Pickup of the Day: 6/13

Welcome to Pickup of the Day, where every weekday we'll pick an under-the-radar player whose immediate value is on the rise. The idea here is to identify a starter who can give you some solid innings off the scrap heap, a talented backup who's been given a chance because of a starter's injury, an unheralded regular with a favorable matchup, or a potential breakout player who's starting to put it together. Unlike regular waiver-wire advice, Pickup of the Day is geared more towards interim success, but hopefully we'll have the intuition to help you snag a waiver-wire gem a few times this season.

Seth Lugo is currently owned in just 29 percent of Yahoo leagues, which is simply far too low for a guy who has registered a a 1.77 ERA, 0.85 WHIP, and 47/9 K/BB ratio in 45 2/3 innings this season and is currently locked into a rotation spot with the Mets. Lugo allowed just two hits and struck out eight batters over six scoreless innings Sunday night against the Yankees and his next start will come this Saturday at Chase Field against the host Diamondbacks. He’s averaging a career-high 93.8 mph with his fastball and featuring his curveball more, to great success. The 28-year-old right-hander should be owned in most standard fantasy formats.
