Welcome to Pickup of the Day, where every weekday we'll pick an under-the-radar player whose immediate value is on the rise. The idea here is to identify a starter who can give you some solid innings off the scrap heap, a talented backup who's been given a chance because of a starter's injury, an unheralded regular with a favorable matchup, or a potential breakout player who's starting to put it together. Unlike regular waiver-wire advice, Pickup of the Day is geared more towards interim success, but hopefully we'll have the intuition to help you snag a waiver-wire gem a few times this season.
White Sox second baseman Gordon Beckham has been a yearly disappointment since teasing the fantasy world with his .808 OPS, 14 home runs, and 63 RBI in 103 games as a rookie back in 2009. And maybe we're falling into that same trap again. But he's owned in just nine percent of Yahoo leagues and probably worth a flier with the way he's hitting the ball in the month of May. Beckham has a .313 batting average, .820 OPS, and three home runs in 84 plate appearances since May 2. He's been hitting either second or first in Chicago's lineup -- up from the eighth spot where he was primarily in April. Take a shot. Maybe it's real this time.
