Welcome to Pickup of the Day, where every weekday we'll pick an under-the-radar player whose immediate value is on the rise. The idea here is to identify a starter who can give you some solid innings off the scrap heap, a talented backup who's been given a chance because of a starter's injury, an unheralded regular with a favorable matchup, or a potential breakout player who's starting to put it together. Unlike regular waiver-wire advice, Pickup of the Day is geared more towards interim success, but hopefully we'll have the intuition to help you snag a waiver-wire gem a few times this season.
Alex Colome had an unfortunate run of luck during spring training, as he arrived late due to a visa issue and then went down with pneumonia. The right-hander is healthy now, though, and slated to rejoin the Rays’ rotation on Friday against the Orioles. Colome, 26, boasts a career 2.50 ERA over 39 2/3 innings in the big leagues, although his 25/19 K/BB ratio leaves a lot to be desired. That said, with an 8.5 K/9 rate and 3.5 BB/9 rate during his time at Triple-A, some improvement in those areas is a reasonable expectation. Colome could wind up with some mixed league value and is currently owned in just four percent of Yahoo leagues.
