PUD 4/11: Nomar Mazara

Welcome to Pickup of the Day, where every weekday we'll pick an under-the-radar player whose immediate value is on the rise. The idea here is to identify a starter who can give you some solid innings off the scrap heap, a talented backup who's been given a chance because of a starter's injury, an unheralded regular with a favorable matchup, or a potential breakout player who's starting to put it together. Unlike regular waiver-wire advice, Pickup of the Day is geared more towards interim success, but hopefully we'll have the intuition to help you snag a waiver-wire gem a few times this season.

Shin-Soo Choo landed on the disabled list Sunday with a right calf strain and is expected to be sidelined for the next 4-6 weeks. Texas could have taken the conservative approach and plugged in Ryan Rua, but instead the team promoted 20-year-old top outfield prospect Nomar Mazara from Triple-A Round Rock on Sunday morning and he went 3-for-4 with a solo home run in his major league debut Sunday afternoon. Mazara is an incredibly polished player for a 20-year-old and he should start regularly for however long Choo is out. Josh Hamilton (knee) is also on his way back too, but it's worth picking up Mazara in most standard fantasy leagues for what should be a nice, productive month-long preview.
