Welcome to Pickup of the Day, where every weekday we'll pick an under-the-radar player whose immediate value is on the rise. The idea here is to identify a starter who can give you some solid innings off the scrap heap, a talented backup who's been given a chance because of a starter's injury, an unheralded regular with a favorable matchup, or a potential breakout player who's starting to put it together. Unlike regular waiver-wire advice, Pickup of the Day is geared more towards interim success, but hopefully we'll have the intuition to help you snag a waiver-wire gem a few times this season.
Need some power in your lineup? It might be a good idea to stash this guy away. Arcia was optioned to Triple-A Rochester after his recent wrist injury, but he has responded by hitting home runs in four out of his last seven games. Perhaps most encouraging of all, the last three have been against left-handed pitchers. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire told Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press over the weekend that Arcia could return to the majors on the team's upcoming homestead if he keeps hitting, so he's certainly making a compelling case for himself. The Twins are going to have a bit of a logjam if everyone is healthy, but Arcia is a young player with a promising future. He should get pretty regular at-bats if he's with the big club. It might pay off to get ahead on this one in deeper leagues.
