Welcome to Pickup of the Day, where every weekday we'll pick an under-the-radar player whose immediate value is on the rise. The idea here is to identify a starter who can give you some solid innings off the scrap heap, a talented backup who's been given a chance because of a starter's injury, an unheralded regular with a favorable matchup, or a potential breakout player who's starting to put it together. Unlike regular waiver-wire advice, Pickup of the Day is geared more towards interim success, but hopefully we'll have the intuition to help you snag a waiver-wire gem a few times this season.
Carlos Carrasco is expected to miss 4-6 weeks with a left hamstring strain, which means that Bauer will get an opportunity to get back in the good graces of fantasy owners. While the Indians haven’t made an official announcement on how their rotation will play out this week, Bauer is moving back to the starting rotation for now. The 25-year-old right-hander has struggled to throw strikes in the majors, but he has averaged 8.6 K/9, so there’s some nice strikeout upside. There’s at least value here in mixed leagues as a matchup play. Speaking of matchups, Bauer could get the light-hitting Phillies on Saturday if the Indians decide to use him on regular rest.
