Welcome to Pickup of the Day, where every weekday we'll pick an under-the-radar player whose immediate value is on the rise. The idea here is to identify a starter who can give you some solid innings off the scrap heap, a talented backup who's been given a chance because of a starter's injury, an unheralded regular with a favorable matchup, or a potential breakout player who's starting to put it together. Unlike regular waiver-wire advice, Pickup of the Day is geared more towards interim success, but hopefully we'll have the intuition to help you snag a waiver-wire gem a few times this season.
Blue Jays closer Roberto Osuna was arrested for allegedly assaulting a woman on Tuesday morning in Toronto and subsequently placed on administrative leave by Major League Baseball. He’ll be out at least a week and a suspension could follow under MLB’s domestic violence policy, even if there is no word about a potential conviction until next month -- he has a court date set for June 18. Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said he will mix and match at closer while Osuna is inactive and mentioned Ryan Tepera, John Axford, Tyler Clippard, and Seung Hwan Oh as options for save opportunities. Clippard has the best numbers of those four and is probably the guy to speculate on in fantasy leagues, though they’re all worth grabbing off the waiver wire in deeper formats.
