Welcome to Pickup of the Day, where every weekday we'll pick an under-the-radar player whose immediate value is on the rise. The idea here is to identify a starter who can give you some solid innings off the scrap heap, a talented backup who's been given a chance because of a starter's injury, an unheralded regular with a favorable matchup, or a potential breakout player who's starting to put it together. Unlike regular waiver-wire advice, Pickup of the Day is geared more towards interim success, but hopefully we'll have the intuition to help you snag a waiver-wire gem a few times this season.
Scott Baker has been called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City to start for the Dodgers on Sunday afternoon agaisnt the Padres and he could stick around for a while if things go well. Hyun-Jin Ryu is still shut down with a shoulder injury and Brandon McCarthy left his start Saturday night with elbow tightness, so there are vacancies in the Los Angeles rotation. Baker, 33, came within one pitch of a seven-inning perfect game in his last turn at OKC. He's always had good control, he's capable of missing bats and he'll carry good win probability on a loaded Dodgers team. Consider the veteran right-hander a solid fantasy streamer in standard leagues and a potential keeper in shallower formats.
