but hopefully we'll have the intuition to help you snag a waiver-wire gem a few times this season.
Perhaps it's time that we start taking Dansby Swanson seriously. The young shortstop struggled mightily in his first full season with the Braves in 2017, but we have to remember that he played the year at just 23 years old. Now 24, he's off to a terrific start through his first six games. Swanson went 3-for-5 with a double, triple and three RBI in the Braves' victory on Friday and is now slashing .370/.370/.556 with six RBI and a stolen base. Keep in mind, this talented youngster was the top overall selection in the 2015 draft. He's just 12% owned in Yahoo leagues and mans the difficult to fill shortstop position. There's immense upside here if the first six games are any indication that a breakout is on the horizon.
