Welcome to Pickup of the Day, where every weekday we'll pick an under-the-radar player whose immediate value is on the rise. The idea here is to identify a starter who can give you some solid innings off the scrap heap, a talented backup who's been given a chance because of a starter's injury, an unheralded regular with a favorable matchup, or a potential breakout player who's starting to put it together. Unlike regular waiver-wire advice, Pickup of the Day is geared more towards interim success, but hopefully we'll have the intuition to help you snag a waiver-wire gem a few times this season.
One man's injury is another man's opportunity. That's exactly what we have in center field in Tampa Bay. Kevin Kiermaier hit the disabled list with a fractured hip on Friday and looks as if he'll miss at least the next two months of action. That opens the door for speedster Mallex Smith to take over on a regular basis and instantly become and asset in all mixed leagues. He swiped three bases in his first start on Friday and should continue to run wild for the duration of his stay in the lineup. He won't hit for power and may not deliver a plus average, but the stolen bases that he'll provide alone will more than deliver a profit from the minimal investment it will take to acquire him.
