Welcome to Pickup of the Day, where every weekday we'll pick an under-the-radar player whose immediate value is on the rise. The idea here is to identify a starter who can give you some solid innings off the scrap heap, a talented backup who's been given a chance because of a starter's injury, an unheralded regular with a favorable matchup, or a potential breakout player who's starting to put it together. Unlike regular waiver-wire advice, Pickup of the Day is geared more towards interim success, but hopefully we'll have the intuition to help you snag a waiver-wire gem a few times this season.
With Justin Wilson reportedly on his way to the Cubs, it’s time to speculate on who might take his place in the closer role for Detroit. It’s not an inspiring group, but Shane Greene figures to get the first crack here. The 28-year-old right-hander has recovered from a rough June with 10 2/3 scoreless innings this month. He owns a 2.74 ERA with 50 strikeouts in 46 innings on the year, though he has also issued 25 walks. There could be some bumps in the road, but he’s the name to own in this bullpen in the short-term. Joe Jimenez, who many consider the closer-in-waiting, is a name to watch in the minors.
