Pickup of the Day: 5/22

Welcome to Pickup of the Day, where every weekday we'll pick an under-the-radar player whose immediate value is on the rise. The idea here is to identify a starter who can give you some solid innings off the scrap heap, a talented backup who's been given a chance because of a starter's injury, an unheralded regular with a favorable matchup, or a potential breakout player who's starting to put it together. Unlike regular waiver-wire advice, Pickup of the Day is geared more towards interim success, but hopefully we'll have the intuition to help you snag a waiver-wire gem a few times this season.

The Cardinals’ outfield appeared pretty set coming into the year with Marcell Ozuna, Tommy Pham, and Dexter Fowler, but young slugger Tyler O’Neill is making things interesting. Starting in place of the struggling Fowler, O’Neill homered in his third straight game Monday and knocked in four runs in a win over the Royals. The Cardinals can’t possibly sit him as long as he’s hitting like this. There’s some reason for skepticism in that area since there’s some swing and miss in his game, but O’Neill socked 31 homers in 130 games last season at the Triple-A level. He’s shown pretty good patience in the minors and might also surprise by stealing some bases here and there. Pick him up for a short-term power boost in deeper mixed formats, at the very least. Who knows where this could lead.
