Welcome to Pickup of the Day, where every weekday we'll pick an under-the-radar player whose immediate value is on the rise. The idea here is to identify a starter who can give you some solid innings off the scrap heap, a talented backup who's been given a chance because of a starter's injury, an unheralded regular with a favorable matchup, or a potential breakout player who's starting to put it together. Unlike regular waiver-wire advice, Pickup of the Day is geared more towards interim success, but hopefully we'll have the intuition to help you snag a waiver-wire gem a few times this season.
Isn’t it about time for Jorge Bonifacio to get some more love in fantasy leagues? After launching his fifth homer in his last nine games on Sunday, the 23-year-old rookie now owns an .845 OPS through his first 31 games in the majors. By the way, he leads the Royals in OPS. Bonifacio wasn’t projected to play a major role in this outfield at the start of the year, but he has slugged his way into regular playing time. And I don’t expect that to change, especially with the Royals expected to sell off some pieces moving into the trade deadline. I just put down some FAAB to acquire Bonifacio in the Tout Wars Mixed Draft league, so I’m putting my money where my mouth is here. By the way, you can still pick up Bonifacio in 97 percent of Yahoo leagues. Deep leaguers, take note.
