Welcome to Pickup of the Day, where every weekday we'll pick an under-the-radar player whose immediate value is on the rise. The idea here is to identify a starter who can give you some solid innings off the scrap heap, a talented backup who's been given a chance because of a starter's injury, an unheralded regular with a favorable matchup, or a potential breakout player who's starting to put it together. Unlike regular waiver-wire advice, Pickup of the Day is geared more towards interim success, but hopefully we'll have the intuition to help you snag a waiver-wire gem a few times this season.
The Royals have used three different relievers already for save chances since they traded Kelvin Herrera, with Timothy Hill and Wily Peralta converting their opportunities and Brandon Maurer blowing his. Peralta received the most recent chance, giving up a hit but striking out two in a scoreless frame against the Angels on Monday. There still isn't much clarity with this situation, as it's possible Kevin McCarthy could also get a shot. However, Peralta seems like the best bet at the moment. A former Opening Day starter with the Brewers, Peralta has always been a hard thrower and is now sitting in the upper 90s consistently as a reliever. He's going to walk his fair share of guys but looks like the best option to close for Kansas City and remains unowned in over 90 percent of Yahoo leagues.
