Welcome to Pickup of the Day, where every weekday we'll pick an under-the-radar player whose immediate value is on the rise. The idea here is to identify a starter who can give you some solid innings off the scrap heap, a talented backup who's been given a chance because of a starter's injury, an unheralded regular with a favorable matchup, or a potential breakout player who's starting to put it together. Unlike regular waiver-wire advice, Pickup of the Day is geared more towards interim success, but hopefully we'll have the intuition to help you snag a waiver-wire gem a few times this season.
If you need a streaming option early this week, take a look at Astros rookie left-hander Framber Valdez, who gets a cozy matchup against the light-hitting Tigers on Tuesday. The 24-year-old Valdez owns a stingy 1.37 ERA through his first four appearances (three starts) in the majors while allowing one run or fewer in all of them. He’s put up a 10/7 K/BB ratio in 14 1/3 innings during that time, so the peripherals could be better, but his control was pretty good between Double- and Triple-A this year and he showed an ability to miss plenty of bats. Most fantasy owners should be willing to take a chance on him with this matchup.
